“An Absolute Delight”
Reviewed August 25, 2010

We stayed one night in this hotel. We should have stayed a week. This hotel shows that the vision of a man and his wife to create an interesting, unusual and quite delightful hotel. Superb restaurant, beautiful food, incredible conservatory. Peaceful location. Find a reason to visit this part of Europe, and then book this hotel. Very hard to fault.

The hotel is located in a very beautiful area of Belgium (very green, lots of woods and lakes and fantastic scenery). The hotel was built in a secluded area, meaning that there's at least a five min drive to the nearest village. Therefore, one can firmly say that the hotel is located in the heart of nature. There's a nice wood nearby and the hotel is overlooking a beautiful lake and a vast grass field. There's a nice terrace at the hotel and all rooms (there's 12 in total) have fantastic views on the lake. The hotel has a nice terrace (view on the lake), a nice green house with exotic plants and a pond (breakfast is served there), and a restaurant. The room was big, large window and a nice double bed. On the down-side, the fridge was making noise all night long. But the wonderful view from the window in the morning, which included a pair of hourses running in the green, compensated for that :-)

I must say we were a bit surprised to find out that lunch and dinner were served between fixed hours. We arrived around 13.30 and we were told that it was too late to order anything, not even a snack. The owner 'kindly' advised us to drive all the way back to the high street and eat in a restaurant along the road. Since the hotel is run by a couple and there's visibly no one else to help them out, I had to wait half an hour before I could locate the owner and ask him for a coffee. Dinner was marvelous. The owner's wife was cooking herself and I must say it was absolutely delicious (haute cuisine, mostly French, very nice choice of wines and a la carte dishes). The atmosphere in the restaurant was also excellent, nice setting and all that. What reaally bothered us was the absolute slow service. From the moment we arrived until the moment we got our main dish (no entres) we waited exactly 1 hour 45 mins. And the restaurant was not full (around 15-20 people in all, not all arriving at the same time). It was really irritating. The owner himself was serving food and drinks and honestly it took forever!!!! I personally found this uterly irritating.

Overall we had a nice stay, as mentioned above, the hotel and the location and the food were excellent. The peculiar sense of humour of the owner ("And what if I don't want to serve you coffee?" with a serious face, but joking) and the absolutely slow speed of doing things must be noted though. A week end is perhaps the perfect duration for a stay there, a week would have been too long (but perhaps one gets used to the rythm eventually).
