The success of Hallstatt as a tourist destination only highlights the failure of Germany's tourism marketing. Hallstatt offers a typical view around the Bavarian alps and lakes, plus various tourists traps. A side note, get informed about the weather before visit. Rainy days will more likely ruin your photo ops in Hallstatt.

For those blown away by this over-hyped town, any anonymous town in Southern Germany would suffice. For those looking for magnificent views and fun recreations, Zugspitze and Eibsee or Königssee at the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden will redefine your perception of natural wonders.

That said, Dachstein - Salzkammergut is fantastic! The official guide is not only complimentary but also informatively accommodating! Don’t miss out the ice cave (Eishöhle) for a surreal walk on the thin ice. If you come in September, there will be concerts held inside of the ice cave. Swing at the "concert hall" inside of the Eishöhle is out of this world, literally and figuratively!

A weekend trip here is highly recommended! You can take your time to explore the caves, enjoy the hikes overlooking the area and take in the spectacular views from the five fingers (free viewing platform on the Krippenstein) or from skydiving.

In Hallstatt village there is the mining museum this is a great day out for the whole family, very informative and great fun. Good restrurants at the muesum. Easy to get to there is a train from bad ischel to Hallstatt.
Ice caves are found in obertraun, to get here the train leaves bad ischel to obertraun, then outside train station at obertraun there is a bus which takes you to the ice caves.
Here there is a cable car to the first level you then walk up 600m to the ice cave, they are fab very interesting, after which there is the mamouth cave to explore. Then there is the second cable car to the top of the mountain and if you are lucky there may be snow! Good warm clothing is needed and sturdy walking boots. Good restaurant at the first cable car station.

Tour of the salt mines was tiring but worth every ache in my body. We had to climb up to the entrance on a mostly paved path only to enter some exhausting steps. But the walk was worth it.

The entire area is stunning beautiful. If you enjoy hiking, nothing quite beats the feeling you get as you reach a mountain top and take in the magnificent sights.
One of the major attractions here is the dachstein caves and the five fingers viewing platform accessible by cable car.
The ice cave was magnificent and definitely worth visiting. The tour guide was very informative and as you get to know more about the caves, you'll be even more astounded as you here about how deep the ice is and witness the frozen waterfall.
The mammoth cave while interesting was not anywhere near as good as the ice cave and if you're short on time, then you can give this one a skip. The tour guide we got for this was also particularly poor as she would not speak English since there 'wasn't enough English speaking people in our group'.
My recommendation however if you enjoy hiking is to to the hike all the way up to the top as you will not regret it. I do caution that this is only for the physically fit with experience as the ascent is 1500m. You'll need to start very early in the morning, especially if you want to visit the ice and mammoth caves. One thing to consider is to book accommodation at the lodge at the top of the mountain, especially as you want to be at the top during the sunset. If you enjoy photography, you will not regret staying until sunset as you can take some amazingly beautiful pictures. If you're feeling adventurous enough, then you can hike back down in the darkness but I do not recommend taking the shortest route back to Obertraun which is a ski slope as it is incredibly steep and very dangerous to hike on.

It was a must do in Austria. We were thrilled to see the Hallstatter Glacier. The cable car has three stops, shops, restaurants, hiking trails if you so desire. Just take in the amazing views of the mountains and Glacier. Watching the hang gliders plunge off the mountain over the lake. So glad we did not miss this . the views were never ending. A real treat.
