Gemunder ferienhaus Salzberg

As a visitor of 5 RCI locations in Spain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the UK my overall rating for Gemund is very high.

Location:
First of all this is the first location our navigation found without a problem. some RCI locations are 'hidden' and extremly hard to find. the directions to this location was good also without a navigation, you'll find it.

Gemund is well located between the cities Aachen and Cologne. The drive to cologne is about 45 mins, Malmady, Belgium about 1hr and Maastricht (The Netherlands) 1.5hr drive. Based in the middle of the Eiffel forest it's a pleasure waking up with a forrest view. Most apartments have the same view. There's not much to do in gemund town but there are some clothes shops, bakery, butcher, take-away restaurants and a pharmacy. Just down the road (first left, first right and down the hill) are 2 supermarkets. One is kind of a budget supermarket compared to Lidl or Aldi, the other one is Rewe, compared to a small Tesco's. Both aren't expensive compared to other supermarkets and both are opened from 8.00 untill 20.00 and Netto is open until 22.00, daily except Sundays. The backery at the Rewe supermarket is also open on Sundays between 8.00 and 11.00 or you can buy fresh rolls at the reception. Both supermarkets accept credit and debot cards.
Within 500 meters of the hotel are 2 restaurants which we didn't try whilst our stay.

Parking:
We stayed here during the summer and there was sufficient free parking next to our appartment. You don't have to worry at all.

Appartment:
I can only write about our appartment but I'm sure the following applies to most if not all appartments. All appartments are smoke free, you can smoke on the balcony.

We stayed at appartment 345 with a view of the forest.
Once opening the front door you enter into a large and spacious hall way with doors to the bedroom, bathroom and livingroom.

The hotel also provides suggestions what to do during your stay including a well documented folder about the regional activities.

Hall:
There's a utility cupboard with an iron, ironingboard, bucket, washingrack, soft broom and so on.

Bedroom:
The bedroom is spacious with 3 windows equipped with roller blinds and curtains. The windows look brand new and can be opened fully or just an opening of the top side. Leaving the roller blinds slightly open allowing enough fresh air during the summer nights and keeping you safe from potential burgulars. Even with the summer sun and 2 days of 30 degrees the appartment stays cool and no sticky sleeping. The bedroom is equipped with an alarm clock/radio.
The bed is comfortable but personally I prefer a hard cushion. The ones here are just too soft for my personal preference.

Bathroom/Toilet
The bathroom is also spacious with a shower, toilet and bacin.
The shower is big enough for 1 adult and 2 kids. Yes, my kids like to shower with daddy, from time to time :). The shower has those plastic doors keeping the water in. I personally find this more hygenic than a shower curtain. There's no bath but they do provide a tall plug so kids can sit in the water. The bathroom has a seperate window with blinds. The bathroom is very clean, with white kitting which is still white, no fungus what so ever. The water is nice and hot and the waterpressure is good. I just hate bad water pressure, it feels like somebody's peeing on you. Not here though, it's pretty good.
Towels are nice and soft, you may replace towels on tuesdays.

Kitchen / Livingroom
The open kitchen is well equiped with a built in oven, electric stove, dish washer, microwave , toaster, filter coffee machine and water boiler, decent size fridge/freezer, plates, cuttlery, kitchen utensils and a smoke alarm. Gemund provides approx. 10 dishwasher soaps, washing soap, coffee filters but no coffee, Salt & Pepper, some plastic rubbish bags. Enough saucepans, fryingpans and other kitchen needs are available. We didn't miss out on anything whilst cooking here daily. They even supply bakingpaper for the oven.

The water is drinkable, not like home but better than some other places where we've stayed.

The lighting all over the appartment is good. Not only the lighting but also the amount of windows.
The floor is laminated and in the living room there's a large floormat, very comfortable for the kids to play.
The livingroom has a 4 person dinner table with comfortable seats, a sleeping/couch for 3 people and 2 single seats with a poof.
My kids wake up early so they go to bed early as well so they slept in the bedroom. My wife and I slept on the sleeping/ coach for 6 nights.

The couch is easy to open for sleeping and easy to put back together, a matter of seconds.
We're used to good quality matrasses at home and I must stay this couch/bed was very comfortable.

The appartments are equipped with a corded phone, a TV and DVD player. Our TV was a box, not a flatscreen so no HDMI connection to connect the ipad or android tablets, the DVD was a simple Philips which did the job. Also a set of board games was provided.
The TV selection for a non German speakers is pretty rubbish. CNN, BBC world and Netherlands 2, is all there is. So if you have young kids that need to go to bed on time it's great the ferienpark provide movies you can rent free of charge. You may 'rent' 3 movies at once.

Balcony:
Our appartment was located on a corner so our Balcony was slightly larger. Nevertheless, all balconies seem large enough for 4 people. The balconies are equiped with 4 chairs and a round table. I'm sure that this is what a balcony railing should be like but please be aware.

