Nice views from the Summit Road. Great cafes, restaurants and pubs at Lyttelton and Governors Bay. Take a ferry to Diamond Harbour and walk around this quiet little village. A friendly local might offer to give you a lift up the steep hill from the wharf.

Unfortunately Lyttelton township itself was badly damaged during the Canterbury earthquakes and there is little to see here, however the jewel in the crown of Lyttelton harbour is surely Diamond Harbour.
A pleasant 20 minute drive from the exit of the road tunnel ( turn right) or catch the ferry across from the port ( 5 minute ride) takes you to this unspoiled paradise. Pack a picnic lunch or visit the cafe in the township, take a walk around the edge of the clifftop with outstanding views of the harbour, fish off the wharf or simply relax in the peaceful surroundings. A day trip not to be missed.

Lyttleton township appears to be bouncing back slowly, after the tremendous damage this important port town received from the Christchurch earthquake.

Extremely sad to see the destruction of the Timeball Station and many other historic buildings, businesses and homes being devastated. The night we drove through the tunnel to Lyttleton for fish and chips, the port was very busy loading freight. Although no cruise ships are using Lyttleton as yet. The pop-up buildings are awesome and help to renew the town's former sense of vibrancy and normality.

We bought fish and chips from the portacom building located across from the harbour. The last time we visited Lyttleton this immediate area was buzzing. We'll be visiting again to help the town's ongoing re-establishment project in some small way. Our fish and chips were good!
