“Nice Staff & Rooms”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Nice sized rooms with a big comfortable king size bed and clean bathroom also. The staff were helpful with questions and allowed us to keep our bikes locked in a property they owned accross the road. The air conditioning unit, sadly was very noisy, but we did have a sky light so we still kept relatively cool at night. If we was staying longer than a night we would of asked to have had this fixed. The breakfast was ok and what you come to expect in most european hotels.

We stayed at this hotel n the way to Geel. We had a bear of a travel day so decided to stop before our final destination. The hotel is right at the train station, like we walked off the platform and pretty much into the lobby. Very handy. The lobby is a bit like a bed and breakfast, cozy and small. Check in was easy and the staff very friendly. Our room was on the ground floor facing the street. The room was clean and very romantic with large windows and a door out to a sitting area. The room included a welcome mini bottle of wine (red and white), 2 cans of sparkling water as well as candies galore! A lovely breakfast was included which was very convienient. This hotel is a wonderful choice if your travels take you through Turnhout.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the ground floor street rooms. Very cute!

This hotel is located fairly centrally and has reasonable access to the main roads in/out of Turnhout, it’s also right next to the station and a main bus terminus, so getting around it fairly easy.

Check-in was quick and efficient and they handed over a 10% discount voucher for the Japanese restaurant located next door. The room was on the ground floor overlooking the rear of the hotel. The view isn’t spectacular – you have a good clear view of the train tracks that are 10m of so away, apart from when the buses are passing along the bus lane that is about 1m from the window! This means there’s a reasonable amount of traffic noise throughout the night, so if you’re a light sleeper you could have problems. Rooms at the front of the hotel are apparently quieter, but you’ll still get some noise form the road outside.

The hotel advertised free parking, and there is some available, but it’s not the spaces immediately outside the entrance. These are public parking and cost €1.20 per hour (max 2hrs) between 9:00-18:00. Tickets have to be purchased from a pay & display machine that only accepts coins, so if your bringing a car make sure you have some small change with you. Outside that time they are free, but fill up quickly. When checking in, the receptionist mentioned that I’d need to pay as they were quite keen on checking for tickets given how close the slots are to the station. Apparently, there is completely free parking available behind the hotel, it isn’t obviously signposted, and they didn’t mention when checking in – I found that nugget in the visitor info pack in the room.

The room was nice and clean and had a reasonable amount of space. The bed was comfortable and the desk a decent size. Internet access was free, both wifi and wired, and was fast enough to stream stuff and maintain a vpn. The only downside was only a single socket being available for use. This was located right next to the door, so to power the laptop, the cable has to train right across the door, likewise, of you wanted to use the complimentary tea/coffee, you had to move the kettle from the desk and rest it on the suitcase stand next to the socket. Flat screen TV was on the wall above the desk and large enough to watch from the bed on the other side of the room. If you need to use a PC and don’t have one, then there is one located in the upstairs foyer, but there is no printer attached, which limits its usefulness.

The desk also contains a small safe, but it was already locked so not actually any use. The visitor info pack also mentions there being a laptop safe located in the wardrobe –only there wasn’t. Housekeeping seems to be a bit chaotic, with the vacuum cleaner seeming to run at completely random times, be it 7am or 10pm. They also didn’t clean the room one day which wasn’t too great an issue as I hadn’t made much of a mess, but could get annoying if it went on for more than one day.

Bathroom is more of a wet room that traditional bathroom, with the shower in the corner of the room not having any screens around it. Unfortunately, the size/slope of the shower isn’t sufficient to keep the water in the shower area and it creeps out onto the marble floor making it extremely slippery. Lighting isn’t brilliant, with just 3 spotlights over the sink being the only illumination in the room.

Breakfast is reasonable with a small cooked selection, cereals, pastries and typical continental cold cuts and cheese selection. There is also a table with tea/coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice making facilities. Tables are a little small, but it was never overly cramped or busy in the time I was there.

