Whilst Stuttgart is a relative modern setting compared to other German Christmas markets, the market itself is full of charm and some of the best decorated stalls I have seen. Even better than my favourite market Nuremberg. The market is spread out over 5 areas as to not pack everyone in to one crowded area, each with its own food stands and place to eat and drink. Goods on offer range from hand crafted tradition trinkets and textiles to commercial goods for baking. Surrounding the market is some really impressive architecture well worth taking a look at. Whether your there for a couple of hours or an over night stay you can't fail to fall in love with this market. Enjoy

I was on business and my hosts brought me to the Christmas market on the opening night. . It was fantastic and really made me feel Christmasy. Esslingen is a beautiful city which is made even more stunning by this market.

We spent several weeks in Germany and went to Christmas Markets in Nurnberg and Munich along with several others but this one turned out to be our favorite. It was just plain fun!!! The Medieval Market was so cool. Very easy to get to by S-Bahn from Stuttgart. I want to go back when the Christmas Market is not going on now. Beautiful little town and the grape vineyards for mile going up the sides of the hills are a sight to see. Loved it!

Recently spent 11 days touring German and Austrian Christmas markets and have to say we enjoyed this small town market as much as any we visited. It is easily accessible by train on the S1 from Stuttgart Hbf station. Trip takes about 20 minutes.
Once you arrive it is a short walk to the old town and the markets. On the way you begin to see some of the old midieval , half timbered houses, ornate spire of the 13th century St. Paul's, a Dominican church and the fast flowing waters of the river Neckar. The old town itself has a picturesque rathaus, cobblestone streets, the twin spired church of St. Dionysus, and numerous quaint restaurants and cafes.
But the real reason for our visit was the Christmas market and the midieval market. Both were extremely festive, colorful and engaging. Especially so for the midieval market which included the vendors dressed in period costumes, a stage where there were continuous skits occurring, handmade crafts and wonderfully tasty treats being sold. The ornately decorated stands added to the historic feel to the market. A thoroughly enjoyable day was spent here.

Esslingen is easily reached by S-bahn from Stuttgart (about 15 minutes) and is well worth a visit (with or without the market!). The Christmas market is part 'normal' market (in the main market square) and part medieval, ie, the stalls and stall keepers are set as if in the olden days, with craftsmen making items as their work stations. It is great fun too, with men on stilts, several stage performances, the opportunity to try your hand at archery and so on.
if you are feeling energetic, or just need to work off the calories after gluwein and sausages (or wild boar cooked over a spit), there is the opportunity to climb up just over 300 steps to the walkway at Esslingen Castle where you will be rewarded with a great view of the town.
