Absolutely the best base of operations one could have in the Firenza area. The Valdirose was charming, furnished beautifully, and we felt as if we were home with family. Our thanks to Irene, Paulo, Giovanni, and Graziella for all of their efforts and making us feel so welcome on our first visit to Italy.

What can I say....staying here with another couple this September (2011) was just a super experience. I can only add to what the the earlier posts said about Giovanni, Paolo, Irene and the whole family being delightful, gracious and very accommodating. They are the real deal... The other treat, in addition to Giovanni's infectious smile, was being able to sample real life in the small towns of Lastra a Signa & Signa. We really enjoyed eating in the great local restaurants with the locals (not touristy, great food & better prices than Florence), & visiting the super-COOP (supermaket/dept store ubiquitous in Italia). At the same time it is an easy train ride from Florence or an easy drive from many of the sights of Tuscany. I'd recommend a car rental for at least part of the time...as many of the sights: Siena, hill towns, Pisa, and Cinque Terre are doable day trips from there. We picked up and dropped off a car in Florence. One hint- driving in the small towns - and near the B&B - is not for the faint of heart. Some very tight spaces, narrow roads and hills. And the (very brief) city driving to get/drop off car does require you to be a bit aggressive. But the tight or aggressive spots are only in a few areas, and once on the main roads it is fine...as long as you have a GPS to guide you. And if you don't have a car- no worries- they'll happily drive you to/from train stop (just 5 minutes to station, and under 20 min train ride to Florence for 1.90 Euros) and to/from local restaurants. We were 4 people and did 2 days with car and 2 without....and it worked out great.

B&B itself is delightful, very nicely decorated and in a beautiful spot with great views overlooking Florence. Overall a wonderful B&B experiences that we rank very highly - and we have had many good B&B experiences over the years. Cost is also very fair. Highly recommended...Stay here if you can!

We stayed here with our friends for 5 nights in April 2011. You cannot sum up in a just a few words this beautiful place and the amazing family who owns this B&B. Giovanni and Graziella, Paulo and Irene are the friendliest, helpful and amazing hosts that you will ever meet. The home is beautifully decorated and very, very comfortable to stay in. The food is great and if you ask ahead of time and Graziella is able, she will cook you a beautiful meal for dinner. On the day we arrived Giovanni welcomed us with coffee and home baked cake, we sat on the balcony overlooking Florence. At breakfast if you mention where you are heading off for the day Paulo will get maps out and show you directions. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I felt like I was at a home away from home. To travel to Italy and NOT stay here and meet these lovely people will be an enormous shame. It was my most memorable time here. I LOVE this family and this B&B. posted from Debbie Gannell

My husband and I toured Italy 2 weeks for our honeymoon. We wanted to experience the city, the country, and the coast. To experience the beautiful countryside of Tuscany we stayed at Valdirose, and it was wonderful. We stayed in an upstairs room, next to the terrace. The room was beautiful just as the pictures depic on their website, sunny, and comfortable. The whole house was decorated beautifully, it's very country-chic. We loved it. In the morning, you wake up to the sound of roasters, birds chirping...which is a nice change of pace from the hustle/bustle of a city. Hovwever, Florence is only a 20 minute train ride, and there is a train station in the small town of Lastra Signa.

Giovanni, Paolo, Irene truly made us feel like family. You can tell they love what they do and want you to have a wonderful experience while on your trip. Irene's English is great and Paolo's is very good. Giovanni's english isn't as good but it doesn't matter, he has an infectious smile and makes you feel like you are part of the family. He greeted my husband, Tom, every morning with a huge smile saying "Thomas!" and a handshake.

Each morning we had pastries, toast and jams, and espresso for breakfast. One morning Irene, Paolo, and Giovanni set up a romantic, private breakfast for my husband and I on the terrace, and the view from the terrace is just breathtaking.

Our last evening at Valdirose, my husband and I went to the local grocery store to stock up on some wine, water, cheeses, meats, etc. (btw this is a great way to save money no matter where you are in Italy) Instead of eating out, we were able to eat on the terrace. And we eventually joined Giovanni and Paolo on their patio for a drink of Grappa, enjoyed cigars, and wonderful conversation.

