Good location, good food, friendly and efficient staff. Rooms adequate but nothing special and probably not worth paying for sea view because one cannot view much although back rooms open to road so a bit noisy. Free wi-fi around reception and bar/restaurant area but US $ 3 (Tan Shillings 5000) if you want it in the room -- don't bother as it does not work. This is the only hotel in Tanzania I have come across that operates a dual pricing policy -- US$ 90 for non-residents/no work permit on ocean side and TSh 90,000 (US$ 57) for residents: probably possible to argue and then negotiate a further discount. Well recommended.

I stayed in Tanga for 4 days but in a hotel not listed in this site, indeed it was a small but good hotel. I had two lunches and one dinner in Mkonge - all Indian cuisine, I would rate the food quality, taste and restaurant ambience as excellent. The restaurant has a sprawling clean lush green outdoor overlooking the Indian ocean, the hotel is situated on an elevated ground, you get a magnificent view of the sun set and rise, nice breeze, excellent location to sit relax and talk business in a soothing environment. Service was good, polite and responsive staff. Next time when I Tanga, would definitely stay here.

Location, location, location: Mkonge has it overlooking Tanga Bay with an excellent panoramic view. The grounds are broad and lovely, with a good variety of well planned flora. Also Ttractive is the regular visit of colobus monkeys that cavort in the trees and across the lawns.

This is a lovely place to eat and drink and watch the sun go down. Food was good, but the wine variable. The cellar could easily be improved with little effort.

The main bar is good for sport enthusiasts with two screens providing wide coverage, This attracts a good mix of clientele.

Staff were attentive polite and quick to respond. This was a return visit after an absence of three years, and this area has much improved in the interim.

Rooms were of a good size and gave good access to the grounds. Bathroom was OK with hot showers, but our shower basin leaked in to the room. Cleaning staff were helpful and attentive.

Our stayed provided good value for money: the Mkonge is a good place to relax and/or conference after a hot day working in the Tanga humidity.

Room Tip: Choose ground floor rooms for good view of gardens.

I was there for 3 nights and, the hotel crew is helpful, it is a good value for money, 1,5km from the central town, not far from the yatch club .

It so quiet there ( and in tanga in general ) that it was weird

but good hotel

The Mkonge is a solid hotel by Tanga standards. The bed is exceptionally comfortable. The rooms are clean, including the bathroom/shower. The AC is adequate. There are a couple of english speaking channels on TV. They have a high speed wireless connection on the patio, free of charge, with the same connection at 10K TZS per 100MB in your room. The staff are fairly friendly and speak limited English. The downside to the hotel is really poor food. I tried several different dishes and all of them were mediocre at best. The non-resident rate is too high for what you get. There are better value options for those here to relax. For those on business, pay the extra just to have reliable internet access. Go across the street for the best food in town.

Room Tip: Enjoy the ocean view in the mornings as you have breakfast on the back patio. Save about $10 if you...

As you approach the hotel you can't help being impressed with this wonderful colonial building (originally the Tanga Sisal Growers Club), with gardens down to the waterfront. Unfortunately the accomodation is in all in a soulless 1970's style annex and the rooms are in need of rennovation.
In terms of hospitality, this is, without doubt, the worste place of stayed at during 4 months in Tanzania, with most of the staff being grumpy, surley and unhelpful.
On the postive side, it's the only hotel inTanga with a decent swimming pool, which non guests can use for a Tsh5000 (£2) fee.

Room Tip: It costs an extra $10 for a sea view, but this is mainly obscured by trees, so have a look at the ro...

The outside appearance of this hotel is fantastic, but that's where it stops! We have stayed here a few times, only because we were warned off other hotels by some locals, but the place never changes. Apart from the cleaners and a couple of waiters, the staff are mostly unpleasant; the rooms are average but, I must say, clean; breakfast very average and other meals ordinary. It is nice to sit out on the grassed area overlooking the water. We ate at the Tanga Yacht Club which is very friendly and the meals delicious. We visited the new hotel, Nyumbani, and what a difference that is. We were shown over the upmarket accommodation by very very pleasant staff and will definitely make that our headquarters next time we are in Tanga. And, by the way, if you have vehicle problems, call in to Lal's Garage.
