“Nice hotel, Fantastic views”
Reviewed September 16, 2010

As others have mentioned, the surrounding area near the hotel was a bit of a turn off. You'll find layers of graffiti, crumbling homes, stray animals and wandering people. I was more than hesitant and wondered if we made a poor decision to stay at Luquillo Beach.

When we arrived at the hotel, we expressed our concerns to Damien, the front desk clerk. He explained there was poverty everywhere in Luquillo and assured us that the area was safe. He did manage to put our mind at rest and he showed us to our room. On the way, we spotted a huge iguana, enjoying the noon day sun.

The room was fine - it was clean and well maintained. The king sized bed was roomy, although the sheets were scratchy and the mattress uncomfortable. The balcony overlooked the water and the view was spectacular. The complimentary breakfast was great and they also sold water & beer downstairs (although you could walk to the corner store a block away for cheaper beer). Damien also gave us some handouts of the Rainforest and the local places to go for food.

We stayed two nights - on the Friday night, I was awoken at midnight by children literally screaming at the tops of their lungs, while hanging out on the beach. The night before had been peaceful and quiet -- so maybe it was because it was *officially* the weekend?

All in all, the hotel itself was fine... although I didn't sleep as well as I would have preferred.

We had a great time enjoying the wonderful beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful in making our stay an enjoyable experience. We really enjoyed those variety of breakfasts each day. Also enjoyed the selection of restaurants within walking distance from our hotel. Manager Capt. Sheri was very good at recommending places to visit and we enjoyed her joining us on our excursion to Monkey Island.
We would recommend staying at Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn and we look forward to our next trip to Luquillo. Thanks for all your hospitality.

I traveled w/ my daughter and her friends, college grads. This was our first trip to Puerto Rico and to Luquillo, eastside. We found the staff, Maria, Daimen and kitchen staff, very helpful and knowlegeable about Luquillo and Fajardo. We stayed in the Green room which was great and uses solar power; 2 rooms, A/C, TV, sm frig, coffee maker, fans, patio w/ tables and chairs, upper deck. The continental breakfast is great, fruits, toast, bagels, juice, coffee, tea, water or order a hot breakfast that's the special of the day, free inter-net and phone use, free beach towels and beach chairs. Breakfast area has deck w/ hammocks and lounge beach chairs w/ a room that has all kinds of informational pamphlets, maps of the area, restuarants, hikes, tours, etc.. They also have gated parking. Check out Boardriders Rum Shack down the street, great eats..

If you want to stay outta the city and hang w/ the locals, this is the place to stay. I must add that when you are driving to the hotel the neighboring area doesn't look that great. It's an older part of town but use your common sense about your personal self or belongings. You will find it's not as bad as it seems.

Hiked El Yunque, did a snorkel tour, swam in the surf, it was the best 4 days in Puerto Rico. We stayed 5 days in Rincon before coming to Luquillo. Aloha from Hawaii

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel and loved it. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts (included in the cost) were outstanding. The place is right on the beach and we went to bed each night to the sound of waves crashing. It is a 10 minute drive to the rainforest. Great for families or anyone who wants an affordable, clean place to stay.

I should start by saying that we hated Puerto Rico and would never recommend it for a vacation spot. That said, if you end up there, and want to go to a decent beach not too far from San Juan, then Luquillo is a good bet. And if you are in Luquillo, the Sunrise is a great place to stay. It's nothing fancy, but the folks who run it are great. Really solid customer service. Great breakfasts.

The rooms are small and dated, but have nice balconies with ocean views (over the parking lot and a street). The bed was a little soft, but pretty comfortable. The A/C made a weird noise, but worked well. Overall it was okay, and again, probably your best bet for that area if you don't want to stay at a resort.

The location can't be beat, either. It's across from the surf beach and a 5 minute walk to great swimming beaches.

I do want to note that the area around the hotel looks really sketchy. We went to buy a bottle of wine at the local corner store, and it reminded me a bit of the inner city of LA. Pawn shops, guys hanging out drinking beer in front of the store, they sold cigarettes by the singles...that kind of place. And the local pub does security checks before you are allowed in. That being said, everyone was super friendly and we did not feel at all threatened or like it was dangerous--but I wish someone had explained the neighborhood a bit so I thought I would describe it. If I was a woman alone, I would not walk around that area at night.

Also, you need a car to do anything. This part of PR is very much like LA, where everything is in strip malls and you need a car.

One final point--if you do go here, I recommend not taking RTE 3 or RTE 66--both are ugly, strip-mall laden patches of asphalt that have a ton of traffic and stoplights. An alternative route is 187 or 189 (I can't recall exactly) that takes you along the beach and through groves. It's quite lovely and we actually got to San Juan quicker using it. Others said it would take 10 minutes longer--either way, it's worth the detour. Just look on any map and it's the beach route. Generally well marked.

The Luquillo Sunrise surpassed our expectations, especially when compared to the other places we stayed at around Puerto Rico that were similarly priced. The motel-style hotel was clean, the public computer was brand new and updated, the breakfast included pancakes, bacon, breads and fruits plus drinks. The amazingly friendly and informative front desk help gave us a three-page written summary of where everything was in town, and the conference room had menus and commentary from years of previous guests that helped us choose restaurants and travel excursion companies. Unbelievably, they also lend guests beach chairs and beach towels so you don't have to bring your own!! There was secure parking for the car, which could be key in the area. They let you print boarding passes for free, too. This is not a sterile Sheraton but it was quite clean and nice, with a balcony facing the ocean in our third-floor room. We chatted with other guests at a long shared table during breakfast.

The B7B is located on a surf beach in Luquillo, one of the most beautiful beaches on the north side of PR. There's a surf shop a block away. Walking down the successive beaches you encounter a surf beach out front, then a reef (good to snorkel, they explained, but you must be a strong swimmer), then a semi-calm bay beach, then a very calm public beach with full facilities. On the day we were there it was clean and full of families. You are near enough to Fajardo that you can drive for 30 minutes to the area where all the kayak tours leave in the evening to tour the bioluminescent bay, which I would definitely recommend as an outing. The entry to El Yunque forest is quite close, also. You could easily be based in Luquillo and do El Yunque.

Within Luquillo is a famous strip of beachside kiosk restaurants that open both to a street and to the beach. We ate at a burger kiosk because our son was getting tired of mofungos and other local foods. The menus are semi-gourmet and highly varied among the kiosks. You could walk there from the B&B but you might want to drive. I understand that the whole area is very busy on weekends although it was quite quiet a lunchtime on a weekday.

My one complaint would be that the AC blew on my head while we slept. I suppose I could have turned it down. There's also a ceiling fan.

Highly recommended if you like small, well-located, friendly places.

Marsha (sp?), Gary, and Demian (sp?) were absolutely wonderful hosts - the accommodations of the Green Room were great. Relaxing, private, peaceful, comfortable, and clean. All staff were helpful and welcoming, the breakfast hostesses (especially Seli) were incredibly informative when we inquired about area restaurants, transport to scenic areas, rainforest, and beaches. Other guests were friendly but respected our space. Pricing was reasonable and worth every penny. Requests for any extra towels, etc. was immediately attended to. I would recommend the Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn without question to anyone visiting the area and when we return we will be requesting the Green Room again.
