Calabash House
Reviewed July 8, 2014

Calabash House has a wonderful charm that greets you as soon as you arrive. The colorful walls and hand-made mosaics in every room lend an eccentric energy. I have stayed in many types of accommodation in Treasure Beach (my favorite place in Jamaica) and this is easily one of my favorite places to stay now. Very reasonable prices. And a fantastic crew of caretakers/chefs who are extremely hospitable and have lovely personalities. Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: Room to the back gives you the lovely soundtrack of the waves on the sea all night...

Peaceful, safe, unspoilt. Superb accommodation. Perfect place for a very relaxing stay. We stayed for 3 nights, unfortunately, it was the week before the Calabash Festival which would have been great to experience. Would love to come back.

I booked Calabash House for a friend visiting from Ottawa and myself from the Treasure Beach website (treasurebeach.net); it looked inviting. On arrival we parked in front of a gift shop (a former garage) of mostly locally made crafts and paintings, some quite unusual and of good value. Then the FUNKINESS of the exterior hit us—mirror collages decorate the outside and inside of the villa, and they were designed by the owner-artist Elizabeth, who also organises artist workshops locally and abroad.
Once inside, we were made to feel totally at home, and that is how it was for the first visit in February 2014 and my recent two nights with different friends in May 2014. The four inside bedrooms and baths are very large, also decorated in mirror and clay craft designs conveying messages of peace, joy, relaxation. The kitchen was also large, where we could either fix our own meals and drinks or make use of Suzett’s culinary skills—her breakfasts were generous and tasty! The other staff (Michael and Yodi) are helpful and welcoming, but not intrusive.
Most of our time, however, was spent on the large back porch, used for lounging and meals, and down by the beach front which serves the villa. This is one of the nicest small beaches along the often rocky TB coast—clean and well maintained. A gazebo with hammocks adjoins the beach, in front of two single-room cute cabins which offer additional rental space. The treed and flowering grounds are beautifully kept by Michael.
I love Treasure Beach as a great getaway from Kingston life—and Calabash House will be my villa-of-choice when I can again get away. It is great value for money, and within walking distance of Jake’s and Jack Sprat for alternative eating/beach places. On both visits my Canadian and American friends were equally pleased and satisfied.

Best family trip and most reasonable rates for a beachfront property! We have gone twice and each time cannot wait to arrive and unplug! The spacious yard and the expansive beach give the kids plenty of room to play and adults space to relax.

Our stay at Calabash House was wonderful! It's a perfect place for anyone who is looking for something more authentic and friendly than your typical resort or beach hotel. The food is fantastic and my husband and I are still craving Suzette's ackee and salt fish! We thought we would do lots of touristing during our 1 week stay, but it was so just so lovely there that we ended up just hanging out on the beach until sunset every day. The drive there was pretty rough so make sure to get a good map, and watch for goats and donkeys in the road!

Yes, Calabash House was a paradise. Every breakfast and dinner Suzette and her assistant Yonie prepared wonderful meals for us-we shared with them our food choices. Our family had such a peaceful vacation at the Calabash House and we had plenty to do and plenty to eat. As my husband said" It was so nice to do nothing but walk out one door and see the beautiful water and walk out the other door and see the beautiful mountains!!. The people at Calabash House are such warm and kind souls and will do anything to make your vacation a "Joy"!!! Oh, don't want to forget Michael the groundkeeper-so kind!!! Great place to read books and play cards!!

My 3 friends and I have been back home from Calabash House for less than 24 hours and are already discussing when we can return! Although all of us had been to many different places in Jamaica, we agreed Treasure Beach is the only place we want to stay in Jamaica from now on-it is SO unspoiled, un-touristy, peaceful, and beautiful beyond belief.

For an artist like me staying at the unpretentious, artsy and laid-back Calabash House, with all its mosaics by creaive and friendly artist owner Elizabeth, was a dream come true. She even gave us a brief Mosaic Workshop:-) And its lovely swimming beach is practically private, yet not far from where the local fishermen launch their boats. Great for swimming, body surfing, beach combing, and enjoying some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. All of us are animal lovers and enjoyed making friends with the beach dogs and the lovely 70+ Miss June (who taught me to body surf!!!) and her puppies.

We rented the entire main house of 4 bedrooms (each with its own bath) and soon felt like family as Suzett and Uonie prepared "to die for" breakfast and dinner and served them on the verandah overlooking the beach and sea. Michael even served us fresh-from-the-tree coconuts! Although we also had some great meals at Jakes and Jack Sprats, we mainly wanted to relax and dine at our own private paradise on earth.

We had seen the YouTube video of Calabash House, but not even that fully prepared us for being in heaven on earth for a week:-)

Room Tip: All the rooms are great in their unique way, but the back one also has a door that opens directly on...
