Wonderful place to stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 13, 2015
My partner and I were travelling through Austria this summer and looking for a place to stay in a rural setting where we could hike. Häuserl im Wald delivered and especially Margaret and her family & staff made it a wonderful experience for us. The rooms are spacious, modern and clean with plenty of storage room for our gear and place to relax. The pool was wonderful and the food especially was a treat. Dinners there were excellent and the breakfast was the best buffet we've had so far in our travels. The staff was skilled and attentive and we felt totally taken care of, from decaf coffee in the AM to suggestions for hiking itineraries.

Another very happy stay at this lovely country hotel in such a peaceful setting but still within easy reach of the ski slopes. The host family Langanger, who have owned and run it for many years, were as charming and efficient as always. The food menu offers mostly regional and national cuisine, fresh local produce is clearly used where possible, and I was more impressed than ever by its quality.

Room tip: Mountain views from both front and rear facing rooms. East facing so rooms at the front get the morning sun.

Just returned from another stay on beautiful Mitterberg. The hotel is surrounded by mountains, an idyllic setting ideal for those looking for peace and relaxation. In keeping with much of Austria, the hotel is very clean, comfortable and has a friendly family atmosphere. The rooms are spacious and the food of good regional cuisine quality. And there is now a small wine bar in the basement where you can sample different Austrian wines under the expert guidance of Christian, the owners son. I always return home with happy memories and looking forward to the next visit.

I have been coming to this hotel over the past 10 years. It is a fantastic family run place in a quiet hamlet offering splendid views of the gorgeous countryside, mountains and forests, yet very close to the ski resorts in the Enns valley. Only 1.5 h from Salzburg, and an easy drive, the hotel is close to various year-round activities such as rock climbing, hiking, golf, zip wires, horse riding and skiing. Opt for the half board as the dinner is very generous and expertly cooked and served and always imaginative and showcasing regional produce. The local dishes are yummy and the pumpkin soup is a (secret) family recipe. All public rooms and bedrooms are super clean and modern and there is a pool, steam room, solarium and sauna. Nothing is too much trouble for the family Langanger and entire staff are friendly and flexible. Make sure you try the outdoor ice skittle game (in winter) and sample the wine and port in the newly opened wine bar. Beware of the large variety of schnapps served until the early hours .... Best hotel in the region!

My wife and I were pleased to discover this large yet very quiet hotel outside the small town of Gröbming, Styria. We did not want to stay in town with all the hustle and bustle. Luckily for us, the hotel was quite empty, thus ensuring, a quiet night's rest. They have large conference facilities, and therefore I can not speak for the quiet when the hotel is packed with attendees.
We had a nice dinner and wholesome breakfast in the hotel and enjoyed both meals thoroughly. For anyone wanting a hotel off the beaten track, this is a perfect choice.
One criticism I have of many hotels and pensions in Austria, is that alomost no one seems to believe in mosquito-screens (bug-screens for windows) Austria's variety of mosquitoes are called "Gelsen" and they are just as annoying at night as anywhere else in the world their brethren haunt the skies. Even leaving windows closed until after all lights are extinguished is of no help.
Thus, this hotel is not alone regarding my complaint of night-time mosquito attacks.
Would I stay again? Yes, but with windows closed.

Really fantastic place - everything is really (at least) 4*. Beautifully designed, great local atmosphere, superb food (like in a 4* restaurant and not in a half pension), lots of activities in and around the hotel - everything true that is on the website; very honest and heartfelt service, very very beautiful location and views. The SOMMERCARD is such a bonus!! The best card I have so far experienced in Austria. Saved us many hundreds of Euros, on great activities like Dachstein, paragliding, all-day-childcare and great activities for them, etc.

Details: pool is as great as on photos, you swim among the mountains, heated pool, so it was dream in all weather. Location is wonderful - nested among high peaks, pastures, everything Alps. The hotel is small but still has all the services - you are not only a "room number" and there is no crowd, very personalised service. Everything is super clean and beatifully done - they pay attention to all details. Same with service - the owners themselves serve food.

Food is wonderful and really large portions - in our next hotel, for instance, the Wienerschnitzel was 1/3 the size, desserts 1/10th the size... ;-(. They are not stingy with anything; the half board includes fish several times, lamb, and other delicacies. Breakfast has a great fresh pressed "vitamin juice" that was really yummy; also sprouts and other not-so-standard hotel foods are served (like blue cheese that we loved), and all are cooked and served to a very high standard.

Activities are superb - because it is not a large hotel, you can play tabletennis for hours (in this fantastic setting), swim, playground is really good, safe, and beautiful. There are other nice things outside in the Summer like the hammock-like seat and other fun summer seating/sunbeds, beautiful huge garden. The Indoor playroom is a little more simple, but perhaps it is boosted up by the Winter, and you can still kill a few hours in it with your child. We had so much constant fun (with the Sommercard free activities) that we have not even gotten to use the spa area. I liked the Wednesday night folk dance, too.

For us what was special that it is a truly "local" hotel - everyone wears the local folk costumes, the food embraces local produce and products as well as cuisine, the whole design fits so well - so you have a full local cultural experience in addition to the nice vacation.

I also appreciated that they were very fair with the bill - in the offer they did not include a cost for our twins, and although they wanted to charge for them (not too much), when I pointed out that this was not in our offer, they returned it without any bad feelings.

Room tip: Do not be afraid of road facing rooms (from the map it seems it is a main road) - it is a rarely driven road, so there is no noise or other nuisance. The family room is a dream: 3 TVs (great with several kids of different age), 3 Toilets, 2 bathrooms, 3 balconies, a big living room, two spacious bedrooms, on two floors, so really quiet.
