Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

A massive and impressive history lesson, depicting Henry VIII's destruction of the monasteries. Today, the place is one of the most awesome ways to experience the religious life of the distant past. It's a beautiful spot, maybe even more beautiful in ruins rather than as it was in its heyday. The past is never past.

Breathtakingly beautiful ruins. Could spend hours wandering around here and taking oodles of photos. Kids loved it exploring through all the nooks.
Museum on site explains about how the abbey ended up in its current state.
Owned by english hertitage so if member is free.

One of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful setting and fantastic in any weather. We had a sunny day and the ruins were bright and lovely. Well worth the tricky drive.

Fantastic ruins with a very interesting audio tour if you are a Barclays premier rewards customer you get free access to this site. Site is very well maintained and the before and after photos shows how much work was done to allow visitors to see these marvellous ruins. The site has very clean toilets and an onsite cafe. Some parts of the site are not suitable if you have trouble climbing

For a lovely time visit this abbey. Set in a lovely North York Moors National Park setting with rolling green hills and dots of white sheep, this Abbey steps you back in time more than nine hundred years to discover and feel the spirits of the past.