I can't even say enough things about Valdirose and the family. They are wonderful people, the home is beautiful and clean, and it will just make your Tuscan/Florence experience even better.

Valdirose is the best hotel/B&B experience we've ever had. My husband and I have stayed at Four Seasons, Intercontinental, etc. Nothing compares to the genuine sense of hospitality and graciousness that you will experience from Giovanni, Graziella, Paolo, Irene & Beatrice.

The B&B is situated on a hill in a small town overlooking Florence, surrounded by a lovely hedge with trees and flowers. A short walk to two different train stations, each with multiple trains to Florence and environs all day. But honestly, we enjoyed Valdirose more than any of the sightseeing we did while there.

A renovated family home, Valdirose has a beautiful terrace where they serve you coffee and pastries (not for breakfast, just any other time you want them) and you can sit and enjoy the Florence view, a nice breeze, and just knowing that you are staying at a wonderful place.

The sign says "Charming Rooms," and while at first I thought that was maybe a cheesy translation, I quickly learned that "charming" is by far the best way to describe the experience and the rooms. Decorated impeccably with an old world flair (with all of the modern conveniences including A/C, television and a big bathroom with heated towel bar), our room even had little potpourri sachets on the hangars in the wardrobe.

The host family is absolutely lovely. Giovanni, the patriarch, is an affable man of probably 55 or 60, always smiling, always willing to help. He even picked up my brother to and from the train station, walking him to the platform, and my brother wasn't even a guest! His wife Graziella helped out in the kitchen and was always smiling as well. Giovanni's daughter, Irene, speaks great English, as does her husband, Paolo. They have model looks, and their little girl Bea is beautiful. Every request is met with a smile.

And no request is too big to ask of Giovanni's family. In fact, you don't have to ask. They just know what you need and bring it to you. If you only ask for ice for your soda, they seem disappointed and ask is there ANYTHING else? And then they seem pleased when you say, sure, I'll take some fresh pastries and bring them to the terrace.

But the best overall experience was the dinner, where they made over 40 pizzas from freshly made dough in their outdoor wood-fired oven. We walked outside to the patio, where Irene and Paolo were smiling, practically singing, and making pizza after pizza using local, fresh ingredients. We enjoyed an evening of laughter, wine, beer and great, great food, including the nutella/mascarpone crepes also made in the oven. Afterward, some other guests' children joined little Bea making their own pretend pizzas with the leftover ingredients. It was our best dinner in Italy, and we went to some great restaurants. Giovanni also made us a reservation for a great local place one night.

The breakfast was also really excellent. Best coffee. A huge spread of pastries and cakes. All served outside on the patio.

Free wifi, incredible service, impeccable grace and charm.

They are genuinely nice people, and you feel as if you are staying with family, your favorite aunt and uncle who love to dote on you.

Giovanni, Graziella, Paolo, Irene & Bea: Thanks again for the best experience we had during our two weeks in Italy. We hope to see you again. If we are back in Italy, there is no question we will stay at Valdirose again.

Giovanni and his family are incredibly gracious, fun-loving hosts. One night, he and his family made 45 specialty pizzas in a wood-fired oven. I thought, "We must have stumbled on to the set of a show on The Travel Channel." Giovanni, if you're reading this, thank you! I hope to see you again!

Our visit to Florence and Tuscany would not have been complete without our stay at Valdirose. Irene, Paolo, Giovanni and Graciella are warm wonderful hosts who have made their house into a cozy home for others to share and enjoy in luxury. The bed was so very comfortable and the breakfasts sweet with delicious coffee made as only true Italian men can make it. At least English, Spanish and Italian are spoken here but the hospitality shown is never to be forgotten. Thank you, good friends. The dining in and around Lastra a Signa is outrageous. The family can guide you in places to visit and the train station is at the bottom of the hill. We have never stayed at a finer B&B and we travel often. This family spot makes you feel at home in Italy. This is a place you must stay in Tuscany and an Ideal way to enjoy Florence without the high prices.
Thank you Giovani, Palo,Graciella, Irene and Beatrice you each did so much to make oru stay perfect. We look forward to seeing you again soon, a presto.
