“Simple Beachfront Accommodation”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

You can't compare Koh Samed accommodations to other places like Phuket or even Koh Phi Phi. It's an island beachfront chalet, simple and clean. From what I could see of the other properties they were about the same standard, nothing flashy - but really on this particular you wouldn't want anything too flashy as that invites a different type of crowd.

The beach here we found to be slightly busy, but not to the point that you were annoyed with loads of people walking past kicking up sand - it was nice, relaxed and quiet. A very family beach.

The white fine sand and clear water is what you really want - then a clean aircon room to cool down and get a good night's sleep.

We ate at the Cabana restaurant for dinner 2 of the 3 nights we were there, food was excellent and seafood was fresh and prepared well. If you like fish, I recommend the Sea Bass - steamed, ensure it's done Thai style with lemon absolutely fantastic - even better that the price is not expensive, about 420baht which was very reasonable for a whole fish.

At night the Cabana does play music whilst serving dinner of which, if you're in a beachfront chalet you will hear a bit of the bass, BUT that's not really a downside as they turn it off quite early around 22:30 / 23:00.

The beach at night is quite quiet and they have fire shows during dinner times which provides a little entertainment.

From the Cabana beach you can actually walk to the main beach Had Sai Keaw using a beachfront trail which connects the beaches - we had lunch there in a very local Thai place, excellent food - you will definitely see the difference in busy beaches as Had Sai Keaw being the main touristy beach you can tell will be much noisier at night.

The island to me still feels somewhat well protected and not industrialized with big hotel resorts. It looks like they take care of the surroundings very well, everyday I saw people sweeping up leaves not just in front of their properties but out onto the beach part as well to keep the place looking pristine which was excellent.

So if you want relaxing, quiet and not expecting 5-star large resort type accommodation then stay here - it's cleaned everyday, staff are nice and quite helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for beachfront chalet away from the restaurant.

Stayed two nights here in late October. This resort is located in Ao Wong Deuan (Wong Deuan Bay) one of the busier bays on the southeastern side of Samed Island. Our group of 20 arrived direct by speedboat from Taruae Ban Phe (Ban Phe Pier) on the mainland in about 15 minutes and we stepped directly onto the beach in front of the resort (5,000THB for a return journey, or 250THB per person in our group). By comparison the much cheaper big blue ferry picks up large volumes (50 - 75 at a time) of tourists and dumps them onto an open barge in the hot sun which brings them onto the beach.

Most visitors stay in the busier resorts in the middle of the bay. Samed Cabana is in the quieter northern end with nice big trees on the property and on the beach in front of the restaurant. There is definitely much less noise here at night than other parts of the bay. The bungalows and restaurant are set 25 - 40m back from the water with a wide clean sandy beach in between. The resort is on an east facing beach so the restaurant and beach area receive quite intense sun early in the morning on a clear day.

The water off the beach was reasonably clear although there are plenty of boats entering and leaving the bay. There must be runoff from the resorts during rainstorms (May - October). I didn't see more than a few bits of paper garbage in the water or on the sand. There are people picking up garbage during the day, and they seem to keep the place reasonably clean. The pool was also pleasantly clean although it clearly gets a lot of use.

Not much in the way of fish or marine life off the beach. You'll have to take a boat trip out to small offshore islands to see reef and rock fish.

There are some nice older rooms facing onto the beach but our room was a newer poolside room. These rooms are nice and big but rely on aircon and are not designed for power failure. During a storm we found that when the power goes off there is not much ventilation or natural light. The front sliding glass door has no insect mesh so in this situation you have to keep the door closed all the time and it gets hot and stuffy in there. A ceiling fan would have been a good option to save energy. So would solar panels on the roof.

We were impressed with the attentiveness of staff and the manageress to our group, even when there were many people needing service at the lobby and restaurant. We had various requests since our group included 12 young children under the age of 8. Staff were friendly and able to meet all our requests (packed leftover food in containers to eat in the room, reheating plates of food not eaten at lunch for the evening meal, extra blankets, pillows etc).

