What a great find in Hanmer Springs. We usually book accommodation at Greenacres in Hanmer Springs because it takes dogs, but this time we wanted somewhere smaller and, dare I say it, cheaper.

We settled on the Chalets Motel, persuaded mostly by its cost ($112 per one-bed chalet/night) and that it was on the slopes overlooking Hanmer so we'd get a good view.

The location is great, up a steep gravel drive. All the chalets are spaced out and have their own outdoor areas. Ours, Chalet No. 5, was a perfect location. No chalets in front of us and a lovely secluded deck and garden area with seating and a washing line (essential for those spa-dampened towels!).

On entering I was immediately struck by the cleanliness - the shower base was steel and I could see my face in it! The kitchen, too, was spotless as was the linen and towels provided. Great start.

I then noticed how quiet it was in the chalet and, sure enough, it was the double-glazing. It was warm, too! Both luxuries in a Kiwi chalet!

There was Sky satellite with 40 channels and a comfy sofa to sit on. The chalet also had a DVD player and free use of DVD's from the office - some great titles there.

Sure, the shower is small but you're only there to eat, sleep and shower! It was perfectly adequate and cosy for the two of us.

The chalet's small, private deck looks out across Hanmer and affords a fab view of the mountain range with stunning sunsets and beautiful sunrises. It was ever-changing and you could sit outside for hours. The stars at night are wonderful, too.

It's a short walk from the chalets to the hot springs and town centre along a quiet road bordering the golf-course.

We will definitely return to this chalet. As locals we go to Hanmer a few times a year to relax and unwind in the hot springs. Thanks Chalets Motel for giving my husband and I the place we needed to relax and unwind.

We were 2 couples and stayed in Chalets motel for one night in August, right in the middle of a busy winter season in Hanmer Spring. We each hired a one-bedroom chalet, and ended up getting chalets 2 and 3 (chalet 3 is actually 2-bedroom). Price was reasonable at $110 each, we just booked them directly with the motel through its website.

Overall it was an average stay I have to say...the location was ok, about 600 metres to the hot spring, but the private road leading up to the motel was not done properly and therefore quite dusty (might be temporary). Host was quite nice, warm greeting and check in was smooth. The chalets themselves are not real chalets (i.e. not all wood). Slightly dated, but still quite pleasant. However the three things that I would like to point out are:
- its not quiet. Middle of the night there were a few times that it all of a sudden got very very noisy, sounded like helicopter right above your roof. Never found out what it was but it happened at 11pm-2pm, and has disrupted our sleep;
-the shower was very average - not enough pressure.
-heater was very noisy.

Also the host advised that towel was available for hire at $2 each - as compared to the pool hiring them out for $5. While $2 is not a lot, I would have thought towel should be complementary, given that people go to Hanmer mainly to go to the hot pool.

Overall I think it's an ok motel, but there seemed to be a few others around that are better. I like Hanmer Spring and this is at least the 6th visit - but I probably will try somewhere else next time.
