We have been meaning to dine her since it first opened. A double birthday celebration gave us the perfect excuse. Pre-dinner drinks at the cute bar next door was the perfect start to an amazingly differant evening out in Lyttelton.
Welcomed warmly by Christie we were seated at the only window table. The restaurant is simple in its decor, polished wooden floors, white walls perfect for small artworks and in the centre a still they use to create herbal concoctions. We have pre-arranged the 8 course degustation by telephone with Guilio and forgo the wine matches for a bottle of Black Estate Chardonnay and an organic beer for our youngest son.
An appertiser of the most delicious choux pastry arrives hot from the oven. Its amazing! A cheesy cloud of perfection.
Over the next two hours we feast on incredible food combinations. Each dish explained in detail. Edible herbs, leaves and flowers from the restaurants garden. Fish caught from the harbour. Foraged or local produce all lovingly prepared.
Standout dishes for me were Labne with baby broad beans misted with thyme. An silky smooth asparagus custard. Pumpkin gnocchi like no other I have tasted, heavenly light with an delicious cream sauce perfectly balanced with fresh herbs.
House made cracker pillows and sourdough punctuated the first half well.
We order a bottle of House of Ball 'The Merger' a blend of pinotage and tempranillo which is new to us and goes brilliantly well with aged beef with cauliflower that follows. Groper next and slow cooked Lamb neck with an intense spinach and potato puree.
Two desserts one of poached rhubarb followed by a house made ice cream. Both are brilliant. A lovely Semillion dessert wine for my husband and I and a Valdaspino for my eldest son rounds our evening off.
It's not cheap but worth every cent. Portions are perfect. The skill the innovated kitchen exhibits is what you are paying for. Service is sweetly attentive, informative and graceful. An evening to treasure.

At long last we have experienced a Roots degustation menu. The emphasis was on local food freshly and innovatively prepared. The attention to detail in the overall execution was remarkable. A table overlooking the chefs working in the kitchen was an added bonus. On the night we attended the food was a collaboration of Guilio and a chef visiting from Belgium. The staff were professional and friendly. Wine matches were excellent and there was a good selection and description of wines by the glass or bottle. We appreciate this was a more expensive meal, however this reflects the finesse and flavour of the total experience. We will definitely return to this small quieter boutique restaurant.

Roots has to be tried to be believed. A beautiful small, intimate restaurant with incredible garden, serving up degustation menus that would rival anything this side of the equator. Beautiful local ingredients, dishes created and served with passion and integrety - its run by Guilio and Christie a young couple who live locally and you can feel their philosiphy in everything that they do and present....
If you are looking for a special evening out you really dont need to look any further!

As an anniversary celebration, my partner booked us in for the 10 course degustation meal - but didn't inquire about the price per person! When we discovered that it was $125 pp ($190 with matched wines) we nearly had heart attacks but (as neither of us wanted to ruin the evening for the other and as we had been given some money by family which would just about cover it)we both put on a smile and decided this would be the one and only occasion we would experience such a thing! So, as to the meals - they were tiny, interesting, nicely presented, tasty (though often too salty) but only one out of 10(one of the dessert plates)drew gasps of delight from us both as we tasted it. We both agreed that for such an experience and cost, EACH dish should be capable of eliciting such a response?! Apart from the meals, the service was attentive but the environment (seating, dinnerware, atmosphere) was much better suited to the previous pizza restaurant than what has to be one of the most expensive restaurants in Christchurch! At the end of the evening we left feeling adequately fed but sick to our stomachs with guilt at spending on one meal a sum that would have fed a family of 5 for a week! Never again!
