“Thank Norbert! You truly made our vacation thst much better. Date of visit: October 2007”
Reviewed March 25, 2013 via mobile

We visited the Ardennes in October 2007. We drove in from Paris for a week long adventure with our bicycles to do some riding. Due to the unforseen we did not get out of CDG till quite late then got lost in Champagne/Ardennes. Poor us.... This in turn landed us in the middle of the town of Waimes and not able to checkin till the next day at our villa. A local merchant called ahead to the Butgenbacher to secure if they were still open and had space.

Norbert was the kind gent who greeted us and secured our bicycles at the Butgenbacher Hof. Norbert held the doors open for us and got us settled in our rooms. The next surprise it was his birthday and invited us to his party at the local pub. We had a blast!

Thank you Norbert. After all these years we still remember your kindness. We are so grateful for the memories.

About the hotel:
The customer service truly made this stay memorable. Remember our stay took place in 2007. At that time thehotel needed a little freshening up. But the breakfast which was included and the outstanding customer service more than made up.

Another great memory of our stay.....While sitting down jto breakfast the locsl pony club gathered in the open area the restaurant overlooked. Being lof the horsey folk in my years past loved it. I saw wee little kids on their wee ponies. The big kids on warmbloods and warmblood crosses.

I am not one to repeat destinations. I want to go back.

We enjoyed a great arrangement of 3 days (2 nights) at the Butgenbacher-Hof. Very well positioned for great walks around the lake of Butgenbach (5min walk from the hotel) or the very nice woods of Elsenborn and Eifel. Great food, the restaurant only needs a new look because it doensn't correspond anymore with the very nice and modern rooms and the extremely well equiped wellness-center with indoor pool, sauna's, hammam, fitness center, beauty center and so on. If you want to give your spouse a well deserved present, choose for this environment!!

Room Tip: Try to book a room in the front building; they are newly refurbished.

We spent one night in a family room, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The village is delightful to explore, but the real gem is the service and food in this hotel. The room was spacious and well equipped, the pool and spa is excellent, and the restaurant was perfect. We would have like to stay longer, and will definitely go back!

On a lovely autumn weekend recently, we were looking for somewhere nice to stay in the east of Belgium, and, following the advice of other TripAdvisor contributors, we chose this hotel. We enjoyed our first night's stay, and added a second night.

We liked our room, at the front of the hotel, 1st floor, and very quiet; and although for some reason I did not sleep well (rather heavy duvet?), my husband did. We took the table d'hôte menu for dinner on both days, which was well prepared and interesting; however, being no longer young, we would have preferred a rather lighter meal. There is an excellent choice of wines.

The swimming pool was pleasant: a bit small for serious swimming, but it had comfortable lounging space and a good sauna.

The area is lovely and really worth a visit, in whatever season (cross-country skiing in winter, and fine walks in the Fagnes not far away; interesting small towns to visit). The autumn season is particularly interesting.

This is not a 4* hotel : the beds were VERY hard, the bathroom was very old and the towels were worn out.The restaurant was not bad but not gastronomic.Breukfast was OK.The hotel belongs to the "Relais du silence",but was in the middle of the town and not silent at all.
The only thing that deserve 4 stars is the pool .
