Ate here a few times at lunch. Quality food, large portions, good service, overlooking the sea and listening to the waves. Enjoyed it so much that we dressed up and went for a meal in the evening and we were not disappointed. recommended.

Usually go here for meal but this year as we were staying a long way out of Alvor it was just a little too far to walk to. This year as one of the days was overcast and cold, we drove to the beach, had a long walk on the beach and popped in here for coffee. Staff as friendly and helpful as always.

We have been popping into the 5 Shells for a pretty long time now. It's always there, toppish of the list, when the question "Well, we've got go to here, there, look at this and that, and d'ya fancy lunch somewhere?"

Similarly when there's a visitor who wants to see a new place, this gaff springs to mind.

First reason, if one has visited before then they recognise one, smile and greet you and generally give the impression of being pleased to see you.

Second Reason, the location is bang on the dunes just behind Alvor Beach, a continuation, bar the interruption of the river, of the sweeping sands from the west that commence at Lagos, and drive inexorably eastwards toward Portimao.

Third reason, the food is nothing extraordinary {bar 1 special mention that follows}, but always fresh, not frozen, well cooked and delivered with aplomb. The mention goes to the Fish Soup. Each and every place, large, small and middlin' has Fish Soup in this part of the world. Some have pasta, some rice, some more 'bisque' like, some more liquid. The stuff here is just Fish, and fish and fish, and a generous portion too, with sufficient stock to remind you this is a soup not a stew. Flavour..............................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....................I leave that to your imagination.

Fourth reason, the staff, happy, efficient, alert, no demand presented to them causes any drama at all.

Fifth reason, if one is a 'twitcher' one can feed the sparrows from the outside tables, with the surplus bread that one hasn't dunked into the soup.

Sixth reason {see, a bonus for you}, should you be on your first visit to the Five Shells you will be greeted as if you had been before, the service and food will be splendid and the sparrows will say "hello" if you wish.

A great location just off the beach. The food was tasty and the service friendly. A little pricey for a beach bar but decent value for money
