“Nice place, good people with a few downsides”

We were used to the dumps at Sai Keaw and wanted a change thus we decided to cough up a little bit more per night and went to the Samet Villa. We were 3 Families with 4 kids and had another, an older, couple staying with us. Compared to all the other places we have been, Samed Villa is really clean and has an appealing character. Staff there is very nice and most of they paid good attention to their guests. It is certainly correct that it can get very loud at night but with the UPVC double glazed windows in their bungalows, this is not a problem anymore. Rooms are spacious and offer a clean bathroom, a great bedroom (with TV and Safe) and the terrace of most bungalows is very nice. There are still a lot mosquitos during the evening hours and I would suggest you put some repellent on before sitting outside. This is also applies when sitting down below in restaurant or at the beach. Dinner's there are great, especially the Swiss Food (owner is Swiss) and the BBQ from the Beach. Talking about food, Samed Villa's breakfast is nice and offers a wide range of western and Asian dishes. In our group, everyone was happy.
Over the years Ao Phai Beach has developed in to a male dominated area and it is therefore recommended that you discuss gay related behavior with your children before or upon arrival. It is very common to see guys getting close with each other and we have, on several occasions, found condoms on the beach or in the water. Ao Phai, especially the Silversand part, was known for its very clean water and sandy beach, but these days are definitely over. To summarize my review, I can honestly say that Samed Villa is a nice and decent place but it is definitely in the wrong location, especially then when travelling with children and or people who look for peace and quiet environment. In addition to that it is obvious that Samed has lost his appeal and the island has become more and more a garbage dump and I keep wondering what the intentions were when this place was declared National Park in 1981.

I have been visiting Samet for 18 years and I always used to like Samet Villa - it was one of the best places on the island. Having just returned from a recent trip I have to say it is the last time I will stay there. Although the rooms look nice they smell very very musty - so much so that it is unpleasant and it affects your sleep. But that is nothing compared to what comes out of the taps: the tap water is brown and filthy. Absolutely disgusting. We had three bungalows and they were all the same so it is not an isolated case. I also stayed there about 8 months ago and the water was brown then but I put it down (stupidly) to weather conditions. It is not.

We brushed our teeth using bottled water but you still have to shower in the brown filth. I have two young kids and I was so concerned about the hygiene that we checked out early and went home.

On the plus side the restaurant is good but then you wonder if they are washing the plates in the same brown water we get in the rooms and suddenly the restaurant doesn't seem so good anymore.

To sum up: this is a very nice looking resort that used to be one of the best on the island but it has sadly gone downhill. If they haven't addressed the dirty tap water issue in the last eight months then it shows complete contempt for their customers. I know Samet has no mains water supply but I have stayed in plenty of other resorts (including some very nearby) that have clean water, so this is obviously their issue. My advice: stay away if you value your health.

P.S. This is not their fault but their is also a putrid brown channel of water that flows past their resort and in to the sea. It is an eyesore and a heath hazard.

This is my second time to Koh Samed, and first time to Samed Villa. Overall, I would say this is the best spot on the island for the mid-budget traveler, a great place for families, and one of the nicer places on the island--hands down.
First off, for families-the staff are truly wonderful and happy, and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and keep an eye out for your kids. The mix of gentle beach and jungle was perfect for my 9 y.o. boy who spent his days snorkeling for crabs in the gentle waves and hunting for lizards in the bushes. What a treat for him! My daughter enjoyed making friends with the many other young kids who were staying there as well, and they found plenty to keep them occupied.
I've now visited about 20 different spots (resorts and hotels) on the island and think Samed Villa is a gem. It's clean, well organized, and the staff are very sweet. You can tell the management is involved and competent and pride themselves on a well run resort. The restaurant and bar are good, and the seafood offerings are very well done. The whole decor of the place, from the beautiful gardens and walkways, orchids placed here and there, lights on the beach and the ambience, all very well done.
Bottom line was I felt this was a wonderful and safe environment for the children, my whole family enjoyed themselves, and I felt I got a great bargain! What more could you ask?
Only a few negatives--many mosquitos, but this was the rainy season and every place on the island suffers from this-not just Samed Villa. I only mention so that you buy a few of those large can mozzie sprays on the mainland to protect yourself! Theres a little stream by the side of the resort which channels rainwater runoff which you should not let your kids play in, as the water is not clean and some said would give kids a rash--just to note and again, these kinds of streams are all down the beach. Finally, unfortunately, so many partier types have left a lot of broken glass around some of the rocks along the beach--so you really must all wear some kind of shoes if you want to explore those.
Otherwise--if you have a family and are looking for a GREAT place, look no further. Samed Villa is #1 in my book. You'll love it!

Room Tip: Stay away from the restaurant and choose an ocean view room. Beautiful views!

