“Good facilities, shame about the cottage”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2007

This was our first stay at Centerparcs in the UK or Europe so we didn't really know what to expect. It was significantly cheaper than it would have been in the UK at the same time. We went as a family with children aged 7 and 5.

There were a lot of positives about the place - the swimming pool complex was very good overall with a large warm pool, a separate children's pool, jacussis and lots of water slides (although these could get a bit scary for small children when much bigger children were rushing past). It was sometimes a problem though finding a free changing space and when you did it was very cramped with children. The discovery centre with the pirate ship and indoor beach was also very good.

We'd booked the half board so it was breakfast and dinner at the market restaurant. This proved to be generally very good - self service, as much as you could eat with lots of choice of food at a high standard. Sometimes it could get a bit busy and there were delays in taking drinks orders and clearing plates away.

The park is very big and too far for small children to walk everywhere so we had to hire bicycles which were reasonalbly priced. We also hired out canoes and a pedalo on the lake and played badminton (in the evening if you take your own equipment the nets are left up and you can play for free).

The childrens entertainment was also good - free afternoon shows, bedtime stores and discos. There was a good supermarket which we used for drinks/snacks which was reasonably priced.

Now the bad points, there were two main ones - the weather was awful (but not their fault, just bad luck!) and the cottage...
Even though we had booked 3 months in advance the only accomodation available was a 3 bedroom economy cottage. This proved to be absolutely awful - terrible smell (definitely smoke, probably other things as well), not very clean, very poor worn out furniture and fittings, uncomfortable beds and no bed linen (had to hire this separately - not made clear at time of booking). We stayed with some friends who had a 2 bed deluxe cottage and that was a lot better and well worth the extra cost - we spent most evenings there.

So overall it was an enjoyable stay, it was fairly good value for money and the location was lovely but we would only go back if we could get a deluxe or better cottage. AVOID the economy cottages and cross fingers for some sun!!

We booked a few weeks prior to travelling direct with Center Parcs online. Got a good deal, 4 nights in a deluxe villa for 2 ads & 2 chd. 500 euros. 3 hour easy journey from Calais (we took the car). Our villa was clean, but for a deluxe nothing really special. Laminate flooring in main areas, carpet in bedrooms (needed a good clean though) and mould on bedroom walls.
Very limited space in kitchen area, with no storage for any food that you bring or buy? They don't have ovens in the kitchens either, bit of a ploy to make you eat out I expect!!

Main market dome is home to everything. It was clean and smoke free. Restaurants were ok, normal fast food places and then sit down or buffet restaurants. Prices were ok, but thought buffet was pricey. 24 euros per adult and 15 euros for kids. Different theme each night.

Sports Hall is housed in the main dome, and is on the small side. Nothing like those here in CP UK. Reasonable rates for sporting activities though. We paid 12 euros per hour for tennis, 18 euros for an hour's bowling, 4 euros for inline skating for the kids or skateboarding.

Spent most of our time leisurely riding our bikes or in the pool. Fab swimming. Great pool with waves occassionally, lazy river, tobaggon slide, 2 fun slides and fun rapids. Bit of a free for all in the rapids and can become very crushed in places, but our kids loved it. Changing rooms were always busy, and not always very clean.

One day we rode out into the local village Lommel. It is a nice safe and easy cycle, you pass some beautiful homes too. Town has lots of shops, and we found a great place to eat. Koffee Korner, does the most fantastic pancakes. We were so impressed with the menu, that we went back for dinner that night (we drove down). Had the burgers which were HUGE and our bill was minimal. Really impressed.

CP offers loads to do, and it is a good family bonding place. From this park where we spent 5 days we then travelled onto De Kempervennen over the border in Holland. 20 minute drive away.
Will write a report on that too.
Would I return to De Vossemeren .... yes we would.

We have been going to Centreparcs now for over 10 years in the UK at the different sites and usually go to Sherwood every September as a group of 20-30 people all mixed ages.

I moved to Leuven in Belgium to work in October 2006 and my wife and daughter (4 yrs) still live in Derby (for now) so we wanted a half term holiday with something we knew so we could spend alot of time together, but with something a bit different.

