“Harry Shaw coach trip, Dec 2012 - Gpod Value budget hotel..”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

I read all the reviews about this hotel before we traveled and to be honest, some i agree with, some I don't....

This 4 day trip, 3 nights b&b cost me £99, so please take that into account, ie TOTAL BARGAIN, so this hotel could only have been getting £20 ish from us as a couple, so that's how I am basing my review.

The rooms were a good size, spotlessly clean and hot water and towells all fine.. minor points, no tea making stuff and small bathroom, but hey, I'm not in there much ! Somebody does comment on the train noise, this is very true, but as it was December and the room windows were well and truly shut it was not a problem, so my advice is to ask for a room at the back of the hotel (non Rhine side) or pack a 99p pair of ear plugs in case it bothers you. I would imagine in the summer the windows would need leaving open ?

Breakfast was perfectly nice, typically german and clearly done on a budget, but I enjoyed it and couldn't fault it for value. The Waitresses were nice to me and even more so as I made some attempt to speak German which they seemed to appreciate.

Hotel location is great, basically opposite the Rhine which can be seen, and if you walk out you can go and sit on the river bank, clearly not in December ! The village of Lahnstein is lovely, very quaint but not a great deal to do there, but not a bad base.

We didn't eat at the hotel, but most of our coach did, feedback was that food was plentiful and good quality, though only one option available, not really any good for me as a vegetarian, which the Germans are not very good at !

If you go out of the hotel and go forward down the main shopping street, turn left at the end onto Adolfstrasse we found a very nice Italian and bit further down a Chinese. Both were very very good, the italian was dirt cheap (around E8 for pizza/pasta) and lovely, the Chinese was a bit more expensive around E10 for main dish, but well worth it and both restaurants had an english menu if you asked.

In short, good value budget hotel, its not sheer luxury, but if that's what you want then I suggest you delve a bit deeper into your'e pockets !! I would stay here again without question and found it clean, tidy and well located.

Stayed here two nights late November as part of a coach tour.
We were the only residents/guests and felt as if we were inconveniencing some of the staff by being there.
Dinner was served at fixed time. The cellar bar was staffed by a rather surly barman who did not want to be there subsequently we left and visited various other Gasthaus where we made to feel most welcome.
This Hotel served its purpose as a convenient overnight stop as part of a tour but I wouldnt elect to stay there whilst travelling independently.
Dining room staff were friendly and efficient
Views from rooms facing Rhine were excellent

Room Tip: Ask for River view room 3rd floor

Good clean spacious room with round bed! Although it was noisy because of the trains we did not sleep badly even with windows open. No choices for dinner but the food was very good. Plenty of choices for breakfast. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Room safe did not work. The staff were very nice and helpful. We loved our cruise on the Rhine. In all very good value for the money.

We visited this hotel as part of a Newmarket Travel tour, "Rhine in Flames". Rooms fairly basic but then we had not paid a lot and there were one or two nice touches like wooden coat hangers and a music player in room with a pretty good selection of English tunes. We also found room very clean and liked having duvets rather than sheets and blankets as you often get in hotels. The room was not spacious and looked like it had beeen partitioned off from a bigger room. The shower room was a very small cubicle - neither me or my husband are all that big but anyone slightly overweight may have experienced problems. No tea or coffee making facilties. We could not get safe to work but did not bother too much as only staying three nights and had not brought anything with us of a great deal of value. Breakfasts were quite tasty with a nice selection of meat and cheeses and fresh rolls - although the orange juice was a bt thin. We had paid for two nights' dinners but due apparently to hotel having problems with kitchen and us arriving late only had the one evening meal there. This was pretty uninspiring and definitely not worth £12 each - there was no choice at all. Staff were generally nice and helpful although the owner was not too nice on first night - probably because we did not arrive until around midnight as our coach drivers had taken a wrong turn. There is a nice little bar in the basement and the location of the hotel is quite charming and convenient. If was in the area would consider staying again if the price was right. It was nosiy because of trains. We did not sleep too badly beause we were absolutely exhausted most of the time but had to close window which we were not happy about because we always sleep with window open.

Despite asking if they could accommodate a vegan diet and assured they could I was given cauliflower for one dinner , green beans the next night and after a complaint I was given a stir fry which was lovely but the next night back to only a vegetable. I had to eat out most of the holiday and owner wasn't too happy that I complained . Stay away from this hotel if you are vegetarian or vegan.

Good Rooms, our shower was very good. Comfy bed, and nice decent Evening meals.
We loved our Rhine Crusie to Rudesheim. Great value for money. We know its next to the Railway but we slept okay.
We could go anywhere by bus or train on our free day. Good food on the boat and a super Bus driver made this a great tour. We would recommend this hotel for a nice holiday, only down side no decent lounge.

Would go again. 2 Happy TRavellers.

With trains passing the front of the Hotel on an average of every six minutes, 24/7 if you are a train spotter, you will be in paradise! Even with the newly installed double glazed windows, sleep will be a problem for the first few nights, unless you are someone who can switch off from external noise. You may be fortunate to get a comfortable round bed in the very clean rooms.

The breakfast is a buffet with a choice of cereals, cooked meats, cheeses, fruit juices, boiled eggs and tea and coffee. Eat as much as you want - but do not take any extra away with you. You may get charged extra for that.

Evening meal starts with soup - I am 99% sure it is made from a packet. You have to guess the flavour but you can tell it is supposed to be tomato from the colour. If you ask for a glass of tap water, you will asked to purchase a bottle of water. The main course is take it or leave it - as there is no choice and everyone gets the same.

The family who run it speak good Engish and appreciate the guests attempts to communicate in German - so learn a few suitable sentences.
