“Olde World Charm Served with Great Food!”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

Hanmer Springs continues to surprise and so it was with Isobel's Restaurant in the Heritage Hanmer Springs Hotel.

We arrived at just after 6.30pm and the restaurant was warm and inviting. We were shown our table and the delightful waitress (from Argentina) explained the menu and the specials of the day.

So we started with a Langford Pinot Gris for her ($9 for a generous glass) and a Heineken for him ($9)

It was Groper pan fried and a Medallion of Pork for us as our choice and after the due period of cooking they arrived at our table beautifully presented. The meal sizes were just right; not too large as to be uncomfortable and not undersized to still be hungry at the end.

The pork came with kumara and the groper with stuffed prawns and both were delicious.

An interesting addition was the Winter menu which was a different selection of meals at lower prices to suit those guests with a different budget.

OVERVIEW
Groper $35
Pork Medallion $35
Total account for two people $97.00

VALUE FOR MONEY
Good and the Winter Menu even better value

SERVICE
Excellent from all people

COULD DO BETTER DEPARTMENT
Nothing

WOULD WE RETURN
Definitely

VERDICT
Good one Heritage Hotel Hanmer Springs. Top marks

“Average”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

We had high tea which was just ok. You either do high tea well or not. Heritage did it very badly. Yucky old chipped white cups, dry bread etc. Maybe the meals are nicer but as a place that advertises high tea as a service- very very average. Don't bother. Staff were nice as a positive.

“Charm, warmth and character”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Going out to dinner isn't just about the food, is it? Sometimes you want somewhere that's really warm, inviting, plush and friendly. We went to "Isobel's" at the Heritage Hotel and absolutely loved it. Pre-dinner drinks by the huge open fire gave us the opportunity to really, really relax and set the tone for a lovely evening. Deep carpet and crisp tablecloths mean conversations in the restaurant are a gentle hum not a background din. The staff were fabulous - friendly but not intrusive - and the food was great. It's at the higher end of the market in the area, but when the same prices are charges at some of the other local restaurants, why not treat yourself to something really classy!?

“Undiscovered Gem - Isobels at the Heritage”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

We visit Hanmer all the time but had not been to Isobels in the grand old Heritage for a very long time. Wow! What an undiscovered gem. Grand old worldly ambience, complete with white linen tablecloths, and large fireplace with comfortable seating at end of room. Loved the entree of pâté. The mains of venison and Molesworth Station beef fillet were exceptional. Friendly and attentive service. Couldn't fit in dessert! Our only complaints would be that they didn't promote this lovely restaurant more widely (including on the hotels own web site) and the wine list could benefit from a small 'cellar selection' section. Great night and we will be bringing friends back to experience Isobels for themselves.

“we were squashing flies all evening!”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

We brought our parents to Isobel's knowing that last time we visited we enjoyed it. However this time we were really surprised at how old and dated the dining room has become. It was really dark and the extremely dull lights didnt seem to help at all, all evening there were only 6 tables dining and for a Saturday that's pretty rubbish! We were sat next to a window that was covered in flies. We asked the waiter if he could sort them out as they were buzzing all the time and flying in our faces (so annoying!!) and he said we could move tables if we wanted-but that would mean away from the light of the window and we didnt want that as it was so dark. So we stayed where we were and killed flies all evening-lovely! I was disappointed to find the only vegetarian main meal was exactly the same as when we were last here in July, could do with either adding more vegetarian mains or changing it more regularly, its hard enough trying to find something suitable for me to eat but when its the same again 6 months later that's just lazy!
