“Expensive and not very good”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Stayed one night with a campervan on a powered site. Well spaced-out plots in large, well-maintained grounds with numerous specimen trees. Within walking distance of Hanmer Springs town with several eateries and shops. Quite expensive and not too good. Also required to pay extra for timed showers. Well-worn machines in laundry room and more expensive than other campsites. Rather disappointed with Hanmer Springs as a whole and will give it a miss in the future. Not all it is cracked-up to be!

Stayed here with family and children just before Xmas and had a lovely time. Really friendly owners made it so easy. The facilities were very clean and nice to use, even had a BBQ area for hire at a cheap rate, great for a big group to get together for dinner.
Would recommend highly to families with kids.

We liked this holiday park as the spots were big with lots of trees, and it is not far from the main attractions in the village. Showers are 50 cents (which is a bit annoying), but it is near a public park, so I understand the owner's reason for charging for the showers. Small kitchen, but wasn't overly crowded when we were there. Nice quiet place in Hanmer Springs. Overall great value.

Do not take any notice of the negative reviews for this park. We arrived at the same time as four other groups and check in was seamless. Our tent site was lovely. All facilities very clean. Showers 50cents for 6 minutes and worth it for cleanliness. Mini golf is fun and for $5.00 cheapest in town. 10 minute leisurely walk to town and thermal pools. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks to camp team :)

This is probably the rudest greeting I've ever experienced anywhere, which makes it sting all the more considering the high level of friendliness and hospitality of Kiwis. As you walk into reception there is a buzzer that goes off in quite a lengthy fashion. Three of us each walked in independently from our car, triggering the buzzer on the doorsteip. My son tripped slightly over the high step, setting it off for a fourth time. After quite a wait the receptionist came out with a face like thunder and told us not to do deliberately set off the alarm and that she was finishing her meal and we were making her choke as she couldn't swallow her meal comfortably. She was angry and unpleasant. I told her that we hadn't done anything intentionally other than walk through the door one at a time. She walked out and then returned to (somewhat) backtrack and apologize if she had been sharp. Sorry but nastiness of the outburst was totally unnecessary, particularly as we showed up at exactly the time that they had predicted we would arrive. Perhaps not a great time to be planning your meal? The grounds are well kept and the apartment is very clean and spacious but the tone that runs through the camp makes it the unfriendliest place I have stayed in NZ. Everywhere there are large notices forbidding something or reminding you of check-out time - eg. non-campers using the toilets will be fined, no cooking in the units etc. If you are booked there make sure you all run in through the door together and check out on the dot. Shame that the mini-golf we were hoping to play doesn't open till 1pm.

Visiting with our camper van, we were very pleased with the site. The pitch sizes are generous and shady (needed to day as it is in the high 20s C!). To one side, we have a view over the lush green rugby field between us and the town (600m gentle flat walk) and behind us we have pine trees and mountain peaks.

The lady owner was most welcoming and helpful and did everything to ensure our 2 night stay would be pleasant. The town boasts a magnificent thermal pool complex that I most strongly recommend, also the attached Spa facility is a really luxurious treat to enjoy.

The site has all the facilities that you need and the showers, kitchen and toilets are all clean and modern. The only 'gentle grumble' that I have is that you have to pay for a shower (only a Dollar) and pay 4 Dollars for the use of the BBQ - neither of which charges we have had to pay on any other sites.

My partner and I stayed here for a night as the location was perfect for parking our campervan and walking to the resort. The lady on arrival was very kind and accommodating and showed us where to park our van. There was a resident there who always visits this park every year from England and he helped us with a power issue and even gave us a spare heater for the van (to keep as he was going home in a week). The management and guests were lovely. The location was perfect if you like a short walk to and from town which my partner and I do. The facilities were shining and the service was excellent. I work in the tourist industry so am very focused on where I stay and I would rate Pines Holiday Park 10/10! We're already looking forward to going back....
