“Magical castle in an enchanting forest - a true Fairytale experience”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We stayed at 'Sleeping Beauty's' castle for 2 nights and had a super, relaxing stay. Our 2 young daughters were particularly bowled over by the Fairytale allure of the castle - a Romantic turreted folly overlooking magnificent scenery, fringed by glorious forest entirely reminiscent of the fairy tale this castle is thematically in thrall to. We had spectacular summer sunsets as we ate our dinners on the castle terrace (the food was wonderful - imaginative and delicious and inspired by local produce and game; plentiful venison and wild boar!) accompanied by the delightful song of swallows circling and swooping around the castle's towers. The bedrooms were rather dated but comfortable nevertheless with splendid views from their balconies. Close by is the 'tier park' - an extensive zoological garden with a number of child-oriented play zones and a 'train' (in reality a bus) to tour visitors around the huge animal enclosures. The wolves were particularly fascinating. This made for a fun-packed family day out (including our dog!) for just 19 euros! Tremendous value when you consider the exorbitant prices charged by most zoos and theme parks these days. All in all we had a delightful stay at Sababurg.

My daughter and I stayed for one night where we were greeted with very friendly staff. The setting and gardens were beautiful and the accomidations were average with modern conviences. One thing where we were dissappointed was the sleeping rooms as they were modern in comparison to the surroundings. The food and service was exceptional.

The stay my family and I had at this hotel was practically perfect. The beds were extremely comfy and the food was superb-definitely had the best asparagus cream soup of the entire trip! Despite having to change the number of people we needed to room a number of different times they were very accommodating and polite about it. We only stayed for one night but if our trip hadn't been set then staying here at Sababurg would have been wonderful. Despite having the potential for being romantic, it wasn't awkward to go as a large family (There is even a zoo within walking distance). Also, while we did not speak a lick of German they were able to accommodate with that as there was an English speaking woman to help at the desk and another to help with the menus at dinner. We stayed in many different hotels and apartments while in Europe on our trip and this was definitely one of the best ones amongst them. For some in our group this was their first taste of Germany and it left such made a fantastic first impression. For a girl who loves her fairytales this stay was a dream turned reality and between seeing the spinning wheel and knowing Rapunzel's Castle was just ten minutes drive away I was in Heaven. On my next trip to Germany I would definitely consider going out of my way just to stay here again.

Room Tip: The rooms that are in the tower are pricier but more resembling of a fairytale but for anyone on a b...

My daughter and I stayed here a few months ago for 3 days. The castle is set in a beautiful forest and is very peaceful....but what made our stay here so wonderful was the service and wonderful staff member, Annette. The moment we arrived she welcomed us with a beaming smile and helped us to our room with our bags. On to lunch in the beer garten where she spent so much time translating the menu for us and recommending meals. I still crave a piece of the almond and gooseberry cake. Beautiful dinners in their restaurant overlooking the nature park, more exceptional service from Annette who seemed to run the hotel, nothing was too much trouble. After already traveling in Europe for 4 weeks loved the peace and quiet and slow pace here, the service by Annette was some of the best we have ever experienced on any of our overseas travels in Europe and Asia.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the bigger rooms...ours was small and not as inviting as the larger options.

We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and being off the grid...no TV & no internet...so it was a really private time for the two of us. The staff in the dining room were fabulous & we typically spent 3 hours having dinner and watching the animals from the farm below and the animal park further down. We never once felt rushed. We also enjoyed the journey of discovery that is the art, garden & castle story of Sleeping Beauty that is installed there.

The setting was very romantic and our regular double room has a very nice view of tier park. Dinning room has a beautiful view of tier park at the sunset. The service was the best on our 14 days trip as the staff went above and beyond to make us happy. They gave us a little rose jam when we checked out. Definitely will go back if we have an opportunity to do so.

I had my heart set on staying here when I read about it as being on the Brothers Grimm 'Fairy Tale' Route. As you approach the castle by car the impression is truly magical. The views surrounding the castle are also inspiring. The staff are helpful and friendly. With so much going for it we did have a few niggly criticisms, and these are based on what we expected for the prices we paid. Our room felt somewhat tired and the bathroom fixtures were outdated. The shower unit in particular struck me as very '70s' - it was clunky and the chrome fittings were clinical, not classy. If our room is an indication of what the other rooms are like, then be prepared to step back in time, but not in a magical way.
The food was more aspirational than inspirational. There were aspects of each course my husband and I chose that just didn't work; the rose-flavoured pasta was too odd; the smoked pig cheeks were far too smoky and uncomfortably pink; the fried quail's egg which came with my first course had its yolk fried solid - inadmissable in a good restaurant.
And a note to the breakfast hostess: wait until your guest has finished their cold course before bringing them their hot scrambled eggs.
If this was a school report, the Dornroeschenschloss in Sababurg would fall in the 'Could do better' category.
But it is a wonderful, fairy tale setting!
