“Kept us sane in Mancora”

We spent a week here after booking another hostel which turned out to not be what we expected. We chose this one as it was away from the noisy town and had lovely grounds. The place was very clean and the owner spoke good English. It was overpriced and the breakfast was not up to much but there are lots of other places to eat. Yeah, the beds weren't great and sometimes the dog barked but the noise of the ocean and the fan soon drowned him out. We had a power failure and while mending the line the internet cable was cut and took 3 days to mend. The owner was most upset. Her attention to detail in design and decoration was superb. We had to walk to town to use the internet as we were having a major problem with our bank. This, of course, was not her fault. Because of our problems this place was a haven in an otherwise very unhappy week.

We stayed in this hotel for 1 week, really nice rooms and toilet, really clean and great swimming pool and access to the beach, nice food but a bit overpriced I think. The bed wasn't great, they put two beds together to make a big one and for a couple that's uncomfortable. The noises from the dogs could start very early but luckily we got that just one morning, we had a cat fight outside of our room door tho! Very noisy and I saw the blood in the morning outside of our room door. One night before leaving the hotel, the room in beside us had a party until 4am, they were soo noisy and even people that weren't staying at the hotel were invited, we complained about this to the manager and she apologised and said that unfortunately they couldn't do anything about it. The owners are very nice people unfotunately they couldn't manage this situation. Another thing they should improve is housekeeping, the room wasn't clean properly everyday, seems like they didn't clean the toilet at all and they just leave one toilet roll per day and If you didn't finish the toilet roll they won't even put one more in case you ran out of toilet roll, I remenber looking for the housekeeping girl to ask her for one toilet roll. The staff are really nice and friendly, I don't remenber her name but the girl that normally is at the reception desk is amazing, she is very friendly, very nice to talk to and always makes sure you have a nice time. She does quite a lot at the hotel. The other girl I can't remenber her name either, she is at the restaurant at breakfast time she is great and she pays attention to detail all the time. We had a good stay in this hotel despite problems.

We stayed here in late May/ early June whilst backpacking for 6 months around South America. It had newly opened; with the pool only having been finished the week before. The room was a bit of a 'splurge' by our backpacking standards - at $55 USD p/night, but well worth it.
PROS:
Brand new - Comfortable, luxurious rooms (by backpacking standards). Roomy bathrooms. Excellent balcony with ocean views. Wifi (limited access). Room fridge & mini bar (though highly recommend filling mini bar with your own purchases from town - far better value!). Great pool & deck chairs. Lovely manicured grounds. Friendly staff. Private beach chairs & umbrellas. Excellent location only 5/10 min walk along beach to town - providing easy access but enough distance to drown out the noise of the parties at the large hostels in the centre.
CONS:
Very basic breakfast - we would expect more for the price of the accommodation. Very pricey drinks & food in their bar/restaurant, which is a shame because it would otherwise be a great place to enjoy a drink or meal. Noise travels at night, especially when the owner/manager decides to party with her friends outside at 1am! Wifi only works on balcony or in common areas.
RECOMMENDATION:
Ask for a room price w/o breakfast - and stroll along the beach each morning to 'Green Eggs and Ham' (recommended in Lonely Planet) for an exceptional, great value breakfast or brunch ... we should know, we went daily (at least once!!!).
OVERALL:
Excellent. We'd love to go back and will definitely recommend. I hope they can maintain the standard of accommodation and service - because as with all things South American, it's one thing to open a 'luxurious' accommodation and another to maintain it! Also, as with previous reviewer, not sure why they call themselves an 'eco-lodge'?!

The location is on the beach, which is nice, but there are many hotels here on the beach. Every night there was a dog that barked from 4am until 9am everyday. The bed is big, but it is actually 2 full beds put together, which makes for an uncomfotable sleeping experience. The mini bar was only refilled once during a 5 day stay. My towel was only replaced once. The head of the staff was friendly before i paid for the room. Aftrwards she was very unpleasant. THe restaurant is overpriced. You can get a much better meal at a better price within walking distance. If you want to waste your money and have an experience you won´t foget for the wrong reasons, then stay at this hotel.

Even though this place is a bit on the expensive side for the country ($55 for a double), we enjoyed staying here a lot. The service is great, staff is very attentive and professional, the place is exceptionally clean, the pool is beautiful and the rooms are very comfortable with balconies looking over the sea. The best thing is you are right on the beach and since they only have 8 rooms, it is a quiet, intimate hotel. Two minusses are that the double rooms come with two separate matresses (put together, but still, it's not quite the same) and the breakfast is too minimalistic for the quality and price of the hotel. However, in our opinion Casa Mediterranea is a very good choice.
(...why it's called "eco-resort" is still unclear to us though)

We travelled to Máncora to spend a little time relaxing by the beach and Casa Mediterranea was a great place to do this. The hotel is directly on the beach and there are lounge chairs and umbrellas available for guests to use on the sand.

The rooms were spotless and included cable tv (not that you're going to watch much when you're by the sea!). There is wifi available but isn't that reliable from the rooms. The rooms are a little cramped, I think they all have either three singles or a double (two singles put together) and a single. They could probably do with keeping a couple of the rooms as just doubles thereby giving people a little more space. There are only 8 rooms on the premises so it's a lovely small place to stay. We could hear a lot of noise from the family staying in the room above us though, the walls and floors/ceilings aren't very thick, but as it's a small, family kind of place this wasn't really a problem. There is a small bar fridge in the rooms which we found useful, and a safe. Unfortunately the safe isn't actually fixed into the cupboard, so if you were to store valuables in it it would be a pretty easy target for a thief to pick up! We locked it and hid our valuables elsewhere in the room.

The biggest disappointment for us had to be the shower. We were on the ground floor, so we expect that we had better water pressure than upstairs, but it was apalling. The shower looks fantastic, big area and a huge shower head, but the pressure really was so bad that you almost had to run around to get wet. Also the temperature was completely inconsistent. I really expect a decent shower for $55 per night.

The other thing to mention is that the service is incredibly slow, friendly... but SLOW! Cocktails took 20 minutes to make, and we were the only people in the bar. They also have a happy hour list (still significantly more expensive than elsewhere in town, but it's nice to be able to sit on the lounges on the beach at sunset drinking cocktails!), but the first night we were there they had run out of ingredients, so we didn't have a choice, bear in mind the 'choice' is still usually only 3 drinks.! Checking in and checking out took an inordinate amount of time. We weren't that bothered as we didn't plan to do anything there other than relax, but it did raise the blood pressure a little on occasion.

Oh, the other disappointment was breakfast. A 'continental' breakfast is included in the price which consists of either two slices of toast or two bread rolls. This was fine. It also advertised that you got a 'juice'. Unfortunately you don't get to choose a fresh juice from the menu, you just get what you're given. I asked for something other than papaya juice and ended up being charged for the apple juice that I was given (they didn't tell us at the time we would have to pay). The coffee for two was only enough for one cup. I decided to pay for a fruit salad, which was incredibly overpriced as it only had apple, pineapple and papaya (despite the fact I'd been told there was no pineapple for an alternative to the disgusting papaya juice served).

Despite the disappointments, we did enjoy our time there and it was very relaxing, but I don't think I'd pay $55 per night to stay again.
