Hadn't done any prior research before stopping in Leyburn for lunch so it was pot luck.
We had a nicely presented toasted sandwich and panini.
Unfortunately we were both too full to sample the cakes which were just being delivered and looked delicious.

I've been coming on holiday to the area over the last 7 years. A friend who owns a holiday home nearby recommended Serendipity as the place to go for tea, coffee, cakes and light snacks and I have never been disappointed. The toasties with a twist have always been really well prepared and tasty. We paid our first visit in a couple of years this week and were pleased that it was business as usual. Love it.

The cafe is on the first floor of the shop, so access for the less mobile will be a little awkward.

Have eaten here many times over the last 5 years, always enjoyed it and always recommended it.
The last 2 visits have been somewhat disappointing and extremely disappointing. A very dry warmed up artificial tasting chocolate brownie was followed by probably the worst toasted teacake i've ever eaten, tiny, tasteless and rock hard. The teacake was accompanied with a pat of spreadable butter/ vegetable oil. When i asked if they had any proper butter a frosty tall blond lady said it was proper butter but eventually replaced it with a pot of Lurpack spreadable, equally as revolting as the first offering. I'm quite sure a tea room of this quality should and will know the difference between butter and a spread or i would certainly hope so. Come on Serendipity don't let the standard drop!

I've eaten here for years on holidays. Until this time I would have said it was 100% perfect. This time I had one excellent experience, and one that was the opposite. Having said that, as a gluten free diner, I am a difficult customer! They advertise as having gluten free options (and always used to serve oatcakes with a salad to achieve this). This year, that option had sadly been removed from the menu. No gluten free bread was available. But one of the staff there 'went the extra mile' and put herself out to find some oatcakes from elsewhere, and I was served the most delicious ham salad with the oatcakes. The plate looked so pretty and so nutritious. It was perfect. Unfortunately a day or so later, when I re-visited, a different person was in charge of the kitchen. The experience could not have been more different. I was told that there were no oatcakes, there was no gluten free bread, and all that was available was a baked potato or carrot or chocolate cake. On that occasion there was absolutely no effort to offer anything else, and the service, which has always been first class, didn't make up for my disappointment at all. I shall certainly go back, as it is the most beautiful shop, and the food and staff are normally absolutely excellent. It was just that on this one occasion, the experience wasn't of its usual high standard.

Been here a few times and always been pleased. Sadly not this occasion. Food was good as always. But my husband found a dead fly on the plate just as he finished his dessert. Received a half hearted apology when he went to pay the bill along with an insinuation that he must have put it there himself when he said he hoped he wasn't being charged for his dessert!!
Another place that we won't be revisiting. Very disappointed :-(