The breakfast buffet had good Western choices, and a few Asian options but you'll have to wait for the tables to clear mid-morning before they warm up the Conti coffee maker for real coffee! We had a nice a la carte dinner one evening and the Thai choices were good. We ate from the recommended Thai seafood dishes on the menu. I find that those are the best choices at these kind of places since the cook really knows how to prepare the food. I did not venture to eat any Western food except for my morning omelette. Wine and beer choices were good and there is a minimart next door if you want to buy your own drinks. There were bottles of Chilean and Australian wine in the minimart for 650THB, not a bad price to pay for a resort island.

There are plenty of eating options at restaurants and bars along the beach. We didn't see the need to move from this bay, and didn't venture far from the resort except for an afternoon snorkelling trip. We had pretty much everything we needed right there.

Room Tip: Rooms by the beach face onto the water but get the full blast of the sun in the morning. Rooms arou...

Hotel on Ko Samed is located on a very busy beach with many other noisy resorts and restaurants. It is more pleasant to arrive by boat instead by the road.
Very simple comfort rooms at a very hight price (4000 to 5000 baths). Pleasant staff at the restaurant and terrible staff (an old woman) at the reception. Waters from the hotels directly into the sea.

Room Tip: Pay the maximum to be on the front rooms (5000baths) or choose a real paradise beach 5 minutes walk...

We have spent about three nights at the resort. The staff was friendly and the resort was situated in a less noisy area compared to the other resorts on the island. the beach in front of the resort was excellent. Resort offers Malibu boat transportation for 140 baths two way and they will drop you off in front of the resort directly. The rooms are clean just in pir case the security safe was not working. The breakfast was good and offers variety of food to choose. The resot had problem with wifi and we were not able to connect at all during our stay hence visited near restaurants to plug in.

I've been to this beach 3 or 4 times now, and I chose Samed Cabana Resort because reviews indicated the food was better than average and their page indicated that wifi was available. Aside from breakfast, the quality of which was very uneven to say the least, I had two meals in their restaurant.

The second meal, a dinner, gave me the worst case of food poisoning I've ever had.

I spent the night vomiting and feeling miserable. The irony is that I chose to have dinner in their restaurant because I also had important emails to send out, and thought I could kill two birds with one stone. Not only was the internet not working, the staff was particularly dismissive and unhelpful--not even a hint of an apology. I gave very clear instructions to the waitress that I would like my meal to be vegetarian, but every dish they brought out included shrimp or squid. After becoming violently ill it was clear that they just picked out the offending bits and sent it back to me, contaminated.

Furthermore, the rooms are really nothing special, and the bathrooms lack even a basic a sense of privacy--there are vertical slats in the wall about three inches wide that offer views directly into the bathroom! Being rather tall, I managed to use a towel to cover up a couple of them, but still felt rather uncomfortable.

And to boot, they kicked me out of the room after I booked my boat off of the island as I was in the middle of watching my football team! Talk about adding insult to injury..

I will be returning to Vongduen Villa, at the opposite end of the same beach, which is much better value for money and is much quieter and more peaceful, anyhow.

If you are staying on vong duang beach, the samed cabana is a good choice. Nice rooms on the beach, great great staff, good food. Easy, friendly and relaxing. Nice pool. Walk around, nice views and other beaches to enjoy. Stay away from sea horse, horrible. Will return to samed cabana if going back to this area.

Room Tip: Room b4. Close to the main lobby and restaurant you can get the wifi connection in this room.

We went there for the weekend with some friends from Bangkok. It's only a little over 2 hours drive to the ferry. The Malibu boat will drop you right at the resort and there is a thing like a landing craft to transfer to the beach (so wear shorts or you'll get wet).
The staff were very friendly and the check in smooth. Yes, as reported, the rooms are basic with cement floors, but that's what Koh Samet is all about. Reminds me of my backpacking days, except then an air-con room on the beach was rare (and I couldn't afford it anyway).
You can get a taxi from behind the shop to the main nightlife. But If you dont want noisy techno music and a fire show then you can stay on this beach, there are about six restaurants to choose from. Altogether not a bad place to stay for a relaxing weekend.
