Leave Vulcano port on the road and after approximately three quarters of a mile take a signposted path on the left. The climb is on a good path and takes about one hour to reach the crater. The height gain is around 350 meters. It is possible to walk around the rim of the crater but steam and sulphur outpourings were too great for us to complete it on the day. The views into the crater are excellent as are views of neighbouring islands. Footwear suitable for hill walking should be worn.

The path to the crater is mostly made of sand and very small rocks. I would recommend a good pair of gym shoes or better some trekking shoes that can be easily rented in town for a small fee. It takes about 45 minutes to get up with a very slow pace and the view along the path and above is spectacular! I've been told that the sunset from the crater is amazing so we started our walk at around 6pm. We had to wait for about an hour before we could see the sky tinted in red, pink and orange colours that are typical of sunset but it was definitely worth it! From the top of the volcano you can easily see the other 6 islands: Lipari, Panarea and Stromboli to the East side and Salina, Filicudi and Alicudi to the West side. Absolutely fantastic!

Climbing this volcano is not too difficult. The view up there is fantastic on a clear day. You can even see the Stromboli. But beware of the fumes. They are very strong and here's my warning: when you'll go back to your hotel, that smell will stay on your body even after a shower, and worse, when you'll wash your clothes, the smell will transfer in your cotton clothes, even those you were not wearing during the climb.
