“Good value, great staff”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

If you are staying on vong duang beach, the samed cabana is a good choice. Nice rooms on the beach, great great staff, good food. Easy, friendly and relaxing. Nice pool. Walk around, nice views and other beaches to enjoy. Stay away from sea horse, horrible. Will return to samed cabana if going back to this area.

Room Tip: Room b4. Close to the main lobby and restaurant you can get the wifi connection in this room.

We went there for the weekend with some friends from Bangkok. It's only a little over 2 hours drive to the ferry. The Malibu boat will drop you right at the resort and there is a thing like a landing craft to transfer to the beach (so wear shorts or you'll get wet).
The staff were very friendly and the check in smooth. Yes, as reported, the rooms are basic with cement floors, but that's what Koh Samet is all about. Reminds me of my backpacking days, except then an air-con room on the beach was rare (and I couldn't afford it anyway).
You can get a taxi from behind the shop to the main nightlife. But If you dont want noisy techno music and a fire show then you can stay on this beach, there are about six restaurants to choose from. Altogether not a bad place to stay for a relaxing weekend.

We booked this hotel for our first night on Koh Samet, figuring we did not want to worry about finding accommodations upon arrival. This turned out to be a very good strategy. Our beachfront room was okay, with comfortable enough beds and a clean bathroom. The downsides were a concrete slab floor (not too attractive) and a slew of tiny ants coming in through a gap between a wall and the foundation. Given the jungle setting, insects and lizards are probably par for the course.

Breakfast was serviceable, but not great, with less protection against flies than I might have liked.

The property has internet, but only in the central/reception area, not in the rooms. As one might expect on a remote island, all internet access seems quite slow. We did, however, have perfect cell phone reception.

Vehicles cannot drive right up to the beach properties in Ao Vongduern, but Samed Cabana is very close to where the songthaews drop off, which is nice if you have heavy bags. Otherwise, the location is as good as any other along this beach, though it's worth noting that Ao Vongduern in general requires an extra 20 minutes by boat or songthaew compared with some other hotel options on Koh Samet. (Worth it for a quieter setting, in my opinion). Also worth noting: Google Maps knows nothing about Koh Samet geography or roads, so find an island-specific map to get a lay of the land before choosing a beach or hotel.

Given that there are a number of places along Ao Vongduern (or "Wong Duean" -- it's spelled a lot of different ways) within a 5-minute walk, we decided to look around to see if we wanted to stay somewhere else for our subsequent three nights before just reserving at Samed Cabana. We ended up finding nicer accommodations at Vongduern Resort for about half the price. We tried to negotiate with Samed Cabana so as to avoid moving, but they would only flex very slightly. So we ended up moving down the beach.

Setting is everything with this collection of bungalows; tucked into the corner of a quiet white sand beach on the west coast of Koh Samet, these are exactly what you would expect from a mid-range Thai beach resort. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable and the restaurant well situated under the shade of trees on the beach. The pool is a bonus as the tide can be very low in the morning and is great for a cool off in the afternoon.

The food is cheap and tasty and the menu will cover most tastes. There is a convenient shop next door and a boat booking service on reception. The highlight are the polite, attentive staff who took the time to get to know me and chat daily as I was travelling alone.

There are a few simple things that could be done to improve things; there are very limited channels on the tv and no English speaking channels which is no problem on a sunny day but when I rains....
The wifi is free but very temperamental only working in the restaurant and not at all inthe rooms.

My stay was pleasant enough and I probably would stay again due to the convenience and closeness to Bangkok.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the start of July with my boyfriend. It was the most expensive place we have stayed during our 2 month travels in Thailand, at nearly 3000 baht a night we were expecting something special.

