The room was in a good location overlooking the square. Fairly clean but starting to look a bit tired. The food was really disappointing. We stayed on a Sunday night and we ordered a roast dinner on the night and I'm sure it was just the Sunday roast from earlier on warmed up. Especially when the food literally came out 5 mins after we ordered it. The staff were really helpful. Couldn't fault them.

Was going to spend the weekend in the North Yorkshire Moors and was looking for a place for two nights in the NE area without success, all was taken. I then ended up in Helmsley for the first night on the recommendation of a good friend and in this hotel totally at random. Le hasard fait bien les choses goes a saying in French and indeed this was a lucky solution. The place was full of cricketers having an annual outing, yet all functioned perfectly and kindly even for a solo traveller. A place to return to, a price decent with respect to the location in the middle of the town.

We had a lovely stay, we ate in the restaurant in the evening , food was very good service excellent.Fantastic breakfast, piping hot & freshly cooked, shame about the waiter , obviously not enjoying his job.We had very good value for money, will certainly be going back.

Room Tip: we chose a larger room. no.,22, very nice lovely big shower

I stayed here On the 31st of November well what a fantastic Hotel. Arrived a little late 8 o'clock at night but the staff Where very friendly from the start . Room 15 was a little small and did need updating also the bed was very hard. I decided to eat in the restaurant Where I picked gammon served with chunky chips washed down with a chilled pint or two. The public bar attached to the hotel was also full of Regulars Watching live football on two fantastic TVs ,once again washing down more pints. Breakfast in the morning ,well what can I say. Fantastic also I would like to thank the chef for warming the soup up for the the days shooting.
Hope to seeing you again

The setting of the hotel is wonderful in the lovely picturesque market town of Helmsley.

The hotel itself is very quaint and a rabbit warren as you would expect of a building so old. The staff were all very friendly, everywhere was clean and the breakfast was very good and plentiful.

As far as the room was concerned, I had number 15 which on first impressions was perfectly acceptable; that is until you get on the bed. The matress felt like it was 30+ years old, it was rock hard with every spring being felt through - sleep is impossible. I resorted to placing 2 pillows in the bed to lie on but then had to lie still or you got a spring in your back.

There is a shower over the bath, I managed to obtain luke warm water from the tap but on switching the lever to the shower function was presented with nothing more than a trickle: I therefore was given no alternative other than to have a wash in the sink.

I believe the hotel is in the process of refurbing the rooms so lets keep our fingers crossed that they change the beds and update the plumbing.
