overcrowded development

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 31, 2012
This Ao Thian beach of Samet used to be a laid back jewel many years ago. Since then, it has been raped by the local developers, who have even built extensively right on the shore, pouring concrete over the rocks. I would boycott it for this reason.

This resort is particularly overdeveloped, with two floors houses crowded tightly in a small plot; tasteless decoration in the room, plastic bed-sheets, an untidy yard - I call it unplanned greed. The service is ok, people are working hard as usual in Thailand, but this does not justify paying for the poor choices made by the owner. And it is not even cheap!

There is no restaurant but you can just walk next door to the Viking's place, where I tasted the most carelessly prepared noodles in a very long time. Yet, you can lay down on the concrete deck built on the rocks and meditate on what National Parks was doing when all this development was put in place, eating up the natural beauty of the island to give a fiction of tropical life to undiscerning tourists.

We stayed in this resort for 2 nights in one of the groundfloor sea view rooms with aircondition.
The room was nice and clean and the staff was friendly.

There weren´t many other guests there, which might be due to the low season and the ridiculous long and scary taxi ride and walk to the resort. It just had rained the days before we arrived and the road was full of massive cracks and wholes which might suggest if in similar circumstances you should go by boat if you can, which also saves you the walk through the jungle to get there.

The beach is wonderful with white sand and clear blue water!

Because you are quite secluded you have to deal with the island prices for food and drinks in restaurant. It was about 150-200 Baht for a cocktail, and about 100-300 Baht for a meal in the nearby restaurant.
Also the closest tiny "supermarket" sells pot noodles and alcohol for sometimes double the price than the one on the next beach.

If you don´t mind spending a little bit more money than for other accomodations on Ko Samet and like the secluded area it is a really nice choice, but prepare so you don´t need anything urgently (even money, the next ATM doesnt even work most of the time), because then you gonna pay more than normally in Thailand.

We can recommend this place to people who like it quiet, secluded and dont mind higher prices.

The beach is nice and quiet. The water is clean and clear. We have 3 little kids and we pay $100 a night to stay at this hotel. The staff is nice but the hotel is horrible. The mosquitoes are all over in the room. My kids got bitten up all over. We asked the owner if we could switch the room because our kids are allergy with the mosquitoes but he said most room are like this one. Anyway, I will never go back to this place again.

Don’t get this place confused with the Sang Thian Beach Resort a few doors down. We did, and ended up spending one night in a place we hadn’t already paid for. Yikes. Although both places are fairly equal, each with its own benefits. Ban Thai is a small hotel built in the traditional style. It’s located in the middle of the beach with restaurants in both directions. The beds were nice and comfy, which is a big deal in Asia, as most beds are rock hard. The owner is very nice and friendly, and her English is quite decent. The beach in front of the hotel is hard to describe. It’s hemmed in on both sides by cement decks from the neighboring hotels, and additionally hemmed in by some naturally occurring rocks, but it is a white sand beach. It is fairly quiet, even though we were supposedly there during high season. We really loved the shady trees covering most of the beach, where we able to place a couple of chairs and a table, read our books, watch the birds and the ocean and take occasional dips in the water. We were at Ban Thai for 5 nights and our room never got cleaned or straightened. Our only other complaint is with the noise. We really need to stay away from “Traditional Thai Architecture.” Although lovely, it means the rooms have absolutely no sound-proofing from the neighbors. This means you here all there conversations and whatever tv show or music they decide to listen to. But, we are sensitive to sound, so this might not bother others. But we really enjoyed ourselves on the beach, we may have never had such a relaxing vacation in our lives.