So, Centreparcs in Belgium or Holland was decided and i managed to book on the Centerparcs site for De Vossemeren (an hour from my apartment) with a fairly big discount compared to the UK sites (half term here is a week later than the UK) so it worked out about half the price for a midweek break than in the UK.

If you travel from the UK, I would recommend Norfolk Line ferries from Dover to Dunkerque (i travel to UK every 2 weeks and find them the most cost effective and pretty decent to travel with).

The week was good, weather could have been better, but my daughter loved it - the The Pirate discovery ship was good and i did have fun scaling the rope bridges and ladders as much as my daughter did. The Swimming dome was clean and popular and activities were good, we enjoyed the bowling alley and the kiddy play zone with an indoor kart track, foam fire cannons, skateboard ramps and the usual tennis and squash courts.

In the swimming dome there are the usual slides and rapids rides (rapids were not too fast and our 4yr old was allowed down them) - they also have an outdoor snorkelling section where you can use a free snorkel mask and look at the fish and sharks behind glass underwater).

They have a childrens farm which my daughter loved, petting the goats, sheep, rabbits and donkey and she also had a pony ride for 2€ which lasted about 10 mins.

We had a 2 bedroom VIP Cottage which was good (complete with Sauna and shower-room), but we did find it a little strange that there was no oven (but you can hire stone grills, or fondue sets complete with food from the supermarket, wines, cooking equipment etx ... we did this once and it was great fun and not too pricey).

Being in the VIP we got bread rolls delivered each morning to the Villa (a mix of white brown and crossiants) we got 5 rolls and 4 crossiants every day and also used these for a picnic to take to the swimming dome twice. We also got a free daily newspaper and they have the sun, times, mirror or mail for UK papers delivered daily in the shop.

We ate out twice and found them both to be pretty good, i have adapted to the continental style of not being rushed and for me service wasnt an issue, food was ok, but i do agree with previous comment about chips with everything (but again, that, along with mashed potato, is standard here in Belgium and Holland).

There was a buffet restuarant which had a good choice of foods and salads and had theme nights like Italian and Chinese.

ALL food and drinks were cheaper than UK Centreparcs and for children, once you buy a kids drink, you get your own special kiddy cup which entitles you to refills throughout the week at only 1€ (68p) for coke, lemonade or whatever.

We ate burger and chips for 3 in the swimming dome one lunchtime with a can of beer (coke for my daughter) and it came to 15€ which is not far off your usual mcdonalds prices on the high street.

The pancake house was good - my daughter had a great time with a chocolate, ice cream and cream pancake (most of it went on her face instead of in her mouth). But the service was slow in here (even by European standards).

Everyone spoke English if required -so no language barriers. staff wear a name badge with country flags indicating what language they spoke.

Overall very good value - and now we will be going to the other Europe parcs rather than the UK ones (well, apart from this September).

This was our first stay at Center Parcs. Went with 2 kids (6&1). We had originally intended to go to one in the UK, however, going to this one in Belgium (during Half-Term week) was about 40% of the cost. We travelled on Norfolk Lines Ferry for £50 return. Drive took about 3 hours from Dunkerque to de Vossemeren.

Great week. Kids loved it. Loads to do. The Pirate discovery centre and the Swimming dome very popular. Biked everywhere. Cottage was fairly basic but clean and cheerful inside.

Catering-wise was a bit of a disappointment. The restaurants were under-staffed, so service not great, and took a bit of time to get drinks/clean table etc. Also the food a bit basic generally, and pretty much geared to chips with everything. That said the Market buffet had a reasonable salad choice. Best restaurant was Hammonds, however with kids the market-buffet is the best bet for quick dinner, as it's help yourself. (c.€21 head for dinner per adult, and €7.50 for kids). Drinks cheap by UK standards.

Everyone spoke English if required -so no language barriers. Baby-sitting was cheap at €4.50 hour and easy to book.

Overall very good value - though I would resent paying more than double to do the same in the UK!
