“Ripper @ Rippinvale”
Reviewed May 3, 2014

Dear Helen & John,
Our sincere thanks for hosting us during my brothers wedding in Hanmer. Special occasion called for a special retreat, and Ripponvale was the perfect base camp. This is the 2nd time iv had the privilege of staying at your beautiful property - bringing my folks back this time speaks for itself. The attention to detail, the pampering, hot tub under starlight, & most of all the breakfasts... words can't describe how tasty Helen's fresh pastries are! You guys are 1st class & deserve to be #1 on Trip Advisor. Thanks again, and we look forward to hosting you in our part of the world sometime soon. The Sproulls

From the very first moment of arriving at Rippindale, our hosts Helen and John made us feel welcome and pampered at their beautiful property. One of the things I'm finding out about boutique Kiwi B&B's is the efforts the owners go to in creating a wee bit of paradise in their homes and gardens - Ripponvale certainly delivers here. Guests are free to explore both the naturally landscaped open areas and more cosy corners of the gardens - which also provide much of the fresh produce that goes into their amazing food! The spa is tucked into a secluded spot not far from the studio units and looked great. We didn't get round to taking a dip in it (all hot pooled-out from visiting the Thermal Springs!) but I'm sure it would have been just as well maintained and clean as everything else.
Arriving early evening meant that - once we'd been shown the way across the driveway to our studio by Helen and Lily the cat - we were served home-made canapes and matching wine whilst Helen got us settled-in, helped us with a few tips about Hamner, made a dinner reservation for us and made the arrangements for breakfast the following morning. One of the highlights of a stay at Rippinvale are the stunning home-cooked breakfasts - definitely just about the best we've had anywhere. The detail and care put into everything served to us: creamy porridge, poached fruit, home made jam, freshly-baked pastries and bread... My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Served from 9am as well - how civilised!
The studios themselves have been designed to offer a good degree of privacy - even with being directly joined to each other and to the owner's home - and maximise the natural morning sun. If it hadn't been a clear, crisp late-April morning, we'd have definitely had breakfast on the wee terrace at the front. The unit has an open area accessed from patio doors onto the terrace with dining and sitting space, and a kitchenette stocked with the usual bits & pieces (including a varied selection of real teas and coffee). At the back is the en-suite bedroom - super comfy queen bed in our unit (the other is a king). Again kept beautifully clean, bed turned down, warm and homely. The bathroom was also immaculate.
We're really looking forward to another stay during the ski season - maybe burn off some of those breakfasts!

We had a two night break at Rippinvale and we're warmly greeted by Helen and Lily their beautiful Burmese cat. The Suites are very private but very well appointed and comfortable. Helen is a wonderful cook and delighted us each day with different canapés and wine before we went out to dinner and an amazing breakfast served in our Suite each morning. Although there are no mountain views the Suites are well positioned in the well tended grounds and make for an ideal retreat getaway.

Thank you Ron and Fiona for your review. It was lovely to meet you both and we are pleased that Rippinvale was able to afford you both the R&R you needed !
Just a comment about "no mountain Views" however, It is a bit difficult to get away from mountain views in this beautiful alpine village and no less from Rippinvale. To the south of your suite are the leslie hills and when enjoying the garden it is hard not to be wowed by the open and unobscurred views of the magnificent Amuri range.

What can I say except over a two week trip around New Zealand for our honeymoon we found this to be our best accommodation. Helen and John were great hosts, very welcoming and there to help out with any requests. The food was superb and there was more than enough too keep us going. The bed was the comfiest either of us had slept on and the room was clean and cosy. We enjoyed walks around the beautiful gardens and an evening spa. If we ever end up in NZ again we will definitely revisit and we would recommend Rippinvale to anyone. Thanks again Helen and John for helping to make our honeymoon just that bit extra special.

Regards Phil & Mel

Absolutely wonderful stay in hanmer springs, glad we did our research and came across this gem. Would definately recommend to all, fabulous friendly hosts who could not have been more welcoming and helpful. From making recommendations for dinner and confirming reservations to informing us of lovely local walks it couldnt have been made easier. John and Helen could not have made our stay any more enjoyable, the homemade breakfasts of garden picked berries and freshly baked croissants and bread, also squeezed juice and lovely toasted muesli etc. The gorgeous homemade afternoon canapes with perfectly matched glasses of wine and the locally made fudge left on our pillow after returning from dinner. We really could not rate this place any higher. Location is close to the centre so easy flat 10-15 minute walk will help digest dinner. Their home is set in lovely surroundings and a dip in the spa pool just finishes it off. Thanks again Helen and John, we will definately see you in the not too distant future! Wishing you a great year.....

To travel half way round the world for a second visit says it all. After passing through for one night last year, these four nights enabled me to gain a much better insight into Hanmer and its surroundings as well as saviour the delights of Rippinvale Retreat. I love the proposition, your own suite with silver service breakfast providing on the one hand that all important privacy and Helen and John providing a full concierge service and that all important crucial local knowledge on the other.

They are also warm and emotionally engaging making you feel at home instantly. Hanmer offers the famous springs but there is some thing naturally recreational about the vibe of the area rather than being overtly touristy. I could quite easily see me returning for a third time to sample more of the wonderful opportunities and the unique experience which is Rippinvale Retreat

We had charming hosts who made us completely at home including Lillie their Burmese cat. The breakfasts served in our suite, from an array of organically home grown fruits and berries, with home baked croissants, bread and condiments full of innovation and individuality, were the best we have ever had. The decor and setting were in keeping with the entirely tranquil environment. We will be back for sure.
