We stayed in the family suite during a recent visit to Ko Samed.

The location was great - no more than a minute or two to walk to a couple of different beaches, and lots of restaurants to choose from.

The view from the suite balcony was beautiful, particularly at sunrise.

The breakfast was OK - the children enjoyed the toast and cereals, and the Thai breakfast was tasty. The coffee was terrible though.

The rooms were pretty basic. We've stayed in some YHA family rooms around the UK, and this felt pretty similar. Nothing drastically wrong or awful, but just pretty basic. The furniture was old and tired. But the aircon worked well.

The cleaners visited most days, although there was one occasion when they left clean towels and bottles of water hanging on our door, but didn't come in and clean the room.

The grounds were similar to the rooms - it just needs someone with decent standards and a fresh eye to come in and point out that the piles of rubble and building materials here and there just need to be tidied up.

The staff on the whole were pretty disinterested, and bored looking. Apart fron the guy serving breakfast who was really friendly, and had a great singing voice.

The room was very spacious, clean, with very good Wi Fi and with an ocean view. A perfect place to relax and to enjoy the quiet island. A very nice pool with comfortable poofs and chairs. Breakfast was just ok. The only thing that needed to improve was the staff, they don’t smile at all and completely lack a sense of service. I will return there for my next vacation.

Location of the resort was relatively beautiful and calm during the day, but after sunset loud music took over and because of the thin walls of the bungalow, we could hear everything through them. If you're light sleeper instead of a party animal, remember to bring earplugs with you.

Restaurant, staff and the pool area were nice, but oh the room we stayed in.. The bungalow was very small, and only table you were able to put your stuff on was one nightstand. That's right, just one in a double room, eventhough there would have been just enough space for other as well.

Bathroom was hidious! It was covered with paint stains and shower corner was everything but nice to look at. Showed itself worked poorly; you never know when you're going to get hot water and when not. Also the water pressure was very weak.

Wifi worked in the bungalow just occasionaly, that was a big disappointment.

Eventhough we enjoyed our stay in Vimarn Samed resort, I kind of think that the place was overpriced.

We booked last minute (everything else on this Vongduen beach unavailable) and for the price (1,700 baht on Agoda for room in their building not Thai house) was pretty good. We got 2 single beds, pushed them together and comfortably fit 2 adults and 2 young children. Room was clean and everything we needed for a quick stay. Haven't been back in 6 years so nice there is a swimming pool and lounge area too. Had a quick lunch and food was ok. Would imagine breakfast to be the same standards. May come back during Songkran for a longer stay considering price and room is of value and rooms on this beach starting to get filled up/become expensive.

I've reviewed this place before and gave it a good score.

However, on our last visit, we decided that it would be our last visit to this hotel.

The last few times we went there, it was a bit rough around the edges, but the location made up for it. No more, I'm afraid

The staff have gone downhill, the place is starting to fall apart, and since our last outing here, they seem to have started to build a pool, then lost interest about 75% of the way through.

As well as the dismal state of the hotel, the beach that it sits on has also suffered a downturn in fortunes, it seems. Most of the bars and restaurants were empty, with the two or three exceptions being the ones that had package groups of Chinese tourists.

I spoke to one of the bars owners and she readily admitted that their own greed over the past few years had led to the current state of affairs. You see, most of the tourists, especially European ones, that used to frequent Samed, were independent travelers. In other words, people who would book their own holidays. So, when they got tired of being ripped off, they simply changed the location of their vacation when they were internet shopping, and headed off to horizons new, and, as most people will know, losing good customers is a hell of a lot easier to do than enticing them back.

It really is sad to see such a lovely little hotel, and such a lovely little beach go into such a decline.

We checked out a few other locations on the island, and found a potential replacement of the hotel and beach that wasn't too far from Au Weung Deang, so we're going to try that next time.

Samed has so much potential, Island living within a 3 hour easy drive from Bangkok, I'd be really sad to see the whole place decline as much as this hotel and beach.

I'll keep you posted on the new choice .

Room tip: I can't recommend anything about this hotel anymore, I'm sad to say.
