I stayed here in March for a business conference - which included some skiing. I have stayed at many ski hotels across Europe and North America but on merit, I think the Krallerhof is possibly the best... closely rivalled by the Fairmont in Whistler and the Hotel Schneider in Obertauern. If the Krallerhof was at the bottom of Leogang’s main gondola, it could be the perfect ski hotel. You can ski back to the hotel though…
This a large hotel but it is cleverly laid out. The main restaurant feels like several small restaurants in one - split into separate 'rooms' - each with its own style and decor. The food is superb, as is the service. The breakfast buffet is excellent – freshly squeezed juice machines – a fabulous omelette station –one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. Aachen’s Quellenhof still retains that crown though.
The rooms are lovely - modern or traditional - take your pick. I had a traditional room which echoed 'quality' throughout. My room / suite had a separate lounge with open fire, two bedrooms, a hot tub and steam room in the bathroom and more cupboard space than we have at home!
The hotel’s facilities for the non-skier are excellent. As I could not ski, I spent a significant amount of time in the gym - there is a pulley room with extremely modern Technogym equipment and a second room with cardio machines, resistance machines and decent free weights – including an Olympic bench/squat cage. There is also a separate dance studio for classes. Outside the gym, there is a lovely chill out area, equipped with chairs, iced water, fruit bowls and a selection of nuts.
The main indoor swimming pool is amazing - deck level - nearly 25m in length. There is also a relaxation room, a clothed sauna and numerous loungers on which to chill out - looking out over the mountains. The pool air temperature is really very high though – so much so that sitting by the poolside for very long is quite uncomfortable. There is also an outside seating area overlooking the mountains – some solariums and even some squash courts!
There is also a ‘textile free’ spa area – consisting of several saunas, steam rooms and a large Jacuzzi. It’s clear that a lot of investment has gone into this area – it’s one of the nicest spa areas I have been to. Be aware though, some people in the sauna area might be naked – this is continental Europe after all.
Next to the main sauna area, there is a large beauty spa. The reception itself is something to behold – offering a range of free drinks – speciality teas – fruit and iced water. There is also a massive tropical fish tank next to the many treatment rooms. A sad admission I know, but I spent nearly half an hour here just watching the fish! All in all, a very relaxing place to visit – whether you’re skiing or not.
