The Castle is only open from Tue-Saturday from 2.00 pm- 6.00 pm. We were there on sunday and it was closed so we took some picture of this beautiful building and walked around in the castle area. One thing very interesting is the cows, muscled cows Some of the cows has scars on their left body.

Worth a detour from Bruges. Willow framed gardens and lake set off this 19th century castle styled family home, now preserved for visitors. Admire the gold decorated ceiling in the entrance hall, the oak carved balustrade and the stuffed bear, standing tall. Stained glass, tiled fireplaces and family photos draw the visitors. A relatively small but atmospheric home. Look up at the family chapel on the first floor. No tourist gimmicks or cafe, just a few leaflets and smiles all round.

This is not really a castle but more a posh house but if you are in the area and the timing ties in with the limited opening then it is well worth a visit. We were able to compare the furnishings etc with English National Trust houses and realise the differences.

If you are visiting Brugge it is certainly worthwhile to stop over at this place. A magnificent neo gothic castle, well kept with a nice art collection. It is also an important place in the war history of belgium. There are good explanations about its role in history. For me is was really a gem of a place.

We were on our way from Calais to Germany through Belgium and our SatNav when we asked about attractions near the motorway suggested Loppem Castle - it was BEAUTIFUL: calm, grassy, pretty building, bilingual signs about the history of the building, war time history interest loos to relieve oneself and benches to sit on while eating. What a gem!