If you’re on the ground floor then it’s worth knowing the hotel has a ‘minibar’ that consists of a fridge in the corridor that has wine/beers located in it. People make use of this throughout the night, so there always seems to be noise in the corridor. If you wanting a bite to eat then there is a Japanese restaurant next door, but within a 15 min walk there is plenty more variety available on the roads that lead towards the town square.

Overall, the hotel is in a good central location and does the basics reasonable well, but the noise from the myriad of transport forms that surround it detracts from it somewhat. Rooms on the upper floor overlooking the front of the hotel would probably be preferable, but if you can tolerate the noise then any room would be comfortable and clean – providing the housekeeping can keep up.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the top floor overlooking the front of the hotel

I have stayed at several Best Westerns in my travels and this may be the best one of the lot. BWs are variable and you never know what you will get. Some are better than others and this one was quite good. The location is very convenient for me as it is near a major client of ours. But it is also convenient in general as it is literally beside the train station. It was also convenient walking distance (less than a km) to the city center where the better food options are located. It had snowed the day of my arrival and the walks were not adequately cleared. Nonetheless, the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. There was no problem whatsoever using English for communication. The check-in was quick and efficient. When I set out to find my room, I was a bit alarmed as the hallway was dark. The light worked on a sensor so the hall did light up fairly quickly. I must say, however, that there were times when I stepped out into the hallway and found it pitch dark for a second or two before the sensor kicked in. I thought the decor in the hallway was interesting with tables and adornments down the entire length. It was a nice touch. The room was clean and reasonably spacious with low windows as well as a sky window that served as a convenient night light. The oddity was that there was no soap in the room that I could find so I had to use the bath gel. But I got by. The nice touch was the fact that there were free goodies waiting for me in the room including red and white wine, two cans of sparkling water and a couple of chocolates. Coffee was also available. I did not take advantage of the wines but the other items were replenshed each day. Everything in the room was in working order. The WiFi functioned without any problems throughout my two-day stay and it was FREE! The bed was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep both nights in spite of just arriving from the US. The only small complaint was that I was on the side of the building facing the railway station and I heard the trains a couple of times during the night. I would ask for a room on the street side if I stayed again. The morning breakfast was better than I expected. The atmosphere of the breakfast room was warm and friendly. There were some hot dishes, deli meats and cheeses, cereals, yogurt, breads, juices, coffee, tea and more. The room rate was very fair, even a bargain, for the experience I received. If you have need for a hotel in Turnhout, this is a great choice.

I cannot understand why people rate this hotel. What have they stopped in before visiting here? For a supposed 4* hotel it lacks a lot. It may well be the best hotel in Turnhout but that cannot say a lot about the rest. The four night stay here was dogged by problem after problem. I felt sorry for the staff who were polite and attentive but lacked the ability to solve problems I suspect due to lack of investment by the owner or owning group. Never once were we offered the Manager. So what were the problems? Weird room layout with floor level half windows offering no privacy without shutting the heavy (dirty) curtains. Road or railway noise - take your choice. tired room furnishings with uncomfortable bed. One towel left on two days for two persons. Analogue TV in 2012!! No English channels? Shower so datd with leaks. Breakfast extensive but really poor quality and everyone squeezed together. The hot food was poor quality and cold. Beware the corridors in the dark. Noise in the middle of the night from staff performing overnight chores! I could go on, but actually there was nothing good about this hotel. If you have a choice go for some of the independent bed and breakfast around the area.

Room Tip: Choice is simple you take railway noise or road and public noise

We spent one night here because it was close to a concert we came to town to see. I called a few hotels in Turnhout before my trip and the woman I dealt with (Suzanne) was just wonderful. We came in by train and voila...the hotel is right there at the station. Couldn't have been easier. Front desk staff was wonderful! We had to take an early train out the next morning and the front desk staff said they would have breakfast ready early (which they did!). Our room was tiny, but adequate. Our bathroom was clean and modern. The pillows were impossibly overstuffed and uncomfortable. The included breakfast was by far the best and most varied breakfast of any hotel I've ever stayed at in Europe. The front desk staff were as wonderful as anyone could ask for.

Room Tip: Our window overlooked the train, and yet our room was super quiet.
