“Great location and imperial views of the fjord”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

We stayed here two nights in June 2012. It is a classic hotel on a mountain overlooking the Geirangerfjord. Founded in 1892, emperor Wilhelm II stayed here several times, undoubtedly because he enjoyed the views. Utsikten is the Norwegian word for The View. Our room was at rear side of the hotel (no view) and was very tiny indeed. The bed was placed against the wall, so you could not step into it from both sides. The bed was extremely comfortable. Bathroom was small too, but clean and functional. No TV in the room and no elevator to the upper floors. The receptionist did get tired telling the guests that there were no elevators back in 1892 - which is not true by the way.
Breakfast was great, good selection of cold and hot items and the view....
Friendly staff. The hotel is open from May through September.

I made an overnight stay at Hotel Utsikten on my motorbike tour in Northern Europe. There is a small parking lot next to the hotel, but there were not enough places for all guests; I was able to find a spot for my motorbike.

The front desk clerk was friendly, and once she noticed that I am a Finn, she started addressing me in Finnish, my native language, which was a pleasant surprise.

My room had a great view to Geirangerfjord. The room itself was disappointing. It was tiny (especially the bathroom was very tight) and furnished in a very basic and old-fashioned way. There was not much space to put my luggage. The radiator was malfunctioning, but with careful adjustment it provided enough heat. Wireless internet was working fine. I felt the room was overpriced for its quality.

I had dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. The dining room was overlooking the fjord. I tasted some whale meat, mackerel, and strawberries with chocolate and ice cream. The food was superb but expensive, and the staff were very polite and attentive. The breakfast buffet served at the same room in the morning was excellent, providing a good selection of warm and cold dishes.

This is an historical hotel in a very touristy town. The advantage is that it is small and therefore not crowded. So, if you want quiet and away from the crowds with a "1920's" hotel experience then this one is for you. For more than two people it is expensive and I think we would have preferred staying in a hytta (mountain cabin) nearby that had a kitchen, living room two bedrooms and a deck on the cliff overlooking the fjord for about half the price. The cool part is that the overlook where we took the accompanying photo is less than 1/4 mile walk away. The dining area is slightly below the road that passes between the hotel and the fjord, but it's still nice as you can see.

The biggest selling point of Villa Utsikten (meaning the view in Norwegian) is the amazing view of the fjord below. Unfortunately, apart from that it’s a very average hotel.

The rooms we had were clean, but basic and small. The included wifi coverage was ok, but signal strength varied in different parts of the room. Strangely, there was no TV in the rooms – the first time I’ve ever seen that in a hotel. There was also no fridge or other amenities apart from an electric wall heater.

Service was quite slow in the lobby bar, with the two staff rushed off their feet serving both the front desk, bar and restaurant.

On the positive side, the buffet breakfast included in the rate was excellent, with a good selection of breads, cold meats, cheese, sausages, eggs and pastries.

As mentioned by others, the location is up a hill from the main Geiranger town, which could be difficult to walk to and from if you don’t have a car, due to the hairpin bends on the mountain and the large tourist busses taking up most of the road.

We booked the Hotel Utstiken for the view of Geirangerfjord and were blessed with beautiful weather to enjoy it. The hotel is located a mile or so up the road from Geiranger, right on Rv63. It was a bit awkward to see the tour buses with cruise ship passengers drive by very close to our second-floor room window, but traffic died down in the afternoon and was not too bothersome in any case.

The view of Geirangerfjord is truly stunning, and we enjoyed sitting on our bed and taking in the view. Unfortunately, the windows could not be opened, so one always had to look through glass down to the fjord. But there was a small common lateral balcony with a few chairs on the second floor which we had to ourselves when taking pictures. The room was very small indeed, with no TV and a tiny bathroom, but it was all we needed. Internet connectivity was good. Parking seemed a bit tight; whenever we returned to the hotel, usually only one parking spot was available, and we wondered where we could have parked if everything was full, for example because of restaurant patrons. Breakfast was very enjoyable, as it offered a large selection of everything and--because of the view!

This is a basic hotel with far from basic prices. The rooms have no wardrobes, drawers or TV and the hotel has no lift. On our first full day we returned to our room after an early start to explore the fjord. At 3.30 p.m. the room had not been cleaned or serviced.

Breakfast was OK. The evening meal was very nice but was very expensive (even by Norwegian standards) and you had no choice.

The staff are pleasant enough and the view was great.

Room Tip: If you want the full facilities then you will have to pay NOK1000 more per night and stay elsewhere...

If you visit Geiranger Fjorden you give yourself the chance to sit in Hotel Utsikten at least one day and just watch the magnificent view of Geiranger Fjorden. It is one of the most stunning views in the world. From the hotel, from you bed you will have this view. Give yourself the chance to experience that. Beside that the hotel itself is wonderful: wooden, nice staff, great food, reasonable prices (even the wine - for Norway). I would say: don't miss it on a trip in that part of Norway.
