I stayed at this hotel as part of a tour operator package. Having stayed in a number of package tour hotels over the years I can definately say this was the best so far.
Excellent room with good facilities and a balcony and veiw of the mountains. The single room was spacious and had the advantage of an innner lobby so there was an extra door between the bedroom and corridor so cutting out almost all noise.
The hotel was immaculatley clean in both the room and the public areas.
There are in hotel sauna, pool etc but the free access to the massive thermal spa via an access tunnel was a very good bonus.
Staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel organised curling evening was a great few hours of entertainment.
Food was very good, staying on half board I found I rarely needed to each much on the mountain for lunch. Breakfast had good continetal style choice with hot eggs and bacon daily, most days there were freshly cooked pancakes of waffles available plus all the usual pastries cakes fruit etc.
Evening meals were also very good, 4 home cooked courses of very good quality but only limited choice (selected at breakfast), plus a salad bar.
Drinks prices were reasonable but some wines seemed a little expensive.
It is centrally located in the town but is a quiet area and the town is quiet at night compared to many other resorts i have visited, it is approx 10-12 mins walk to the ski lift or there are very frequent ski busses that are free with your lift pass( drivers do not ask to see it).
There is no real defined bar area, I think this is because when the hotel is full the Cafe Pretzel is used for residents dining and would otherwise be a nice bar area, in fact during the day this seems to be the case, it is a shame as the bar area is often a nice focal point for the exchange of tips and hints about the resort and pistes from fellow skiers. As mentioned by other reviewers the lounge area by reception is not really large enough, but if you happen to get a seat by the log fire is a cosy place, drinks can be ordered and are brought to the lounge for you.
My stay was during Austrian half term and the hotel was full to capacity, even so my opinion was that the owners and staff went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome.
All in all an excellent stay at a very comfortable well run family hotel, I shall return to this hotel should I visit this resort again.

I have been to Bad Hofgastein before and stayed at the Germania which is also a fine hotel. This time I had a package from Crystal ski holidays for the Osterreichischerhof - a week from 19th January.

The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of town. Next shops, banks etc. You can easily walk to the Schlossalm ski lift once you know the route. It is very convenient - unlike hotels on the periphery. It was quiet at night so you could sleep well.

Hotel itself was fine. I had a suite of rooms on the fourth floor. Big hall with cooker, fridge, sink and cupboards. Bathroom, separate WC. One room on left had a three piece suite, a dining table in the corner with banquette seating, a single bed, tv and wardrobes. Another room on the right had a large double bed and masses of wardrobes. I did not book a suite but this is what I ended up with. Decor was immaculate throughout the hotel.

Food was excellent - five course evening meals - duck, venison guinea fowl etc. Wine and beer were inexpensive 4.40 for a quarter litre of wine, four euros for a wheat beer. Hotel had its own pool which was never too busy, plus sauna, gym etc.

There was a beautiful underground corridor connecting the hotel to the Alpentherm facilities which were free to guests. This was a pleasant option after skiing.

All the staff were very helpful. I would definitely return here.

Having spent most of my skiing holidays in Austria, one of the things I look forward to most is the 'gemutlichkeit' or welcome that one gets from the Austrian hostelry owners - go back a second time, even if years later, and you are welcomed like an old friend. If it is your first time, in my previous experience, they do everything to convince you that if you ever return to Austria, their hotel is the only possible place to which you would wish to come. Sadly, this is not the case with this hotel..... and it comes from the top. The owners were distant and my impression was that they didn't care whether we were there or not. When we were leaving, we were handing in our key cards and they were taken without so much as a wish to us to have a safe journey home!! One notable exception was our lovely waiter Jansch(?) who lifted our spirits with his lovely smiling face. Thank you Jansch.
I might have tolerated the lack of welcome/friendliness if everything else was good. I always stay in 4 star hotels when I ski as I like to look forward to good food and nice spa after a hard day's work on the slopes. This hotel claims to be 4 star and it is not. The food was very average and the buffet area was so badly designed that it was a nightmare to try to get at the food if there were more than about 4 people seeking to do so. Stick with the house wine too as the bottled wine was more than twice the price and the one bottle we drank was not even as nice as the carafe wine - which is actually quite good value and that was a bonus at the end of the week when we paid our drinks bill!
If you wish to sit around after dinner, you need to dine early and rush out to get the very few seats in the small 'bar' area which is actually a very drab reception area seating about 25 (in two separated areas) at full capacity but if 2 are already at a table for 6 it is not conducive to join them and therefore there were usually about 10 people there when one came out for dinner with no prospect of a seat without intruding on others. This didn't hugely bother us as it was so deadly dull we didn't want to stay there but we would rather have had a nice bar in our hotel than have to head out again.
Our room was just adequate with minimal toiletries. A small phial of shampoo ran out, was put pointedly in the waste bin (with nothing else in the bin) and was not replaced until a request was phoned down for same. The bed was comfortable though and the hotel was very quiet at night - the only upside of a very dull hotel!!
The thing that saved our holiday in the end was the fact that this hotel has free access by an underground tunnel to the amazing Alpentherme to which we decamped every evening after skiing but this would not be enough to tempt me to return to this hotel. There are others which also have this facility. The hotel's own spa area was uninspiring and most went to the Alpentherme instead.

