“Highest praise for this wonderful cottage”
Reviewed January 12, 2011

Our family of 5 (boys 17,19 and 21) stayed here for from December 22-25. It was a wonderful place to base for a Nelson visit. The Last Straw Cottage was one of the most well-appointed homes we have ever stayed. Just about every detail and need was covered, from fresh flowers, to fantastic breakfast foods (homemade muffins & bread, fruits, bacon, freshly laid eggs, and fresh squeezed juice). The kitchen and bathroom had everything you needed. Laundry room if needed. As already addressed in another review, there is only one bathroom (and separate toilet room) and it's located downstairs, but this no big deal for our family. Lots of books and games, free internet and tv, outside space to walk and play (great games of croquet in the backyard) and four bikes to ride around the neighborhood. It's rural and lovely -- woke to the sounds of cows, sheep and chickens. Easy drive to Nelson, Abel Tasman and other great spots. We loved our stay and would highly recommend a visit.

We found the Last Straw Cottage online and from the first contact the owners were very accomodating. For our 7 week stay we brought our twin 18 month old boys so as you can imagine needed a lot of "special help" that I doubt we would have gotten elsewhere. They helped us in so many ways - really took care of all our needs from cots to highchairs to a double stroller and toys. Helped us get a reasonably priced rental car and helped with other arrangements. Their hospitality didn't end there. Once we arrived there were extras all around - fresh flowers, wonderful muffins, homemade boysenberry candies, bread and more. The owners have been wonderfully helpful every step of the way. The cottage is absolutely beautiful and quaint and the landscape and yard perfect to lay out and read a book or to have the kids run around in a safe place. I would highly recommend the cottage, our favorite place to stay after traveling to many countries and visiting hundreds of B&B's.

We (family of 4) stayed here over Christmas in 2008 and it really is hard to fault.

Minor issues out of the way 1) bath/shower/toilet is downstairs so if you are older you might have to go up/down in the night as the beds are upstairs. 2) some might find it a little drive from Richmond / Nelson. Apart from these I can think of no reason why anyone would not want to stay if they are looking for beautiful, quiet, quality accomodation in the Nelson region.

Major plusses are the beauty and ambience of the house which is very pleasing to the eye both in and out along with the quiet garden with no neighbours or roads nearby. The house is also bigger than it appears in the photos; the outdoors is major plus with a small brook, lawn, outside dining, and lots of play areas and toys for children. The quality of the furnishings is high and the owners are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The owners also threw in a free horse riding session and visit to a local farm for the kids. Everything worked and it was all kept to very high standard.

Rabbit Island, Aniseed Valley, Richmond are all close and Nelson, Mapua, Ruby Bay and Kaiteriteri not much further.

Owervall one of the best places I have stayed in worldwide. I unreservedly recommend it.

I write this with some concern. If I tell everyone how wonderful this cottage is, you will book it at a time I want to stay there. Oh well here it goes. Stay here.

The beauty of both the house and the surroundings are amazing. We stayed for 4 nights in the early July and loved it. The house is very up to date, clean and cozy/comfortable. The beautiful wood throughout the house really makes it unique. The straw construction in the thick walls keeps it warm, unlike many other NZ accommodations, even on the frosty mornings of winter.

The host was wonderful and gave us the right amount of help, information, and privacy. Take a look at a few pictures and you will get an idea of why this is a wonderful place.

We stayed in Last Straw cottage in late Nov 2004 and it was the highlight of our 6 week trip through Asia and New Zealand. After being in so many hotels and cities the last straw cottage was a unique haven of tranquility.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the cottage is great for a romantic retreat but is also big enough to cater for family groups. Jon and Lynne provide lots of little welcoming treats eg home made muffins, chocolate fudge etc. They also provide a breakfast hamper which includes home made bread, bacon, smoked salmon etc.

We left behind by accident some bottles of New Zealand wine that we had collected on our wine tours around New Zealand and Lynne organised for them to be sent back to us in the UK. We really appreciated this great service and level of thought.
