Although the exterior of the hotel is awash in the neon lights of the billboard, the interior really maintains it's historic roots while offering a nice clean place to rest your head. The rooms are well kept, and the bed was quite comfortable. The gentleman at the front desk was extremely helpful in directing me to places of interest in Santiago, and it was convenient having a casino and disco connected to the hotel. Though I've read other reviewers complain about the noise, it was never really something I noticed (maybe it's 'cause I'm from NY). I had a room halfway down the hall on the second floor, and could not hear any sounds coming from the street.

The location was also a definite plus as the hotel was within walking distance of the monument, and surrounding bars/restaurants, and returning to the hotel after a day of exploring was quite easy as every taxista seemed to know the hotel. If staying at the hotel, also make sure to take a look at the photos in the 2nd floor lobby that show off the history of the hotel (interesting little gallery).

Pros: Friendly/helpful staff, clean rooms, and good location

Cons: My room did not include a safe and the selection at the complimentary breakfast was a bit limited

Would definitely stay again.

We have stayed at Hotel Matum several times in the past two years. We usually go to Santiago for shopping, medical appointments, or business and stay just for one night. This trip, however, we were to stay two nights.

Pros: Our room was very nice with two queen beds, spacious, nicely furnished with rustic Mission style furniture, a mini-bar, a complimentary bottle of water, A/C, ceiling fan, and cable TV. Updated and good size bathrooms. No wi-fi in rooms but readily available in the first floor and main floor lobby. Breakfast is included. There is an outdoor pool but we never had a chance to use it. Next door to a Casino. We paid a walk-in rate of RD$2,650 for our one-night stay or about $70.

Cons: despite requesting a quiet room (not facing the street), we were given a room next to the Casino entrance which seemed ok at the time of check-in. We were only able to stay one night because of the noise (loud music and people talking by the casino until dawn).

We will likely stay here again but only in a room in the back of the building (not facing the street or to the Casino) where we stayed in prior visits and never had a noise issue.

The rooms are very nice with air conditioning, cable TV, mini fridge and snacks and water. Also includes daily breakfast Hotel.is located next door to a casino with nightclub and both were fun and safe. The hotel also has free wifi. The hotel is the best value in Santiago. The only thing that was below par was the breakfast. Aside from that it was very nice and comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the restaurant in the front. Rear rooms have noise from the casino.

I stayed 3 nights at Matum hotel between Christmas and New Year.
Matum is and old historical hotel near Santiago's Monumento and very easy to reach coming from the Santo Domingo motorway or from downtown Santiago.
The hotel is under new management, so disregard reviews from a couple of years ago.
The rooms are nice and clean although a bit on the dark side. TV, A/C, good shower, safety box. The first room they offered me on the 2nd floor had some of the electricity broken down, they changed me to a room all the way down the hallway, which was very fortunate because it is the quietest part of the building. This could be a very nice hotel if it wasn't for all the car noise of Santiagueros coming to visit the casino and disco at night.
There is a private parking lot at the back of the hotel (right side) but on weekend nights it is overcrowded and also the front side and the avenue is used as parking lot. Make sure they give you a room away from the parking lot side of the building.
Breakfast is included in the price, there is a small breakfast buffet which was OK.

I thought the Hotel Matum was great. This was my first trip outside the USA and reading some the previous reviews made me think twice about staying here. I am glad I did stay here.
The Hotel Matum was kept very clean. I did not see a single bug while I was there. Not in my room, not in the lobby, not down by the pool.
Honest and trustworthy people, I left things sitting out in the room and nothing was touched. I even forgot and left my computer sitting in the second floor lobby once and it was fine.
I thought everyone on the staff was great. I thought for sure someone would give me a hard time about something but I did not hear a single person complain about anything. Everyone at least tried to help me out no matter what I asked.
I thought the pool was great, the food was good, the room was nice, and the people were really nice. I felt welcomed, comfortable, and the price was reasonable. What else could you want? I will be going back!
I would like to say thank you to everyone at the Hotel Matum.