Having stayed at this Villa for more than 30 times in 10 years we know it very well. It is a step up from Backpackers but not luxury accommodation. The rooms are adequate for the price, with free mosquito zapper to use. The water, (which is pumped from ships brought from the mainland) is often quite cool..
The owner is very helpful and the staff try to help, so no minus points there. Areas which I feel need improving. Some parts of the pathways are dark and not good for walking at night. The internet coverage is not good and due to thunderstorms is currently turned off at 10pm. The breakfast sadly is the same every day, which after 2 days becomes boring. There is also a problem with guests placing towels over loungers near the sea but not using them until hours later.
The new apartments look good and the beach dining is worth a visit. For each the Villa has a speedboat to take you to the mainland for between 150-250baht. The cheap way is to wait for the bus and ferry for 80baht, but have a treat take the speedboat.
Helpful staff, good accommodation, I just feel a few more things need to be down to keep it up with all the other new developments in the area.

Room Tip: Don't let them put you in C14-18 This row of apartments is next to the workers hut, has no view...

The resort has many different types of rooms to cater to different budgets. We were on a tight budget but stayed in a lovely "apartment" room here, for the same price as some very worn-out bungalows on the same beach. Great option if you want a comfortable room with all the amenities, hot shower and a private balcony. The price also includes a great international buffet breakfast. The restaurant serves delicious food throughout the day, and the evening BBQ on the beach is a must. The onsite spa offers fantastic massages in a tranquil wooden lodge; air-conditioned and private. Other facilities include kayaking and snorkel/mask rental, all at great prices. Beautiful setting within a tropical garden, tucked into the corner of gorgeous Ao Phai. The beach is quieter than the main beach Had Sai Kaew but within walking distance of it, and a short walk over the headland also leads to another stunning beach Ao Tubtim which is even quieter. Friendly and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the resort are quieter at night because they are further away from the beach-fr...

We stayed here recently and booked two superior family bungalows with sea view for us and eight other family members. After a busy schedule in Thailand we needed some relaxing time and that's what we did at this great resort! My wife and I went four times before to Koh Samed and this is the best stay by far at the east side of the island. We noticed that the bungalows, restaurant and reception just finished some renovations. The superior family bungalows were clean, comfortable, spacious and up-to-date with a flat screen tv, great bathroom, bed, balcony and nice decorated. The view at the beach was wonderful too. We could not hear noise from outside because of the thermopane, double glass windows, so the comments about noise issues we can't confirm. We had a great sleep. The location is great at a more quiet place of the beach, but still in walking distance to all the action. For families this location and the superior family bungalow are great because of the double bathroom and bedroom. The staff were friendly and proactive, clearly well instructed by the Swiss management. We used the Bangkok Hotel pick-up service and that was arranged well too. The buffet style breakfast was good with a wide selection of international and Thai food. In the evening the restaurants at the Saikeaw beach were in walking distance. All the seats and lights at the beach have such an romantic and special atmosphere. The restaurant at Samed Villa have also such an atmosphere with nice lights and the quality was good too. All in all it is a really nice, comfortable, reasonable priced resort and I can recommend this to everyone, specially families.

We stayed he for three nights recently and found the resort to be nicely laid out and with attractive decor. We explored up and down the coast and must say that this place looked by far one of the smarter resorts. Our room was clean and comfortable. We had a superior garden view bungalow, though I would say that 'view' isn't really the word. It was very leafy but we actually looked onto the back of another bungalow. The bungalows are laid out in rows. My preference would be for a sea view but some of these are fairly close to the restaurant and bar area, so could be noisy. However, the restaurant was closed by about 10 pm and the bar was very quiet after this time too.
The mini bar in the room was pretty cheap, with prices not much more than those in the local shops.
The food in the restaurant was very good, and reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet was quite good too, the freshly made omelettes being an attraction. Though a wider selection of fruit would have been nice (there was only water melon and pineapple). The coffee was fresh which was a plus.
As mentioned by other people, the down side was the noise on the Saturday night coming from Silver Sands just along the beach - a boom boom boom of bass that woke us up about 1:30am. We didn't get much sleep after that, it went on until about 5am! There was some noise from there on the Friday night too, but not as bad. This aspect spoilt the mini break for us really, which was a shame.
Another negative was the service at the bar/ restaurant area. We waited ages to be served on several occasions, and often there was no waiting staff to be seen. They appeared to be understaffed in this respect and a bit disorganised.
The beach area in front of the resort got pretty busy with rows of sun loungers. It seemed that you had to stake your claim early! However, the next beach along (Ao Tubtim) was very quiet, and only a short walk.
There are one or two small general shops around the place if you want bottles of water, etc.. but if you walk up to Saikaew beach and cut inland by Buddy Bar, walk through a small arcade with shops selling sarongs, postcards, etc. and carry on straight ahead, you reach the main shopping stretch (small and limited as it is) that has a couple of 7 Elevens.
All in all it was a very nice resort. We are likely to return to the island but will probably stay elsewhere to avoid the late night noise, and for a spot of variety!

Room Tip: Bungalows near the bar area are likely to be noisier. If you want a sea view, the bungalows going to...
