We picked this hotel because of its location, just over the border from France meaning 40 minutes to the ferry, one row back from lovely promenade and beach and close to a good range of eateries and the coastal tram. The hotel itself exudes old world charm, don't expect modern decor. To illustrate: the cutlery is all silver plate/chrome with the hotel name embossed, even the doormats have hotel emblems on them, the breakfast room is woodpannelled with art nuveau fittings.I imagine it looked much the same during WW2 and before. This is not a criticism, in the day of hotel chains it was delightful. The rooms are a good size with a king sized bed (twins pushed together) and the ensuites were spotless with modern fittings. The owner was delightful, always helpful. Some things a little odd for me, all the floors are lino with no rugs or carpets, eggs at breakfast are 'do it yourself' so beware picking one up thinking it is hard boiled as it could turn messy. We only had breakfast which was excellent continental with really good bread and croisants from the bakery next door.We had a really good excursion to Ostend on the Tram which is picked up about 100 yrds down the road.De panne is also good for access to Ypres for the Last post ceremony and battlefields tours. Try to catch some of the small villages inland as they are really interesting, particularly on a 'feast' day.We blundered into one quite by chance and stayed and hour or more viewing the vintage tractor competition set up in the main street. The Atlantic Wall Museum just out of Ostend is worth a visit but allow at least half a day and beware if you are not good on steps as there are hundreds of them. It is not well advertised or signposted but you can access it from the tram stop and a short climb up steps up and over the dunes(300 yds). Do not be persuaded to do the 'flat access' route as suggested to us by the torist information in Ostend as it is well over a mile each way and you never think you are going to get there.

Room Tip: Rooms at the from have JUliet balconies and are a little larger but you might be disturbed by the (l...

Stayed here again at the weekend and and once again were not disappointed , this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. We had a different room this time and it was lovely. The decor is amazing ,a lot of thought has gone into this hotel ,even the choice of breakfast is immense, and the hot chocolate is to die for. This hotel is a must and is in a great situation in De Panne
And last but not least the young lady who runs this hotel is very helpful and friendly

We searched TA for a hotel just over the Belgian border. Chose the Royal Hotel and were not disappointed. The hotelier was delightful. We were given advice on parking on the street but chose to park in the private parking garage. Space might be limited so check with the hotel and book it if you can.

The room was spacious and perfectly clean. Breakfast was of good quality and plentiful in the European style.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Take a torch if you use the garage service

Amazed that this is rated 2/14 hotels in De Panne by Tripadvisor - can't imagine what the others are like...
Stayed one night before returning to the U.K. from Italy. Booked "premium" rooms through booking.com specifically requesting one room with twin beds which we did not get (my 21 yr old son and his 16 yr old sister had to share a double bed - not ideal). Their room at the top of the hotel (315 I think) was spacious with a balcony over the main street, a kingsize bed and a good bathroom. My partner and I were two floors below (good thing we didn't have young children) in a very small, cramped, room overlooking a roof, with a queen-sized double bed and 2 long dark hairs on my pillow (I am blond!). Though the hotel is reasonable value for money, I was surprised that both "premium" rooms cost the same! Thought the Nespresso coffee maching in our childrens' room was a nice touch, until we realised they would charge us €2 per coffee capsule (these cost 23p when I buy them!)
To get the these premium rooms you pass into a "posh" bit of the corridor with light walls and carpet - the rest of the corridors are grim: dark, dingy, lino and smelling of disinfectant - felt (and smelled) like a hospital. Nice breakfast in very old-fashioned dining room. Staff seemed under pressure and not particularly pleased to see us - got the impression that at this time of year majority of guests were Belgian holiday makers there for the week. Did not appreciate the hotel charging my credit card the evening we arrived before I had even seen the bill and without my agreement. This is not the way a hotel should behave.

Good service, good breakfast, excellent location. Must have been a great place... 60 years ago. Our room was rather small with an unconfortable bed. For 100 euro/night, internet should be complementary. But overall: ok.

We had an unfortunate event that our rooms were bought over with a supposed "needier" family. However, I am very glad it happened because we ended up getting a better room! The lady was very nice and let us park in the garage. We only had to walk a few meters before we saw the supermarket. Everything is in walking distance which is wonderful! We had a complimentary breakfast (due to the first sentence above) which was wonderful! Oh the splendour of it all! There were fresh baguettes, hot cocoa, coffee, tea, eggs, assorted meats, bagels, cheeses, yougurts, jams, tarts, and many more! The service was the best I have seen in a long time. Although there was only one lady at the front desk, she was extremely helpful and very nice. Each room had a coffee machine along with a restroom with heated towel bars (so nice) and very nice shampoos, face washes, hand soaps, and body lotions. And they were all so dainty! A very nice television in each room as well! We will definitely recommend this to anyone. It is a must!

Room Tip: Higher floors are more luxurious, but all and all, any room is wonderful! Make sure you try the brea...
