We have just returned from an awesome holiday on Atata island in Tonga staying at the royal sunset island resort.
What can I say about the place except Fantastic. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children (12 and 5) and we stayed here for 7 days. The staff were amazing. Very friendly, played with our boys all the time. They were very attentive and caring. We ate marvelous food an a full board package and it was all exceptional. They have a great little bar serving the most amazing number of cocktails.
We stayed in a fale right on the beach and what a stunning beach too. They were servcied daily.
There is a lovely local village at one end of the island which you are welcome to visit
The island itself has no other facilities but what more could you need. We kayaked. ,swam ,snorkeled, went whale watching, ate well sipped cocktails, chatted to friendly staff and truely relaxed for the full 7 days and then were safely escorted back to the airport. What an amazing place. well recommended

Room Tip: they are all on the beach jut make sure it is a western facing fale for the sunsets

This really is an amazing place to stay and my only disapointment was we didn't stay longer!!!! We were originally going to stay for 1 week but changed our minds as we were travelling with a 10 and 3 year old and thought it may be too secluded and we were also a little worried that if the food wasn't good we would have no other options (what a mistake!!!!!).

The Fale's are excellent, spacious, clean, beach front and perfectly in keeping with the vibe on the resort. The beach is perfect for kids, very little waves or currents and we just let the kids play all day in the sea. The biggest compliment I can make is they have a perfectly acceptable pool but our kids never used it once.

The snorkelling trip was great, 40 mins of swimming in and amongst thousands of tropical fish with Clam shells the size of basketballs on the sea bed. Kayaks, wind surfs and the like are all in plentyful supply so we all had a good go on those.

And as everyone says the service and friendlyness of the staff is 1st rate, all staff are from the island and it helps with the authenticity of the place. Take a tour of the village, we visited the local school and churches etc.

All in all, nothing at all bad to say about Royal Sunset, we even got to see a whale from less than 50 Meters on the boat on the way home, a perfect end to a perfect couple of days

We booked for 3 nights and stayed for 7 - so that is a good indication of how special this place is! The boat trip over with the Atata Islanders was fun and we were made feel very welcome by our lovely hostess Kati. Our beachfront fale was spacious and comfortable - AND - we had hot water for showers and a comfortable bed for the first time since arriving in Tonga - bliss! We were lucky enough to be the the only guests for the first 3 nights of our stay so we enjoyed "room service" for our evening meals on the deck of our fale enjoying the "Royal Sunsets" - it was absolutely priceless! We had a great time out on the snorkelling trip (heaps of different fish) and my husband had a ball out on the windsurfer everyday at high tide. The food was tasty & plentiful and always served with a big smile by gentle giant & resident chef John. We were fortunate to enjoy the hospitality of Bruno (the owner) while we were there and to learn of the history of the Resort and his plans for the future. We had planned to go elsewhere for our last couple of nights but decided we would be hard pressed to find anywhere else as idylic as Royal Sunset - it certainly ticked all the boxes!

Room Tip: They are all good because they are ALL beachfront!

Atata Island is like stepping onto a little piece of paradise. The Resort was great and the fales were simple but very adequate for a "chill out" holiday. The staff could not do enough to please us and went out of their way to help any way they could - Cheers guys! I would recommend that you do take your own snacks as there isn't a shop on the island. Although the resort provided limited snorkeling equipment I would advise you to take your own if you have it. You should also take the time to do the aftenoon snorkeling trip provided by the resort as there is not alot of fish life close by the shore.
Am already planning my next years trip back to Sunset Resort Atata Island.

Room Tip: Fales on Western side are great - out of the wind.

Keti, Latu and Daniel were wonderful hosts, loved the band - voices like angels:) We stayed 5 nights. Church on Sunday was spectacular. We loved the peace and quiet and practically having the whole island to ourselves. Many laughs, loved the snorkelling. We swam with the humpback whales which was a magical experience - recommend it to everyone. Kava was interesting to drink :) The food was simple was good. We will be back next year for longer. Boats twice a day to the mainland if needed, boat trips out to the reefs for snorkelling. The water was stunning and very warm.

Room Tip: We were in a Western Fale which was perfectly adequate for what we needed.