Internet:
The appartments do not have an Internet connection yet but whilst our stay we where informed that this will be the case very soon. Whilst our stay they where working on the preperations to supply wifi. For the time being you may use wifi at the receptation area for free. The speed is slow but fast enough to download emails, skype but it isnt as fast as I'm used too at home, 150mbit. 3G connection works fine as I checked my business email a couple of times a day.

Reception:
The staff is very friendly and helpful whenever you need them. You may 'rent' 3 DVd's a day for free. They have about 300 relativly new movies to choose from and another 100 movies for kids. Movies are also in English.
The reception has 2 computers connected with Internet should you've left you tablet or laptop at home. Wifi is supplied all over the reception building. Most people nowadays have their own portable computer or tablet so you can sit in one of the play and library rooms. You'll also find a handsome selection of books in all languages and a play area for kids. Going down to the cellar you have a table tennis table and a football table. Batts and balls will be supplied at the reception for free.

In the building you may, after reserving, enter the sauna which i didnt use but looks fine.

Every morning, expect Sunday, a local baker arrives so you can purchase fresh bread and rolls for breakfast. We didn't try this but I'm sure it's good quality.

There's a couple of washing machines available including washing powder, so no need to buy. A wash costs just 2 euro's
If you want you may reserve trips at reduced prices and also very well priced massages and beauty services. A 30 minute massage costs about 20 euro's which by all means is reasonable compared to the prices i'm used too (35 euro's)

All in all this one of the best RCI holiday appartments we've visited so far.

Hygene is impecible, facilities are good, well organized and friendly staff.
The rest is up to you :)

On a rainy day the kids can have a great time at Activi, which is an indoor play area for kids. 2 adults and 2 kids costs 18 euro's but they'll have enough fun for the day. Make sure they wear some lit clothing as it can get pretty hot running around all day.

This is our second visit thru RCI.
Highly recommend Gemuender Ferienwohnpark.
Actually got to stay in the very same unit as our last visit.
Great jumping off spot to see the National Park Eifel and surrounding area.
Plan to make another visit possibly next year. Always wonderful service.
As people have written no elevators and the buildings do go up 3 floors. I am 5'1...I just take my time bringing my bags up and down the stairs. Not that big of a deal.
All buildings have key access, so only the people staying in the building can enter.
They do have wifi access, but you have to go to the office to use it.
Also, you can borrow movies...they have a very large selection.
The Condo's face into the The National Park. Lots of interesting sights to see inside the National Park..
We traveled to Aachen. Spent the day at the Carolus Thermen. If you haven't experienced the baths and suanas of Germany, this would be a great place to go for your first time.
I had my birthday lunch in the town of Bad Munstereifel.
Lunch in the castle is always a fun thing to do..
A visit to the Mariawald Abbey is always interesting. You can attend their Mass which they do totally in Latin. (Given Permission to do so by Pope Benedict XVI).
The Monks make their own cheese (very tasty), Alcohol and Jellies...
We also made a trip to Cochem. Great wines are produced here. The city sits on the Moselle.
A bit of a drive from Gemund, but well worth it..
I also must mention a very nice restaurant, great for breakfast. Its in Hofen, it's called
Altes Eifelhaus. Very small with a thatched roof, in a building dating back to the 1600s. Very nice....
We left Gemuender Ferienwohnpark and headed into other parts of Germany to finish our trip. Will add more later....

We stayed here using an RCI exchange. The front desk staff were all wonderful and helpful. We were given a room in the main building but asked for one of the other buildings overlooking the valley and she had no problem exchanging it for us. There are no elevators, but we were on the first floor so we only had to go up one small set of stairs. We had a very roomy one bedroom apartment. It was quiet and although I think it was completely booked, we didn't hear any noise from the neighbors. No wifi access in apartments but they have a great balcony, everything you can think of in the kitchen, and a tv - mostly German channels but they have an English speaking news channel. They also have a great free DVD library at reception. In the main building, they have a small exercise room with an elliptical, two exercise bikes, and some weights. Next to the gym they have a very nice sauna room with both dry and wet saunas, showers, and a relaxation room. Small, but very efficient. They have wifi access in the reception lobby and two computers for guest to use and they also have wifi in the downstairs "business room" which is a room with four tables, chairs and some toys for kids. They have an honor system bar stocked with mineral water, beer and coke/diet coke. The location is at the top of a hill. I wouldn't say it walkable for safety reasons. Between ice and narrow roads, I wouldn't walk up and down it and I walk EVERYWHERE. Regardless, the location is very local to many areas. We visited the cities and Christmas markets in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Bonn, Aachen, Liege-Belgium, all within a couple hours driving distance. You are also right next to Eifel National Park so there are a ton of walking/hiking trails and things to see. Although Ferienwohnpark was not a "luxurious" timeshare, it was very efficient, and had everything you need for a weeks stay in Germany. I would go back again in a heartbeat.

