Ancienne Maison des Gardes
Ranked #7 of 12 Lourmarin B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 20, 2011

A great litle B&B - friendly owners and excellent location and facilities. I only stayed 3 nights but would have happily spent a week there. Breakfast was plentiful and great value. Lourmarin is a great village, full of life. Would definitely recommend this place.

We can only say "Hear, hear!" to the other reviewers who've rated this place "excellent". We were there in May and stayed in the "Courtyard Studio", which had recently been renovated. We found it just right for our needs. The kitchen will get you through breakfast and lunch, but, if you are a gourmet chef who'd like to prepare fine cuisine with the wonderful foodstuffs available in the area, you'd probably prefer the apartment, which has a serious kitchen. We ate our major meal (either noon or evening) in restaurants, so the kitchen in the studio was all we needed.

The bathroom was up to date with all fixtures working and hot water delivered as demanded. The bed-sitting room quite comfortable and more than adequate for our needs..

Perhaps our favorite feature, however, was our private area of the courtyard where we took our meals when we ate in and had our glasses of wine in the evening, a lovely and peaceful setting.

As others have mentioned, the availability of Rose and Robin to advise about nearby destinations and restaurants is invaluable - but they are careful to respect your needs when privacy if your preference.

Lourmarin is a picturesque village, but it is not a "find" tucked in an unknown corner of Provence. (Are there any of those left?) The town is a major tourist destination, but, in May, except during the wonderful Friday market, it never felt crowded. While none of the restaurants are ones you'd travel miles to eat at, several of them are "good-enough" places to get a meal when you don't want to cook in, but don't want to get in the car and drive either.

We'd love to go back to Lourmarin. And, if we did, we'd want to stay right there in Rose's Courtyard Studio once again.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Ancienne Maison des Gardes. It is tucked in the corner of the town centre so you have the best of both worlds…1 minute walk from the shops/restaurants as well avoiding any possible noise. It is definitely worth opting for the “petit dejeuner” – a yummy breakfast spread!

This review is long overdue.

We stayed with at Ancienne Maison des Gardes for three nights as our last stop of a three week trip in Provence. It is always such a great feeling when realizing upon arrival, that you have made the right choice, as it was with us in this case! After a lot of research, we chose to stay right in this beautiful village and it was spot on for the following reasons:

The host: Rose is informative, fun, helpful and attentive. She assisted with restaurant recommendations as well as reservations and supplied us with local information as well as trip ideas.
The room: We were too late to book a bigger apartment, but found that the Balcony Room was just perfect for our needs. We had meals and wine on the lovely balcony often and although compact, the room had everything we needed. The kitchen in a closet was also very handy.
The location: We always like to stay in old towns everywhere and again in this case, it was the right choice. The property is situated in a more quiet part of the village, at the outer part. It was just so convenient and we found parking right nearby as well.

Rose and Robin were excellent hosts with many suggestions about local restaurants and places to visit. We had the smallest of 3 apartments and were able to prepare snack meals Close proximity to local shops allowed for a wide selection of pastries and fruits in season. A choice of cafes and gelati shops made people watching a very enjoyable experience every afternoon following a visit to one of many quaint nearby villages. We would certainly like to return.

Rose and Robin could not have been more helpful during our stay in Lourmarin. Ancienne Maison was exactly the kind of quiet, authentic place we were looking for to enjoy Provence. Lourmarin was by far the most charming village we visited in the area. Not overly touristed like Gordes nearby. Rose took great care to help us find reastaurants, wineries, and things to fill our four days here. We stayed in the apartment with the cellar bedroom. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything one needs to eat in or make snacks. Would definitely return and stay here. Lourmarin and the guest house were perfect!!

My wife and I stayed in the Courtyard Apartment for two nights during our trip to Provence. The room itself was perfect -- clean, well furnished, and with a full kitchen and outdoor dining area (which came in handy after our day at the market). The web site doesn't do the room justice -- I believe they may have refreshed the room since those photos were taken. The best part are the hosts, Rose and Robin. Rose gave us an outstanding restaurant recommendation at a nearby town, which turned out to be one of the high points of our trip. Since my French is so-so, she was even kind enough to make the reservation for me! They were also very helpful in giving us sightseeing tips. I would most definitely stay here again.
