“Dissapointed with annex rooms!”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

We had the most fantastic meal with friends in the hotels Michelin starred restaurant. This could not be faulted in any way. However, we were very dissapointed to be staying in the annex rooms in another street. We were made fully aware when booking that we would be in a the annex, which is fine, but the standard of the annex rooms were extremely disappointing. They did not reflect in any way at all the photos shown on the hotel website of the main hotel bedrooms. It should be made very plain to all booking the annex that the standard of the rooms are very poor and well below average. In need of a total revamp. Would certainly not stay in the annex again.

We first stayed at this hotel about 20years ago when the present proprietor's father was still in charge. It was then a simple but excellent place to stay overnight. Now with its two Michelin stars the restaurant is outstanding. The bedrooms are very comfortable and beautifully appointed. Arbois is a bustling small town with excellent opportunities to sample the region's unusual wines and a range of specialist food shops to visit.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the road are especially quiet.

We have been looking forward to go back to this place we really enjoy 10 years ago and I must say we have been VERY disappointed. We took the grand tasting menu. It seems JP Jeunet is under the Alleno look a like trend. All the dishes look the same : doll portions, everything is smaller than small, sauces are just spots you cannot taste, foam "écume" on each dish, a crispy leaf, micro flowers, micro cubes on every plate ... It does not taste much as it's hard to have enough in a mouthful to taste really. Other disappointment, we went in July, and except for a good tasting of tomatoes, all the veggies where winter vegetables : I am sorry but I don't want to have parsnip or salsify in July !. Service is good everyone is nice except the sommelier very condescending and generally umpleasant. I think JP Jeunet talent is existing, he should just go back to the cuisine he does and forget the yuppies' trend.

This was a stopover hotel on our way to Provence and what a wonderful start it provided. We booked a standard room which was located in the main hotel, maybe it did not have views but it was quiet, clean and had everything we needed, including waking up to the smell of fresh baking in the morning.

We had made a reservation for the restaurant and were glad we did. Jean Paul certainly challenges your palette with great dishes. In fact we have never eaten mackerel that soft! The staff were great in explaining the dishes in English. All in all a wonderful meal, reflecting the great passion that Jean Paul has for cooking.

The only comment would be perhaps breakfast was expensive for what you got, especially as there are several boulangeries (one next door) in Arbois.

Go and stay at Jean Paul’s, it’s not the cheapest but it’s certainly excellent.

As usual we were warmly welcomed by the staff including Monsieur et Madame Jeunet and were looked after very well. Some new staff since we last visited 4 years ago but have been well trained. Our Saturday night dinner was excellent Poulette de Bresse avec Vin jaune magnifique! We did miss Stephane, the original sommelier, but the new man gave us good advice and will prove to be a good addition to the team I am sure. Madame Jeunet excellent at keeping a watchful eye on every one at dinner without being obtrusive, proper french dining.

Room Tip: A fairly quiet town so all rooms are good. Ours overlooking the main street recently refurbished ab...

My wife and I stayed 1 night at the Jean Paul Jeunet Hotel and ate in the 2-starred restaurant. We pre booked a suite that was 200m from the main hotel, not a problem really, but considering it was -10 degrees that day we didn't fancy walking back after our meal. Also the rooms that are not connected to the main part of the hotel do not benefit from WiFi, and we find it really difficult to function without it. We therefore requested a room in the main hotel, fortunately they had a room left. A well-appointed room on the second floor with a hallway with canapé and a very comfortable bed.
We had only to saunter down to the restaurant that evening. We chose the tasting menu (140E/person I think); we found both the food to be of excellent quality, very good presentation, with well-combined flavours. The waiting staff was very efficient and friendly; we have the advantage of both speaking French fluently, making the evening a wonderful experience. Would eat there again.

A very average overpriced meal. We had the two recommended dishes, lobster and chicken with vin jaune. Very average. The wine waiter was fat, sweaty and not good on recommending wine. The room was OK.
Worse, my expensive car got damaged during the stay. The hotel offer secure parking. We gave the keys in good faith to the reception. The next morning the car was parked in the street outside the hotel.
