We were advised to visit this restaurant by a friend who works in the area and frequents Al Solito.
Well, what can I say, having travelled and eaten extensively throughout Italy over the last 15 years this place rates in my top 10.
Lets put it this way,we were puglia for 7 nights and ate at Al Solito 3 times.
The restaurant is tucked away and it is truely a 'hidden gem' .
My husband and I booked a table and rather smuggly said " I dont expect you'll be full" how wrong could we be.
We booked the table for 9 pm on a sunday evening and as expected when we arrived and sat at our inside talble we were one of 3 occupied tables. " this doesn't bode well......." Or so we thought. Within 15 minutes the place was heaving with wonderfully large, noisey ,Italian families. The buzz was electric.
The staff greeted each and every one with a kiss or a hug and carried on about their hectic chores.
We saw the most amazing dishes appear from the kitchen and having already ordered our pizza's from the menu with our 6 euro litre bottle of house fizz! We were starting to regret our choice. What was interesting was the fact that of course no one was given the menu. What were we thinking. No wonder they looked at us with disdain.
We had totally forgotten the mantra " dont order from the menu, let them give you what they want"
The food was superb the wine even better.
The second visit 2 days later had us welcomed as old friends with a typical Italian greeting. This time we just asked what they were cooking that day. The waitress smiled explained that the had fresh porchini mushrooms which they were cooking with pasta. So that was what we were having and damn was it good!
The atmosphere was buzzy, staff great and locals so friendly.
So thats why 2 days later we were back!!
Food, wine, service, staff first class.
Thank you to all the staff. We were the English couple who sat in the corner , black lady, white man.
We will be back !
