This was a very handy base near the centre of Vernon with easy walking around the town and to the river. The room was comfortable and clean though not overly spacious. The staff were very obliging and helpful, good food in the Restaurant too with a lounge available throughout the day. The decor had a feeling of 'Old English Pub' but was welcoming in a chilly February!

This is an average hotel, at a 10 minute walking distance from the railway station, where you can also find the bus for Giverny (be careful and get informed about the timetable, it runs only every 2 hours...). I stayed in this hotel 2 days, coming from Paris and heading to Rouen after visiting Giverny. The weather was pretty cool and the room really cold. I tried to use the heater but it did not work. I was really lucky not to get cold. Room was quite clean but the bed lining was looking as somebody else before me used it... I even found some hair spread... The breakfast was expensive, but this pushed me to go and buy traditional French products from boulangerie, charcuterie and also from supermarket, so it was fine. The braserie was closed but there is a good restaurant nearby where you can go for dinner and eat pizza or grill with very good French fries. Some of the staff not particularly kind, I would say rather bored. They could do more, considering that it is a historic hotel (former name - "Golden sun", Balzac used to stay in), close to Vernon's own attractions: for example, you can visit the wonderful cathedral, the town museum (they were hosting an attractive Blanche Hoschede exhibition) and cross the Clemenceau bridge to see the Old Mill, so beuatifully painted by Monet.

Our first impressions of this hotel weren't great. We arrived a couple of hours before check in to be told "But check in isn't until 4pm" rather than "but feel free to leave your luggage whilst you get lunch". Anyway, it turned out two rooms were ready after all... although ours didn't have any toiletries and only one towel for two people... perhaps not so ready after all. Our room was also on the third floor in the eaves so it was dark and dingy - avoid this floor if you can. Like another reviewer below, we were a bit annoyed that we hadn't been told the bar and restaurant were closed for summer. I know this is fairly normal in France but perhaps the prices should be lowered when the amount of facilities are. We were in Vernon for a wedding but when asking for an iron we were just told "no iron". How they manage to get their bed sheets so beautifully ironed is beyond me. On that note, the beds were very comfy and the room was clean. Service could definitely be improved upon though and we won't be rushing back.

Like other reviewers we chose this hotel as part of a visit to Monet's garden in nearby Giverny. We parked in the ample adjoining public car park rather than pay extra for the on site parking. On arrival we found that the hotel restaurant and bar was closed. Whilst this may only be a seasonal thing it would have been good to know beforehand. This became even more annoying when it turned out that Monday was everything closed day in Vernon. It took quite a search to find any sort of restaurant open in the town. The room itself was was comfortable enough for the price. We declined the expensive breakfast and went to the nearby supermarket cafe for a more reasonable offer.

Room Tip: Ask if the restaurant and bar will be open, especially on a Monday.

I stayed here as part of a pre arranged group visiting the Loire. It is clearly an old hotel that is being spruced up. My room was extremely clean and comfortable - albeit the lack of air con on a warm night was not ideal....so the windows needed to be open to stay cool. The staff were mostly all on holiday - so no bar or restaurant service the one night we were there....although breakfast was provided in the usual French style, and was nice enough. The town itself is pretty to walk around - and the real bonus is that it is 10mins drive from Monet's garden....allowing very early access to miss the crowds!! Was worth it just for that!!
