Despite booking through our premier banking service (who incidentally used a German Speaking agent) and checking the day before arrival that our booking was secured, we arrived to be met by an extremely rude manager who denied all knowledge of the booking (subsequently, Barclays have checked the recorded telephone booking confirmation and both times the manager accepted the booking). We showed the manager the e-mail confirmation , but again were met with a stony faced refusal to admit the booking and no inclination to accommodate our party of 6. After trawling around all the restaurants in Monschau we were finally accepted into the Pizza restaurant in the square who seemed to be the only restaurant that wanted to serve people. We were extremely dissatisfied with Monschau, we were even refused access to the beer museum/bar for a beer due to us having not booked (for a beer!!). Please be aware that Monschau is not good for turning up off spec. Please make sure you book in advance and check again with the restaurant yourself to avoid our disappointment.

Restaurant situated just outside town, with private parking. It's very cosy and the service is perfect. Kids had wienerschnitzel with pommes frites, one of the best schnitzels we ever tasted. Adults had venisson and a marvelous tender piece of porc. All of the dishes were prepared with mustard, but very delicately. A real discovery! We also had tea and coffee 'komplet'. The tea was prepared at the table and the coffee came in a genuine bone coffee pot. Both accompanied by chocolate pralines with, again very subtle touch of mustard. The wine list is extensive and very reasonably priced. We had two bottles from the 'secrets of the cellar', both spätburgunder and both a revelation. We'll go back when in the neighbourhood.

We wanted to visit the quaint little town of Monschau as it is a place that wasn't touched at all by the wars and looked really nice in pictures as well as having a mustard factory. We went to this restaurant(part of the mustard factory/store). They don't have an english menu but the lovely waitress, I think she was the owner as well, explained what everything was. I was a little concerned not really completely understanding but went with a pasta/vegetable dish with a creamy mustard sauce. It was delicious. The pasta was actually spatzle, hmmmm. Included with this dish was a garden salad, really nice as well. One of my friends had a salada with feta cheese, she said was delicious. Two of my male friends had a delicious roast beef dinner where the roast beef had been marinading for over 24 hours. They said it was delicious. I would eat here again. The atmosphere, quality of food and value were all great.

After being surprisignly please with the nice town of Monschau we decided to go to a place just following our instinct from the information contained in a small touristic guide.
After a qite long walk which was a litle bit disappointing we arrived to a place which looks not too atractive since it was close to the bus parking place.

It was not the case at all.

A surprising charmin atmosphere, with a very good selection of local dishes.
The 2 dishes we took to share, a matjes with potatoes and beef tongue salad were simply delicious.
Very good and not expensive offer of local wines...and specially a very professional, honest and charming service. A guy and a midle age woman which made us feeling at home. Thanks for this.

A hidden gem to keep on mind
