We stayed at this YHA on a trip aound Nne Zealand. It had an excellent location and l would recommend hamner Springs.this was our 2nd visit to this little town. The Yha was okay, but the kitchen smelt as there were no extracor fans in it.the hostle alos did not have kitchen and food handling rules evident in the Franz Josek and Wanaka hostels.Overall, the kitchen was not comfortable for food preparation except of the most basic kind.the dining facilities in the kitchen were also quite disappointing.

We are responding to this review as the new owner/operators of Kakapo Lodge. We took over the Kakapo on the 29th of April. This review although dated 17th July was for a stay sometime in April.

We have made several improvements since this review, including the cleaning of the kitchen, and upgrading facilities. Comment from a guest staying with us today - "We have been travelling for two months and staying in YHA's and this is the cleanest that we have been to."

We are getting lots of positive feedback since taking over, and look forward to hosting your stay in Hanmer Springs.

Thanks - Jackie and Phil

A typical YHA set-up with well-equipped, big kitchen, comfortable, open-space sitting/TV room (with aquarium), functional, clean dorms and friendly staff, in walking distance of hot pools.

This YHA enjoys a rather spacious setting overall, which sometimes seems almost school-like, and kitchen, dorms and hallways, although spacious, well-kept and spotless, feel rather sterile and bare. But what the place lacks in decoration in these areas, it makes up for with good service, cleanliness, a quiet atmosphere, a lovely little terrace and a comfortable sitting room. And the price ain’t bad either!

The dorm room:
We stayed in a 6-bed dorm room on the ground floor. Beds were singles (no bunks) with heavy wooden frames and wonderfully firm and high-quality mattresses. We were the only ones in the dorm room at that time (although it was high season), but even if it had been fully booked, it would still not have felt crowded as beds stood quite far apart. The room also had two windows which adequately ventilated the room.

Facilities:
In terms of facilities, there was a laundry room with a few washers and dryers (3 each as far as I can remember, but not sure). The sitting room, an open-plan area shared with reception and 2 internet terminals, was very big and spacious. Bathrooms were spotless, and the kitchen was well-equipped, big for hostel standards and included a dining area with 6-8 tables.

Cleanliness:
Overall cleanliness was excellent (kitchen, hallways, bathrooms, sitting room, dorm).

Staff:
Staff was very welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Atmosphere:
This does not seem to be a party hostel, at least it was not when we stayed (February 2010). The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, possibly due to the town (famous for its hot springs).

Location:
Hanmer Springs is not a big town, hence most accommodation will be fairly close to the centre. The springs were in walking distance.

Overall:
I’d recommend this hostel to anyone wanting to stay in a quiet, reasonably priced budget / hostel accommodation in Hanmer Springs.

The hostel is located quite near to the 'central area' of Hamner Springs. Parking space is available, and outside is a nice courtyard. Our double room was cheap, but very basic and old as well, and the bed was pretty small. I rather pay a little bit more, and have a little bit more furnishment (like a mirror, chairs, towels, some more space to dry wet bathing clothes and towels) and a more comfortable bed. Kitchen was spacious and clean and there was enough storage space in the fridges. Even though there was a large group of boys in the hostel, it was very quiet at night.

Overall, ok hostel if you're ok with 'basic', but we like a little more 'luxury'.

My husband and I stayed here with our 5 year old son for one night on our trip through south island. Staff were nice and accommodating and the place was quite clean and quiet. I think occupancy was low but still, it seemed well run and efficient. A nice courtyard BBQ area was available, though poorly lit. The location was good and well marked with lodge sign. Would stay again for sure. Hanmer Springs is a cute town and the thermal spas are a must for the whole family. Skip the horseback riding with Hanmer Horses though, the female owner was unbelievably rude (and for no reason, really) and the male owner gruff and unconcerned--so much so I honestly don't know why they are in this business.

We stopped over here one night during a long drive from Franz Josef to kiakoura in June 2008.

The hostel was a little difficult to find in the dark as Hanmer Springs has little in the way of street lights. look for the Kakapo Lodge sign rather than the YHA sign.

We booked a double room which was very cheap at NZ$50. As the place was so quiet the manager bumped us up to a family room to give us more space. The room was basic and very cold but clean and tidy. There was only the under floor heating which really in mid winter was not enough. Towels are not provided so bring your own.

Other facilities were good including the kitchen and bathrooms. Showers were very hot and make you want to stay in there! If you get cold there is an open fire in the lobby.

There was plently of car parking space and we experienced no problems.
