“A good affordable hotel”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

D'Orange D'Alcantara is hardly some five star resort in Taormina, but it is also very affordable and not very far from a lot of great locations in Sicily (including Taormina). Francavilla di Sicilia is a charming (albeit small and not touristy) town. The rooms were basic but clean. The staff tried to help. The restaurant in the hotel was okay and there are a couple of small family places in town that have good food. But what I liked about it is it is a great and affordable place to travel from to explore the surrounding area on day trips. There are very interesting hill towns all around Francavilla that are areas I would want to explore in the future. You are not far from Etna, Taormina, Savoca, or Catania. I stayed for about five days in May 2013 and had a good time. I would recommend it.

The British trekking group was there at the same time (they use that hotel as a base), and I might even consider contacting them about doing one of their walking tours in the future (they seemed to have a decent and varied trekking itinerary and their tour guides were very helpful--even to people not in their tour).

A quiet, clean and tidy, family run hotel, 5 minutes walk form the center of the town. While Etna is just out of sight, there are great views of the surrounding hills and the sun seems to shine almost every day!
The hotel is run by the family, who speak English. The welcome is warm and all requests are dealt with quickly and efficiently.
There is a good breakfast buffet and both the quality and quantity of dinner are excellent. A very good wine cellar and advice on lovely local wines is freely given.
The hotel will organize excursions, and is free with advice on places of interest to visit.

I stayed at this hotel for a week as part of a Ramblers walking holiday in late October. Unfortunately, the 14 of us in the group were the only people staying at the hotel, apart from one night when there was another small party of cyclists. As a result, it rather lacked atmosphere, which was a shame as the family were friendly and caring and wanted to please. The buffet breakfast was rather boring, usually with ham, and only one variety of cheese (every day the same cheese). Often the pastries on offer were a little dry, and the only occasion when scrambled egg was available, it looked as if it was powdered, it was pale, tasteless and cold. The coffee, from a machine, was weak, lacking flavour and poor for Sicily (Italy). However, the dinners with four or five courses were excellent and copious, and there was always something to please everyone. Most, if not all bedrooms, had a balcony. They were clean, with tiled floors (and it would have been very noisy had there been more guests), and furnished with basic furniture. The beds were a solid as a rock, and did not give much. The hotel has a roof top terrace and a swimming pool. However, the hotel is ideally situated for walking/cycling holidays, situated as it is in the shadow of Mount Etna surrounded by lovely countryside and scenery, and with Catania, Taormina and Syracuse within easy reach, especially for those with their own transport, the area offers something for everyone too.

Spent one week at this hotel as part of a Ramblers walking holiday. Evening food was excellent - four courses every night which were very good. Breakfast was disappointing though - unless you were there at 7.30 there was no hot food so each day was bread rolls with the same ham and cheese every day which got very dull.
Swimming pool is nice but not heated so was a little chilly.
The town itself has very little to it and be warned that the Ramblers day off (Wednesday) is the same day the entire town shuts down.

During our around-the-Sicliy trip we wanted to spend some time in the in the shade of Etna and found this little hidden hotel. In the end, we spent two night here and we enjoyed the stay.

The hotel is located on the edge of Francavilla di Sicilia, a small town in a valley between mountains. It is really calm there and the views are really nice.

The staff was really helpful and nice through our whole stay.

The room was very nice with a small terrace and very spacious bathroom with an ancient-like tiling decorations. We slept very well here.

There is a pool on the roof with great views and plenty of sun loungers - it is perferct for a quick evening dip after a day spent exploring the nearby wonders (go see Alcantara Gorge - it's nearby and it's well worth the trip).

The breakfast was really simple, but sufficient.

If you're looking for a nice calm base to trips to the neighborhood, stop looking - this hotel offers great value for your money and you can easily drive to beaches in Taormina or Giardini Naxos or to Etna.

If you are in a car & looking for hotel in quiet town, this is ideal. We thought this was very good value for money during our stay 06/06 - 13/06/2013. Room & 6' double bed (2x3' pushed together) spacious incl. balcony (8'x4'). Bathroom again spacious with towels changed everyday. Staff friendly & helpful, buffet breakfast typical but good continental. Evening meal menu good choice incl. tourist 3-course, plus pizzas. Swimming pool on roof with plenty of sun loungers. With car about 20 min. drive to Giardini Naxos on E. coast. Buses do run but not frequent to Taormina.

The hotel d'Orange is special because it is a real, hands-on family-run hotel - and it shows. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly staff. The rooms were clean and there was always hot water for showers even when 20 tired ramblers returned after a long day in the mountains. The food was delicious, varied and often typically Sicillian.
