Hotel Der Krallerhof
Ranked #3 of 16 Hotels in Leogang
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 19, 2012

I stayed here in March for a business conference - which included some skiing. I have stayed at many ski hotels across Europe and North America but on merit, I think the Krallerhof is possibly the best... closely rivalled by the Fairmont in Whistler and the Hotel Schneider in Obertauern. If the Krallerhof was at the bottom of Leogang’s main gondola, it could be the perfect ski hotel. You can ski back to the hotel though…

This a large hotel but it is cleverly laid out. The main restaurant feels like several small restaurants in one - split into separate 'rooms' - each with its own style and decor. The food is superb, as is the service. The breakfast buffet is excellent – freshly squeezed juice machines – a fabulous omelette station –one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. Aachen’s Quellenhof still retains that crown though.

The rooms are lovely - modern or traditional - take your pick. I had a traditional room which echoed 'quality' throughout. My room / suite had a separate lounge with open fire, two bedrooms, a hot tub and steam room in the bathroom and more cupboard space than we have at home!

The hotel’s facilities for the non-skier are excellent. As I could not ski, I spent a significant amount of time in the gym - there is a pulley room with extremely modern Technogym equipment and a second room with cardio machines, resistance machines and decent free weights – including an Olympic bench/squat cage. There is also a separate dance studio for classes. Outside the gym, there is a lovely chill out area, equipped with chairs, iced water, fruit bowls and a selection of nuts.

The main indoor swimming pool is amazing - deck level - nearly 25m in length. There is also a relaxation room, a clothed sauna and numerous loungers on which to chill out - looking out over the mountains. The pool air temperature is really very high though – so much so that sitting by the poolside for very long is quite uncomfortable. There is also an outside seating area overlooking the mountains – some solariums and even some squash courts!

There is also a ‘textile free’ spa area – consisting of several saunas, steam rooms and a large Jacuzzi. It’s clear that a lot of investment has gone into this area – it’s one of the nicest spa areas I have been to. Be aware though, some people in the sauna area might be naked – this is continental Europe after all.

Next to the main sauna area, there is a large beauty spa. The reception itself is something to behold – offering a range of free drinks – speciality teas – fruit and iced water. There is also a massive tropical fish tank next to the many treatment rooms. A sad admission I know, but I spent nearly half an hour here just watching the fish! All in all, a very relaxing place to visit – whether you’re skiing or not.

This was my first visit to the Krallerhof and it was a very good one. As part of a party of 14, 8 of which were children, there was an excellent balance between parent space and activities and family events around ski-ing.

Pros:

- excellent location in Leogang with nursery slope outside hotel
- wonderful ski run from main psite through forest bank to hotel
- food - wide and varied. Superb salad bar in the evening
- wine - excellent
- absolutely fantastic kids club and their own food should they want it in the evening
- good sk-shop facilities
- excellent spa on the whole

Cons:

- hotel is very warm - almost too warm
- junior suites are superb, but double rooms definitely more 4 star than 5 star
- unsavoury incident in pub bar amongst locals took place (very rare I am told)

All in all a very good experience and I would recommend to friends

There is no question that this is a great hotel with good service and one which I can recommend whole heatedly.

There are a couple of areas which let the hotel down a bit but they are not major weaknesses. The first is simply that the hotel is far too hot! I thought it was just me at first but my colleagues also complained as did a friend who has stayed at the hotel on another occasion. In my room it was not possible to adjust the underfloor heating and even after asking for it to be turned down it was still too hot which made it impossible to get a good night's sleep.

Another "weakness" is the lack of WLAN other than in the reception area. I assume that this is deliberate but is a pretty irritating to say the least.

Finally, I think that the reastaurant staff let the side down a bit. Lots of bodies but staff were not that attentive. The food is ok but nothing brilliant.

Overall, a very nice hotel but some room for improvement.

We didnt stay at the hotel, but we did use the bar, restarant at the Kralleralm and the spa. The bar was small and unfortunately next to where people were eating, so didnt really have a good bar feel. The Kralleralm seems to be the local hot spot. Its great to pop in for lunch, and in the evening turns into a really nice restaurant, night club, its set on a couple of floors and has been decorated beautifully quirkily. We had our best and worst meal here. The best was really good and the worst was on N.Y eve when they were catering for a lot of people, and it was expensive, and nothing special. We also got overcharged on our bill which is very hard to sort afterwards. The spa is nothing less than divine, and probably the best i have been to. The staff were all really good, and the treatments excellent. My only gripe, was as a non resident we paid a 30 euro supplement, which although understandable, we were not advised at the tie of booking

We stayed at this hotel to celebrate out 25th wedding anniversary in June. Everything about the hotel really was superb and we had such a truly wonderful and memorable time. A foodie and scenery lovers heaven!
It must be hard for independant hotels to beat the standards set by the high-end chains such as Four Seasons, Six Senses etc, but Der Krallerhof really blew us away with the quality and determination to wow the guest and manages to deliver exceptional standards and quality throughout.
The location is stunning with the Alps backdrop taking our breath away every moment we were there and the design of the resort along with some of the most imaginative and contemporary room designs we have come across really showed the level of thought and real care that has gone into making this place one of our favourites!
Outstanding service plus incredible food along with such superb facilities made us so sad to leave and so determined to go back! Leogang and Austria may not be the usual obvious choice for holidays but this hotel and the scenery delivered on every level.
We loved it and will definitely return!!
Thanks to the team for making our Silver Wedding so memorable!!

I have been going to Austria for an Easter break for several years and every time I have stayed a couple of nights at Der Krallerhof. It is an absolute gem!!! This is a lovely family-run hotel, a wonderful place for relaxation in a beautiful setting.

The rooms are stunning and beautifully designed. Last time I stayed in one of the recently renovated single rooms. The walls and flooring were of wood, the couch and carpet silver-colour, the bathroom was fantastic. I slept really well.

Food is always excellent and very high quality. I love the Krallerhof breakfast müsli! Dinner is a real gourmet experience.

The spa (Refugium) is simply stunning, out of this world. Several saunas, a large indoor swimming pool, sun loungers, relaxation rooms. The spa has been recently extended and now also includes a heated outdoor swimming pool with wonderful views of the mountains.

The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. They really make you feel like at home. When I arrived I was given a welcome drink and at leaving a nice leaving present. The owners of the hotel are actively involved in running it and know personally regular guests who have been going there for several years.

This hotel is a wonderful place for pure relaxation. There is a plenty to do there both in summer and in winter if you like sports and being active, lots of nice places to visit nearby. It is better to have a car to get around, but it is such a stunning place that you could just end up spending several days lazing around in bathrobe not wanting to leave…!

I will be going to the Krallerhof again very soon…