We stayed here this week last year because we enjoy this hotel and resort so much. Remarkably the lady owner remembered us which was amazing as she must see thousands of guests each year :) Lots of skiing and boarding for my husband and lots of shopping and Spa time for me! It's such a pretty area and this hotel is just perfect. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and efficient. Hotel is very central, within a pedestrian precinct, so very quiet. Its 10 minutes walk to the ski lifts or the ski bus stops just outside. The 'cherry on the cake' is free access to Alpen Therme. Google it, it's wonderful! In the little town there is an outside skating rink and two Langlauf ski schools, as well as opportunities for tobogganing, Tandem Flying and a sleigh ride through the local national park. We book through Thomson's and breakfast and dinner are included but there are lots of cosy cafes for lunch or coffee and cake for the rest of the day. Would love to come in the Summer.

This hotel has so much going for it, the location, the building and food. However it is missing some important human qualities - service is functional, in contrast to many Austrian hotels, and the absence of a bar in which to have those important après-ski conversations is a real shame. Also the hotel rooms are fine, a little small, but not particularly welcoming.

We stayed at this hotel (with Crystal) as a family of four (children aged 8 and 5) over the Christmas period 2012. The hotel is cosy, very well decorated and very very hot! Our room was a little small for the four of us. We had the bedroom which was a twin room - but with a single bed too by the window. It was very cramped and you couldn't walk easily because of this. The other bed was in a separate living room. We also had a kitchenette (which we didn't use) which had a small rental fee attached - fridge, cooker, cutlery, utensils etc. Decent sized bathroom with a heated towel rail - great for wet ski clothes!
Food here is superb - slightly 'A la carte' with many courses each night. Every morning at breakfast we were given the menu for the evening and there were usually 3 choices for the main course. My children are incredibly fussy and did not really eat anything for the whole week - although there was a children's menu available.
There is no real bar area in the hotel and most people went up to their rooms after the had finished their evening meal.
The best part about this hotel is the underground link to the Alpentherme - which we used every day for free. We hired dressing gowns from the hotel and bought flip flops (take your own as they are all one size - ladies 6). You saunter down the tunnel directly from the hotel, which has many other hotels attached too. It is a fantastic added bonus. There is family world - 2 fast slides; lazy river. Relax world - very hot water with fountains etc. 2 outdoor pools, jacuzzi, saunas, ladies world etc. Fantastic!
The town of Bad Hofgastein is small but very functional. When we were there over Christmas, there was a small Christmas market selling trinkets, food etc. The town was decorated beautifully, with large red bauble theme on the many Christmas trees! Just across from the hotel there is a very good Spar - good pastries; alcohol, everything you would need. Although it was closed from the Sat we got there (23rd) to 10 am on Boxing day. A few little restaurants in the town - only went to one for a hot chocolate so couldn't comment on the food quality.
Skiing - this was my husbands's 8th ski trip. my 3rd and the kids first. The free ski bus (with the lift pass) picked us up just outside the hotel boot room and they are very reliable and frequent. The bus drops you off at the bottom of the Schlossalm where the ski school offices and Intersport (for ski hire etc.) are located. We used the 'Schneesport Schule' for myself and the children. They were absolutely fantastic. They work out of the Angertal ski centre - so you jump on the ski bus which takes you up the mountain in about 15 minutes. Here there is direct access to all the slopes - gondolas, chairlifts and the ski school meeting points. The kids ski school was excellent - would DEFINITELY recommend them - 3 ski runs with their own conveyor lifts under tunnels! We had the brilliant Alex and Maxime as instructors. Food included too. Adult ski school was excellent too - had a great laugh with 3 other fantastic women, all us early intermediates who tested the patience of the excellent Walter who had us doing black runs by day 3! Plenty of restaurants to eat - reasonable prices. I was spending between 7 - 8 euros a day on lunch with a drink.
The hotel and the area I would thoroughly recommend and would definitely return . Christmas gala dinner in the hotel on the 24th was never ending and i could barely move from the table after it! Superb holiday, fantastic memories, excellent company and very sad to leave!

This hotel as most in the area is obviously a winter sports based business.
But, visit in the summer months and get a completely different appreciation of the Alpines.
Bad Hofgastein is small Thermal Spa resort roughly 1 hour south of Saltzburg snuggled in the Gastein Valley.
If you love the great outdoors and like to be surrounded by beautiful mountains streams and green valleys then this is the place to be.
Walking/cycling/climbing and a natural Spa facility are all available from the doorstep.
Osterreichisherhof (via Thomsons) include a pass for unlimited access to the famous Spa complex a 5 minute walk away accessed by underground walkway from within the hotel so even if the weather is not good you arrive warm and dry.
They also have a limited pool of basic cycles which are free to use (not mountain bike style) and are perfectly adequate to tootle along the paths beside the river/stream flowing the length of the valley.
You will also be given free a Gastein Card which gives you cheaper travel on the local buses and gets reduced entry charges to various attractions in the area including the cable cars.
There are 5 cable car ride options relatively locally (one being just a 10 minute walk away).
The world is your oyster both from the doorstep and from the cable car summits for something a little more challenging.
Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and many have a balcony (ask for it when booking as the views from same are worth the extra you have to pay).
Last but not least one has to mention food - at this hotel I can honestly not fault a single aspect. It is varied, plentiful and very well presented at all meals and the staff are knowledgeable and extremely courteous (my being a coeliac) was not a problem.
Your stay here will be warm and welcoming from the time you arrive until the time you leave.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have balconies but ask for one/book one with a mountain view up the valley. It is a l...
