I took the ferry one-way from Geiranger to Hellesylt. Geiranger itself is pretty touristy but pleasant enough for a quick snack. While on the ferry I took numerous photos. But none of them do it justice. You just have to go there.

This is a UNESCO world heritage site and deservedly so. It is also reputed to be the prettiest of Norway's fjord's. There are rugged cliffs, waterfalls of varying sizes and shapes and well as the occasional chalet and farm clinging to a rocky outcrop.

The cruise on a small ship through this fjord was a dazzling experience. I would most certainly rate it a full 5 points, however - and INCREDIBLY - the large cruise lines also ply these waters. We escaped the worst of it by literally taking to the hills. I found the visit to the community of Geiranger terribly off- putting. There was a single street crowded with souvenir and coffee shops all hawking precisely the same stuff. The inundation of several thousand tourists from two massive cruise ships was just horrible. Never again.

Taking a cruise in this fjord is a must. Up there with any major natural landmark. If this is not on your bucket list, it should be.

Take one of the rental Renault Twizy e-cars up the fjorden. It's a two seater, and have some great fun while driving eco-friendly and at the same time enjoy the magnificent scenery in the Geiranger Fjord.