On arrival the lady at reception snarled at us and shouted "NO ROOMS!" to which I said "we have a reservation" to which she glared at me like I was stupid and said "MISS, NO ROOM LEFT!" I'm not sure if she had been bombarded with travellers that day, or if our appearance didn't imply we would book somewhere lile that in advance, but I was not impressed. Once I found the confirmation paper and waved it around, she said "oh, booking..." with no apology, and started flicking through papers then handed us something to sign before going back to what she was doing. Another member of staff brought us a weird icey drink and carried our bags to our room. In all fairness that male staff member was very fiendly and helpful and was quick to fix our blocked toilet later that evening. The bad service extended to the next day when we asked for a map and for someone to direct us to a dfferent beach, the women asked for 20 baht, which I didnt have on me. When I asked if I could just see the map to get my bearings, she refused until I payed. I've stayed in places for 300 baht a night where the staff are more than happy to give u a map and circle places of interest and direct you. Not what you expect when paying 3000 baht a night.

The room location is amazing, definitely get a beach front room if possible as it makes up for the rooms which are average at best. For the price we payed I expected more. The bed sheets were stained, we didn't have beach towels or face towels (which is a picky complaint however you do expect two sets of towels in a place of this price). The shower just didn't seem clean or nice, we had come from khao sok where we stayed in little huts, and the bathroom there was FAR better than the one here... we had a cockroach in our bed, which I know the resort can't help, but it wasn't a nice thing to find. Overall we were disapointed with the room, but the fact we had an amazing view of the beach and sea more than made up for it. As travellers who have been staying in cheap hostels it was more than adequate, however for the price you would want something a bit nicer.

The breakfast was ok. Nothing to shout about. There's toast, a choice of hot food (eggs, sausage, beans, rice) and a lady makes fresh omelettes. The menu is ok, food is averagely priced (around 100 baht for a Thai meal with rice) and all the meals we had were good. The waiters were very friendly although it seemed a bit unorganised at times and lacked that peofessional feeling you expect when you pay more for a room. I'd advise walking further to the right of the beach for evening meals as the atmosphere down there is much better.

The beach is beautiful, the sand is white and the staff keep the beach area around the resort clean. It's a shame the upkeep doesn't extend to the sea. To say the 200 baht entrance fee for the island is supposed to be for upkeep, I have never been in sea that is that full of rubbish! Every step u took u would stand on a plastic bag, or a long piece of plastic wrapping would wrap around your legs... It wasn't pleasant so we stuck to the pool, which is really nice. I'm not sure what the other beaches on the island are like, but the sea here isn't great.

Overall the location is what makes this resort. I'm not sure this would be the same if you stayed in a room further back. The rooms are basic and not worth the price (if u forget about the location) and some of the staff are not very friendly or helpful.

The hotel nearly made the grade but if not careful could slide downhill from what I saw during a 3 day, 2 night break. Nothing spectacular wrong but could do with a little more care and attention and a cosmetic lick of paint and varnish would improve appearance no end.
Location is terrific, booked a beach front bungalow and have no complaints about the views from room,
Free WiFi provided in reception/dining area.
Breakfast ok but disappointed with evening meals and general service, all staff pleasant but just lacked that professional touch at times. Don't miss one of the fire-shows on the beach from around 8:30pm each night......very good.
Ferry service runs from Ban Phe pier directly to hotel 3 times a day (check times first) very cheap at 70 baht per person for 60 minute ride.
Island tours can be booked at reception, took a 3 island option cost 600 baht and well worth the 5 hours spent at other islands, lunch and cold water provided along with snorkel gear if required.
Plenty of local shops around but as you would expect, higher prices than on mainland.

Overall, the island and surrounding areas are idyllic and a great chill out for a few days, would look at other options next time but not sure would get this location for price paid on sawadee.com, good value at time of booking.

Stayed earlier this year (2012). Certainly value for money. We stayed in a waterfront room with beautiful views of the ocean. The hotel is situated at the far end of the beach and is removed from the hustle and bustle of boats coming and going, off loading people and goods. Great for people watching from the water and the water was warm! In the middle of the beach retaurants can be found, in the evening, fresh fish caught that day is on display ready for you to pick for dinner, all cooked on the beach on a BBQ. If you're looking for and upmarket experience this isn't the place for you.
The room was very simple, the bathroom could have been cleaner (greem grime on stone floor of shower). The bed was rock hard! We stayed three nights and that was enough. Would we go again? Probably not, but would recommond to those who are looking for an escape from the mainland. You must do a snorking trip (3 hours) well worth it. Cost about $16NZ.
