It's a new place, local people are so proud of that, but I don't think western people like it too much.
It's interesting because lovely local people!

Another of the incredible sights to see if you blow off the boat from Bagan and take a car to Monya and on to Mandalay. There is a 260 ft tall buddha that you can go up inside where it is covered in murals showing what you will suffer if you break this, that or the other rule of good behaviour. Wow, I'm gonna be a good boy, because them Buddhists will kick your butt HARD if you don't behave. There are all sorts of sufferin's you will endure if you cheat your neighbor, kick your dog, stick your chewing gum under the table at the restaurant. There is also a huge reclining Buddha, a giant Buddha garden and quite a few other pretty wild things to see in this little-visited CLASS A tourist attraction. Have lunch in the village, then drive up to Thanboddhay Paya to see some really incredible temples (don't forget to go up the tower for a bird's eye view) on your way to Monya.

If you come to Myanmar, you will see temples. and pagodas. and buddhas. many buddhas. and then some more .
So sooner or later, you do not care for just another one.
However, do think again - this one really is special. You can already see it from a distances, the closer you get, the larger gets that buddha - 31 or 32 stories high.
Amazing. Plus nice views from the foot of the buddha around the area.
Any many many buddhas around - initially planned with 1.000 buddhas, later extended to 10.000 buddha statues.
So if you are in the vicinity - go !
PS: I did not go in (you can enter the Buddha !), just spent time outside - to enter there is a fee I think.

it is a relatively new place, we want in the early morning, there was not yet a lot of sales activity on the way up to the hill, which was also nice. Here you see really big lying and standing buddha statues , also the view on the surrounding area is very nice.
Worth the visit

This place impressed me. I am not sure if everywhere I looked I felt like I was inside a travel brochure or just the immense size of the place. On the road in there are 500 Buddhas sitting under Bodhi trees on each side of the road (so you see 500 on the way in and 500 on the way out as the road splits). Then you go up the hill to the big standing Buddha and it totally overshadows you... climb up inside and there are very graphic pictures of the different levels of hell with the pictures getting less horrific the higher you climb. Not all levels were open when I was there but it was still enough. They appear to be installing a lift up the back of the Buddha so you don't have to walk the steps... although having traveled for a while in Myanmar steps just seem natural.

Walking down to the reclining Buddha it is hard to imagine that it too is huge. Hard to get the whole length into a photo. There is also a sitting Buddha of the road back down and they appear to be building a large sleeping Buddha as well.

Well worth the visit and a highlight of my trip to Myanmar.