The weather was great the latter part of May when we stayed at Gemender Ferienwohnpark Salzberg. We loved this area of Germany - the resort is in a National Park -- very green, very scenic region. When we first checked in with lovely Maryam at the front desk, we knew we were going to be happy here! However, the first unit assigned to us had a view overlooking the parking lot. I asked Maryam if we could move to another unit. She gave us a really great one. It was spacious, private, new, and had a beautiful view of green, trees, and sunsets to die for! It also had a private balcony/patio where we had drinks and meals often. The kitchen was fully equipped and had pots and pans I wish I had at home! They were brand new and the handles don't get hot! :-) You can borrow DVD's at no charge; we did. Besides a separate bedroom with a nice window and view, we also had a nice sofa that made into a bed. This made TV watching very comfortable. We did not use the spa or fitness facilities; they looked okay. The internet is only accessible from the lobby building, but it is free and was very helpful. We purchased this week through RCI. It was a great value for the unit we ended up with. Within a short drive there are two grocery and wine stores. The towns of Gemund and Schleiden have other nice, little shops and are fun to explore. We went to a super fun renaissance faire at a castle -- Berg Eltz -- about 20 minutes from the resort. Monschau is a superb litlle town to visit and very nearby. We also visited Cologne, Aachen, and Bruges, Belgium -- all within relatively easy driving distance. We were always happy to get "home" to Gemunder Ferienwohnpark -- very comfortable, very homey; plus had Maryam to greet us and ask about our day!

Room Tip: Ask for a newer unit - the end one we had was very priviate with a lovely view.

Gemunder Ferienpark Salzberg has very friendly helpful staff, plenty of parking and nicely situated apartments. Our 1 bedroom apartment was spotlessly clean and looked to be recently refurbished. The bedroom is a nice size with plenty of wardrobe space, the twins beds pushed together were quite firm but comfortable. The lounge area has plenty of room with dining table and chairs beside the kitchen area. All the equipment in the kitchen looked to be brand new and hardly used. Very efficient oven, dish washer and large fridge with small freezer area. Plenty of utensils and pots and pans. There is a guest lounge where free wifi is available. The apartment had plenty of room for two people, it may be a bit crowded if four people are staying.

Two supermarkets at the bottom of the hill, Netto and REWE, both good and reasonably priced. REWE seemed to be better for fresh fruit and vegetables. Supermarkets and most shops are closed on a Sunday.

We ate at some very nice restaurants in the area, Hotel Restaurant Haus Salzberg is 500 metres down the hill, great food and 10% discount when paying cash.  Hotel Hermanns in Olef is 12 minutes by car, excellent food at a very reasonable price.

There are several places to visit within an hour or so driving, Rhenish Open Air Museum at Kommern is a very interesting place to visit, if the weather is good take a picnic. Monschau is a lovely place to visit and a day trip to Cologne on the train is very easy to do from Kall station. the girls on the reception desk will be able to give you all the information that you need for the station.

All in all this was a great place to stay for a week in Germany, we hope to go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room.

Checking in was very efficient we were allocated apartment 114 which was in the reception building. Beware there are no lifts. The resort consists of several houses on a private residential estate just outside the town. The apartments opposite the reception area have balconies overlooking the valley so if there interior is as good as the one we were given I would in future request one of these. Our apartment was well furnished with plenty of wardrobe and storage space. The bedroom was quite small and the kitchen diner was of a decent size but although the apartment could accommodate 4 it would have been very crowded, but it was fine for us and we had a balcony that overlooked the parking which was a pity. The newly fitted kitchen had a full oven, microwave, and dishwasher and it was all very well laid out and was of good quality. The shower room (no bath!) was well decorated but again on the small size. There is a large CRT TV with limited English Channels but we brought some DVD’s with us, and there is free rental of DVD’s in reception. Not sure how many were in English, but there were shelves of them! The laminate flooring throughout was easy to clean but made the apartment quite clinical and a large rug would have enhanced the living are, especially on a cool overcast day. The resort is situated about a twenty minute walk from the town which had several restaurants and pubs but not all open in the evening. But it was quite a steep walk back in the evening. There are two supermarkets REWE and a Netto. We found the REWE to be very good with a good range of produce and a separate off licence next door. The prices we thought seemed cheaper than England and the alcohol certainly was with my husband stocking up on Amaretto at 4 euros a bottle. The reception area is open at set times and there is free WIFI (code from reception) in the little guest lounge in the basement. The lounge also included a children’s area with books and good old fashioned board games and no noisy toys. It also housed a fridge with cheap beer (honesty box) and you could also buy local wine from the reception. The basement area also had a sauna, fitness suite and laundry room. There is no maid cleaning if you are only staying for a week, but this can be requested for a small charge. Clean towels can be exchanged at reception The resort does not feel like a timeshare complex - more like an upmarket rental. There is plenty to do in the area we visited, Bonn, Vogelsang, Kommern, Monschau, Trier and Reifferscheid and Wildeneurg, all worth a visit. In fact there is still so much to see we will be back!

Room Tip: Top tip weather can be very changeable so be prepared for sun, rain, sun, rain every day!
