I have stayed at Toorak Manor half a dozen times, but this is the first time since it has been under new ownership.
The location, right near Hawksburn Station and near Chapel Street is fantastic and the convenient parking and free wi-fi are very attractive.
The building is quite charming, the staff are very friendly and the price of accommodation is more than reasonable, but..............and here is the problem......
I don't think that I have ever stayed in a room that is as filthy as my room was. I seriously doubt that the room has EVER been vacuumed as the filth on the floor, skirting boards, architraves and power points and switches had to be seen to be believed. The area around the bedhead was completely covered in hair and dandruff and goodness knows what else. Really quite shocking. Apart from that, the room and bathroom are nicely laid out and just as one would expect in a property of this age and price range. But the carpet in the room really needs to be cleaned properly.
The breakfast room is lovely and has huge windows which allow the sun to stream in.....revealing windows that again, appear not to have been cleaned in a very long time. They were filthy. How the proprietors could not notice this and attend to it is beyond me. So obvious and also obvious how much better it would look if it were clean. It would make your time in that room a real highlight. Also, most of the chairs in the room need to be reupholstered and sprung. Guests sit down only to search for a chair that won't have their rear end in a jam.
The breakfast itself is modest but quite good. More than satisfactory, but the manner in which it is presented comes across as very mean. There is a decent range of cereal and muesli, but the cherries, peaches and yoghurt are arranged on a ridiculous tiered stand with tiny wooden spoons like spatulas that make procuring a single piece of fruit like a game where you are rewarded if you successfully transport one piece of tinned fruit to your bowl. These shallow dishes had to be replenished frequently which meant that you had a 50/50 chance of there being anything there when you wanted it. Why not just have a decent quantity there in the first place?
I have a soft spot for this place because it has so much going for it, but it is clear that the cleaners are not supervised and a few small changes at breakfast would go a long way.
If location and price are more important to you than hygiene, I would certainly recommend Toorak Manor, but until I read reviews here where there is evidence that the areas in need of improvement have been addressed I will be staying elsewhere.
