“The best location but wasn't made to feel welcome”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

If you get a room looking onto the ocean the spot couldn't be better. However, there are rooms at the back with only cold water which cost the same. I paid 60 soles for a single room. The sun loungers are within the hotel which is great as you have a fabulous view and can use wifi there.

The rooms are basic with three beds so great if you're in a group. Service is non existent really, you are left on your own. The man who runs it is pretty friendly ( I speak Spanish) but his wife a bit of a sour puss. She only smiled at me once in a whole week I was there and made me feel really unwelcome. Don't leave your keys with them as often there is nobody there and they'll be left unattended.

It's touch and go about noise. I had some peaceful nights but Ham & Eggs started a raucous party at 1am one night... Other nights drunk people pass by the beach shouting. Other than that the position can't be beaten in Mancora beach, namely because of being able to watch excellent surfers all day right from your sun lounger.

The yoga classes are great for all levels and the teacher who is a lovely American woman is so friendly. For surf classes Pilar is good but make sure you get her alone and not one of her helpers if you are a beginner.

The sunsets are stunning in Mancora, the light just beautiful. Las Pocitas is another lovely beach a half hour walk away( when tide is low). The town is a bit dirty with lorries wizzing by. It is not the Caribbean but a lovely place all the same.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the ocean... The ones at the back don't make it worth your while staying here.

We spent 10 days at the Del Wawa (room 11, over the alleyway, in the garden). It was the largest room we had in Peru, always hot water. The beachside is great: sand, all sorts of sunbeds, hammocks etc. The place itself is quiet, clean. The staff leaves you alone, but answers friendly if you ask for something (we speak Spanish). And if you want to go surfing: that's the place
There are a few drawbacks: mosquitos are a general plague in all green places in Mancora, we fought them (in the room and in the streets) with spray. The noise in different bars and restaurants is - at least sometimes - terrible. So it is unpreventable that the del Wawa inherits some of it.
We were not very enthusiatic about the breakfast (which starts only at 8:30, sundays later), but the "Green Eggs and Ham" around the corner offers a nice selection and is a resonable alternative (startting at 7:00 and if you select a table close to the Del Wawa, you may use Del Wawas WLAN)

French owned hotel right at the beach in the centre of Mancora

Pros:
- good location
- nice room interior

Cons:
- although we made a reservation nobody knew about it (fortunately got a room anyway)
- staff is pretty unfriendly and seems not really interested in the guests
- to get food / drinks in the restaurant you have to go to the kitchen to order it, since nobody looks out for guests
- prices for food / drinks significantly higher then in surrounding places
- owners seem to be there for the surfing only, without caring about the hotel / restaurant
- floor in our room was so dirty that you got black feet after a single step on the floor
- construction site around (hammering noises all day)
- although wifi in the room is advertised, it was virutally not available in our room (at the back side)
- unlike stated in lonely planet not all rooms are on the beach side

Would not go there again

Everything about this place was horrible:

1. Showed up and the receptionist was too stoned to think. Took half an hour to figure out if there were rooms available.

2. Prices are in dollars and a very high exchange rate is given for soles. Hello this is Peru!

3. Receptionist is unfriendly and needs to change careers. Not a friendly person. Rude about the smallest things. Speaks no English.

4. The food is overpriced. There is horrible breakfast menu.

5. Check out is at noon but the cleaning lady will nock on the door all morning making it impossible to sleep.

6. There is little privacy. My room was missing a curtian... Everybody could see in. You can hear everything people are saying in the rooms next door. Very clearly!!

8. Was missing lightbulbs . Fan was broken. Toilet wouldn't flush. Basics.

9. Beds are horrible. Only a foam mat on top of a concrete platform. No springs. Hips and shoulders always pressed against the cement. Mosquitoes are bad.

10. My camera was stolen from my room. Nearly 1000 pictures gone! Very very sad.

10. Last bu

First the positives:

1. Great location, right on beach near to surf breaks.
2. Sun loungers on beach
3. On-site Yoga
4. Good-sized rooms.
5. Strong wi-fi on loungers but not room
Then the negatives:

1. Got wrong date for our booking so had no idea we were arriving.
2. When we booked we asked for a ocean-front room but were dumped out the back.
3. Receptionist speaks no English and struggles with broken Spanish. to the point that asking for clean towels (in spanish) was an ordeal.
4. Tried to charge us $5 per person per night more than agreed in email booking confirmation.
5. No hot water in room.
6. Restaurant a real dissappointment. Portions were tiny, quality was low and prices were high. Ate at restaurant for lunch and breakfast regretted doing so on both occasions. Next door is GREEN EGGS & HAM restaurant where food is cheaper and better while portions are much larger and staff are much friendlier. The same goes the excellent Mexican place around the corner (aji's)
7. Yoga instructor failed to turn up one evening and no-one informed the 7-guests who sat waiting.
8. No flywire or mosquito nets/coils in rooms and rooms very stuffy with windows closed.

Overall it felt like the owners were there to surf and the running of the hotel was an afterthought.

We saw owners eat in the Mexican restaurant - which is always busy - where the portion sizes were easily double and the prices were less so they obviously can see how a good restaurant should be run.
